My head canon: Yggdrasil, the World Tree, is in reality an energy network that connects realms together. The Bifrost travels most easily to realms within the network and Heimdall is able to see all the Nine Realms, but not beyond them, because his gift uses Yggdrasil's energy to work.

The Chitauri are from a realm outside Yggdrasil. They wanted to use Loki instead of kill him when he fell, because it became apparent that his talent allowed him to travel the pathways not just within Yggdrasil, but also find the very few pathways between Yggdrasil and other World Trees (because why shouldn't there be a whole Forest of Trees? And where their branches overlap, Loki can cross between them).

True old mythology fact: one of Loki's names was Skywalker or Sky Treader.
