I like this! I've been having similar thoughts. In particular, if Arthur didn't show up during the first half of the 20th century, I'm not sure I want to know what's still to come! I hesitate to mention my own fic in a review, but as we seem to be thinking along the same lines, I think you might be interested. I had thought about mentioning the world wars in it but I didn't want to get too specific about the timeframe. I did talk about the Saxons and the Normans, though, with particular emphasis on Arthur's (very real, in our world) impact on history. If you're interested, it's a short piece called "A Letter from the Cave".

I've been consoling myself with the idea that Merlin spends a lot of time "asleep" in the cave, rather than living through every single day.
