Harry/Collins would mess havoc with 'standard' structured lessons.
A) they didn't work out that great for him - three, no four of his D.A. teachers intended to kill him or otherwise maim him before the end of the school year. (Remus never wanted to hurt anybody).
B) Umbridge - he's doing the exact opposite of the obsessed pink toad ... except for teaching OWL lessons. For collins, LIFE-LESSONS are much more important than grades.

I see he's still telling the truth while revealing nothing - truth: his very-first-class DID break into the restricted section, BUT he was right there alongside them, ergo "not any rules I didn't break". (In this case, he can't use his true history or the adventures he and his friends got into in May/June either - it would be fun, but somebody needs to be on the lookout and keep everyone "safe".)

Alternate universe - it's very likely that there MIGHT be either a block or a counter-curse to the Cruciatus (or the other 'unblockable' ones) curse. Either that, or just believing you can't stop it makes it true in a self-fulfilling prophecy, whereas, someone who thinks it can be stopped short-of-it-starget WILL find a solid shield/block or cure. (Maybe).

I do like a good 'Potter-as-professor' teacher.
AND you made it make sense ... fits in perfectly both with JKRowling's books (HP taught the 'Dumbledore's Army', like you said), and tied in with your very large (sadly abandoned Adrift in a World novel-lenght) story.

Potter using Slytherin cunning to both educate students - (the Ministry in this A.U. version is very much hands-off on actual experience) - and find books/research materials he didn't have access to during the summer while he was trying to compare the history of this world against his own.
