I don't care if it is corny or predictable. It is ADORABLE!

TheNotoriousNovelist chapter 1 . 1/27/2014
I always thought Toph could learn to read and write by drawing in the dirt! If someone face-planted in clay or something to leave an impression, would Toph know what they look like? I've always wondered this.
I love this cute one-shot!

Gotta love Toph! :)

[It required Toph to be a little less like Toph, to curb her Toph-ness.] This is interesting, because in the last fic I read about Toph becoming a mother she seemed determined not to change for her child.

[If there were a cure for her blindness, surely they would have found it.] If I recall, Toph's parents were nobles. I wouldn't be surprised if they threw money at every opportunity to cure her blindness. I wonder how Toph would have felt about that... I mean, she always seemed to have a lot of pride and used her blindness as a strength rather than a weakness.

[But she needed to see Lin, and everything connected to her, including her drawings.] Awww.

[Toph knew she was, not only because her friends insisted that she was, but because her heartbeat was beautiful.] This is sweet. However, blind people can learn to recognize faces by using their hands. Has Toph ever felt Lin's face with her hands?

[Then there was the sound of her laugh, like smooth pebbles clinking against one another, or stones skipping across water.] Beautiful.

["Since I can't see your paper drawings, do you think you could draw me a picture in the dirt?" She held out her hand for her daughter, waiting.] I was wondering how they would solve this dilemma. I must admit, this took me completely by surprise. Yet it's so simple I don't know why I didn't think of it. XD

[Toph was beautiful because she was strong.] This is the only part of the story that really felt off to me. It's a great sentiment, but not something I imagine Toph would ever think or say. Otherwise, great work!

Oh, this was far from corny, and let me just say you're a girl after my own heart because I adore Toph (she's my favorite ATLA character), and I do hope we get to see more of her adult background in the new season of Korra because I really would love to know who Lin's father was. But perhaps that's up for speculation.

Anyway, though, this was just an adorable story, and I really love that you were able to see Lin as a cute, adorable, loving child since the adult Chief Beifong seems far from that little, innocent girl, though we did start to see glimpses towards the end. I really love how, just like any normal child, she wanted to show her mother her artistic creations, and it must be difficult for a small child to understand and realize her mother can't see them because of her disability. And I have to say I really love how you captured the reason Toph wished she could see after having Lin. No, we all know she didn't care about that stuff when she was younger, and I love how you show some of that in this. But it makes perfect sense that once she had a child, she'd want to see.

I adored how you showed the first steps flashback. That was so cute and lovely, and I can't imagine what it would be like not to be able to see that, so I think it's awesome you were able to capture that and make it believable.

And I love that the flashback gave her an idea. And what a smart idea it was, too! I love what the drawing depicted and the message in this. It was really lovely, and I am so glad you did something with mother and daughter. I think it's fabulous, which is why I'm giving it a well-deserved favorite. Well done. :)

I like that Toph has to curb who she is because it takes patience to be a mother. It’s weird to think of Lin as a kid but I really enjoy it. It’s sweet. It’s also sad that she wants so bad for her mother to see her picture, but she can’t. I love how you talk about Toph being fine with being blind until Lin came into her life. That was really touching. I do love how she sees beyond though and the way you go into the way Toph looks at Lin. I kind of thought that’s how Toph would see the picture but I was still excited none the less. I like how Lin sees her mother. I think it’s the way Toph really is.

The only part I thought was a little slow was in some of your descriptions about Toph’s life. For instance the telling of what Toph told Katara. I felt it could have been tightened up a bit to help with flow.

However, I really enjoyed this. I thought it was sweet and definitely put a smile on my face. I thought you did a really good job.
