Maid Cafe: Chapter Six: Childish Lifeform

Sonic sat silently and awkwardly on Shadow's bed. It was actually pretty comfortable for who Shadow was. However, the room did not meet Sonic's tastes. The walls were painted a deep red almost black color. All the furniture was black and there was the occasional splash of white or red.

Sadly, Sonic would've enjoyed touring the large empty house if it wasn't for the heavy weight on his legs. The blue hedgehog sighed and glanced down at the now sleeping Shadow. He slept silently besides his breathing.

Sonic moved his hand behind the other's ear, lightly scratching behind it. "Geez Shadow. What are you doing? Getting drunk and all. Loser."

His only reply was light breathing and a slight shift in arm positions.

Sonic slowly began to lift Shadow's head off his lap, gently moving the other and slipping out carefully. He froze when Shadow grabbed him, his grip surprisingly tight.

"Shads... c'mon. Let me go..." Sonic gently shook Shadow, trying to get the other to let go. "Move it."

Shadow rolled over, curling into a ball and letting go of Sonic's hand. The blue hedgehog grinned and leaned over the other to take the headband off his head.

"You're such a baby Shads."

Shadow's eye lids fluttered open as Sonic left the room. Rubies watched as the blue hero disappeared behind a door.

"Sonic..." He didn't get to finish his sentence as his brain shut down and he flew back into his dream world.

The next day, Shadow woke up with a horrible headache. He came out of his room cussing and swearing to kill Mephiles and Silver the next time he saw either of them.

As he went to the kitchen to search for a box of painkillers, he found Sonic lying on his couch, drooling on one of the pillows. He dismissed it and continued his trek to the kitchen for something to help soothe the pain and to make himself something to eat.

The smell of bacon slowly started to drift into the living room, waking Sonic up from his slumber.

"Shadow?" He glanced around. "Shadow?"

Shuffling came from the kitchen and then the sound of glass breaking on the ground followed by a string of curse words. Sonic repeated the other's name and asking if he was okay before getting up to see what had been broken.

A photo frame was on the ground, the glass shattered in pieces. Shadow gently picked up the pieces, thankful that he had his gloves on. The old picture that had been incased in the frame had flown a few feet away from the disaster area. A gloved hand reached over to pick it up but the picture was swiped away by Sonic.

"Is this Maria and..." He paused trying to remember. "Gerald Robotnik?"

Sonic earns a grunt in return. A small chuckle comes from him and Shadow looks up with a questioning look on his face.

"You really love them don't you?"

Shadow muttered a quiet, "Shut up," and left the room, storming into the closest bathroom. Sonic shook his head as he watched the other go, think that he, the blue blur, was an idiot for making Shadow run away from him again. It was becoming a horrible habit.

He stood up and walked quietly over to the bathroom and gently pressed the side of face against the door. He heard sobbing. Quiet sobbing yes, but it was clear that someone, Shadow, was crying. Sonic knew he had probably triggered a bad memory, specifically one with Maria and Gerald Robotnik. And he was sorry.

He tapped the door with the back of his hand. "Shadow?" He said softly. "Are you okay?" There was only more sobbing so Sonic decided to push the door open. Too bad for Shadow, he had forgotten to lock the door like he always did.

Sonic found Shadow in the corner of the bathtub in an idiotic attempt to hide in the small room. He sat down on the edge of the tub and tried to make the black hedgehog feel better.

"Shadow?" The rubies looked up at him. Gloved hands rapidly tried to wipe away the tears, the trails leaving marks on Shadow's muzzle.

The blue blur slipped in the tub, landing in front of the other. His arms wrapped around the ultimate lifeform, who suddenly seemed so fragile. Like a porcelain doll.

"Shh... it's alright." He said. "Their watching over you."

Sonic pushed the black hedgehog back so that he could look into Shadow's bloodshot eyes. His finger wiped away a now forming tear and he murmured reassuring words.

"Maria wouldn't want you to cry Shadow." And the lifeform bit his bottom lip. "She wants you to be happy."

Sonic caught the other hedgehog as he practically collapsed in his arms letting decades of tears flow out after holding them in for so long. Sonic gently rubbed his hand Shadow's back, trying to be as comforting as he could.

"I-I don't want to lose someone again," Shadow said in between sobs. "Everyone... everyone I love suffers!"

The blue hedgehog could only try to reassure Shadow that he wouldn't be going down so easily. That he would be with him for eternity. He knew that Shadow wouldn't believe those words but they seemed fitting and definitely made him feel better. They made Sonic feel that he would play an important part in Shadow's life.

"Thank you. Thank you so much."

Sonic gave a small nod and hugged the doll in his hands tighter.

"Be happy Shadow. Be happy."

There. Be happy I finally posted this. Be happy like Sonic said.
