And this was it.

It was when his head was spinning, his anxiety bubbling through a consistently stoic face. It was when Sasuke Uchiha had finally reached his goal. With limbs of burnt flesh and dark tainted lungs, Sasuke could hardly contain his overbearing excitement from taking form. He was idle on the inside of a dark room, with no light but the scarlet red luminance of the fiery embers which rose from behind.

There, inside of this inclosing, sat an angel. His figure was lean and bent, a silhouette of opulent hair fell slightly more limp than usual. Oh, there was so much he had to say. There was even more that he had to do. And he almost did, had not for this blood shaded glow, then Sasuke's observant eyes would have missed the pale kisses across two, usually dusted, cheeks. He would have missed the lack of azure that would once fill the angel's eyes; now the color painted the boy's lips. Had not for the scarlet filter that warped the toxic chamber, Sasuke would not have recognized the signs that he has seen far too vividly once before.

Immediately Sasuke's steady hands began to quake, a threat picking up his spine. His mind made every effort to piece together some sort of logical answer, something that could give him at least the bit of understanding needed to formulate a way around the inevitable. His composure was climbing a mountain of pure ice.

"Sasuke…"

And that voice, depleting quickly, was the wrong step up the treacherous incline.

And he came down,

Slipping into a state of disaster. A projectile vomit of his inner mind.

In an instant he was next to Naruto, his fingers quick to secure themselves around each shoulder.

"Naruto, get up." He choked. Black eyes were trained so full-heartedly into the half lidded pools of faded denim. If only those eyes were as focused as his own…

Of course there would be no movement or following of direction.

Sasuke had to get his point across somehow. He was always a violent person, and by nature it would only seem right if Sasuke where to slam Naruto's shoulders back into the wall behind him.

"Answer me, you fucking idiot!" He said before hearing the dull thump as Naruto's head rolled, his chin meeting against his chest.

Of course there would be no answer.

Sasuke bit back a wince as he felt his own neck ache; a sympathy pain, which didn't quite add up, for the dead do not feel pain, meaning there was no need for the pinching hurt to wrap around the Uchiha's skin.

Of course Sasuke already knew this; all of this.

"Well moron," He said, pretending to hear a flippant response that he knew would never come, "looks like I have to save you, once again," Sasuke stood up, his sight now turning to the roaring embers before them, "from your own..." his mind momentarily wavered, teeth clenching as the base of his nose scrunched up ever so slightly- "stupidity." -in disgust.

Outside, in one of the small many tents set for the students and faculty, Kakashi slowly brought a finger to his lips. A quizzical look possessed the man's features as the digit swiped along his tongue. Quickly, the finger flicked down, brushing a page of his small yellow book over the other. He was a display of equanimity for an onlooking person, though in reality, Kakashi's seemingly engaged eyes never met the words of his favorite novel, instead he was staring straight through the text and into his brain's created visual of horror.

"Kakashi?" Small dark eyes darted up, slightly started as he was taken out of his created world of burning boys…

"Of course," Iruka said through a weak smile, "Only when surrounded by dangerous fumes does Kakashi Hatake choose against wearing his mask." Iruka wasn't an onlooking person. He was someone of importance.

Kakashi felt the chuckle leave his throat as he wrapped an arm around the man's waist. Iruka was what one would call, 'a shimmering sunbeam' or a 'spark of radiance' right now Kakashi called him sanity.

Sighing deeply Iruka leaned into his lover's touch, placing the book onto a nearby plastic table, then taking Kakashi's fingers in his own.

He turned to face him eyelids partially dropping while sharing the other's breathing air, "Are you okay?" he whispered in a voice that hinted at the question not truly being a question.

A burn set in Kakashi's throat as he dropped his face into the deep slope of Iruka's neck, his mind immediately finding peace as he breathed in the other's familiar sent. Kakashi did not need to use words, for no words were needed for a question that wasn't really a question. No words, because Iruka was in the place of heart where the man could feel Kakashi's inner turmoil. Ten loving fingers rolled down Kakashi's spine, an immediate warmth circulating through his body as every one of those bones soothed him.

It was things like these that made Kakashi decide the things he did. If not for this source of light in the man's life… there would be no meaning at all.

"I love you,"

"I love you too."

Had the roles been reversed, Kakashi had no doubt he too would have been making every effort to get to this man. No matter the temperature of the scene.

For he was his sanity after all, and life would be worthless without him.

"You know you can open your eyes, kit."

Naruto felt a rush run across his skin as two oceanic orbs shot open.

It wasn't flames the boy woke up to, nor fluffy clouds and children with dove wings. It wasn't actually anything at all.

Nothing but a blank white. Not blinding, or bright, but not dull either. It was everywhere wrapping around his entirety in a complete numbing sensation.

"There's not really much to take in now, is there?"

A woman, Naruto had never seen before, now appeared. Her face was looking down at mere two inches from his own. Quickly she pulled away, turning her back to the blonde.

Naruto could feel the confusion twist his features as he slowly sat up. "What-"

"That isn't safe you know." The woman said quickly, her head peeking from behind her, anything but, broad shoulder, "There is no real bottom here, so you never know when thing are going to drop."

As if on cue, Naruto felt his body fall farther into the depths of white. He slammed his lids shut, bracing for an impact that would never come. Naruto blinked open his eyes as the stranger's playful tone met his ears.

"Told yah," Naruto was now facing the woman, their hands interlocked as she held his seemingly weightless body in the air.

She placed him down, his feet now finding ground next to hers.

"That was sort of my fault," She laughed while turning yet again, "when you start thinking about it-" Naruto suppressed a gasp as she again appeared before his eyes, he had not seen her move... it was as if she teleported to the spot, "-things get a little crazy!" As if to further prove the point, the woman now shouted from a spot a mile away from her previous position, without even moving an inch.

"What are you thinking, kit?" The blonde nearly jumped as he felt a tap against his shoulder. The woman was back to where she stood before things got… crazy.

She smirked as she took of Naruto's hand, pulling him on her own path. The woman rolled her eyes as she could practically feel the other's weary steps.

"You're going to fall again if you keep thinking, kit." She grinned as Naruto let out a startled choke. Oh, how she loved the newbies.

They wandered for a few minutes before Naruto had found it in him to move his lips.

"Excuse me," He said quietly, his words not slowing her pace across the endless white, "who are you?"

The woman let out an airy laugh before she stopped abruptly, turning to face the other.

"I was wondering when you would start asking! Normally, the first question is, 'Where the hell am I?'"

"Ah yes," Naruto said quietly as he looked down at his twiddling thumbs, "that too…"

"Well fear not, spirit!" She shouted, throwing her hands in the air dramatically, "All your questions will soon be answered."

"I," she began, pointing to her youthful cheeks, "am Haruna Umoi. A lovely thirty year old woman who owns a flower shop!" With an animated twirl she curtsied at Naruto, who couldn't help but nod, slightly embarrassed, by her performance.

"Well, that's who I am right now… I could also be Izuko Takano," Instantly her figure shifted, and now stood a tall bony man with his hands on his hips, "or wait I have a better one, just for you!" The man yelled as he again warped into another man, this one Naruto knew well.

"Kakashi Hatake," he said, as he stroked his clothed chin in a astute manner. Whatever it was that embodied the teacher did not suppress it's mischievous intent from glittering through the visible eye. "but what about…"

Naruto felt his chest pang as he stood facing none other than Sasuke Uchiha. He was flawless, the exact replica; an impassive expression was worn across chiseled features, both strong and handsome, yet as quickly as the teenager had come, he left. In his place sat a large chestnut fox, staring up with wise clear eyes.

"Even the Grim Reaper isn't that mean, kit." The fox spoke through an unmoving mouth, there was a moments pause as the fox watched the sad fog swim through its passenger's eyes.

"You always did like foxes, didn't you?"

Naruto swallowed hard, nodding his head quickly for confirmation.

"Good, then I think this is 'who I am' for the moment." The fox gave a whisked glance before turning a heel.

"You coming?" The animal asked, already a few steps ahead. Naruto, snapping out of his haze, blinked before moving to follow the creature's lead.

The pair walked an innumerable amount of steps before either spoke again.

"So," Naruto breathed, "heaven or hell?"

Both beings smiled at the question.

"Neither actually," The fox said, not bothering to turn it's head in the other's direction, "I actually have no idea where I am leading us."

"Oh."

Both walked a while longer, having no problem in delaying whatever destiny would fall before them.

"A grim reaper, huh?" Naruto clicked his tongue inside his mouth.

The fox sniggered, clearly amused by the others bluntness, "It's not as bad as it seems."

Naruto had experienced a lot of death in his life. The thought of what happened 'after' crossed his mind countless of times. He concluded, those who are left behind have it worse."You must never be lonely."

The fox blinked. It was a weird thing to say, even for a human. Then again this one was a little strange from the start.

"I actually don't get many visitors. Souls do a pretty good job reaching the other side on their own." It said, four pawed feet never slowing.

"This isn't exactly a normal stage in life. This place is neither heaven nor hell, and usually when I find a spirit stranded in this place, its my duty to lead them to their destination. It's only happened a handful of times."

At this point, nothing could further confuse nor startle the blonde, and in fear of thinking, he let the questions leave his lips absent-mindedly. "So how would one get here then?"

Now the fox was laughing.

"This place, my home, is called 'The Wrong Turn Between the Split'."

Naruto went over the name twice with his lips, "You mean… a wrong turn… from the gateway to afterlife?"

"Eh," The Grim Reaper snorted, "Sure, whatever your kind calls it; the light at the end of the tunnel, the stairway to heaven, the golden path, I've heard them all …it's same thing really."

Naruto paused for a near second before a sharp chortle shook his ribs. "That is just so typical," he laughed, and laughed again, each emotion painting his body to an extreme. His feet stopped moving as he bent down and held his ribs. He didn't understand why it hurt so much. There was pain from every booming interjection, but not enough apparently, to stop the demonic hilarity.

"Leave it to Naruto Uzumaki," He yelled over the stabbing sensations that would not stop plummeting into his skin, "to even screw up dying!"

The white world was being ripped away,

"Stop,"

loud shredding sounds echoed through the once peaceful place, as if the whole place was being taken apart at the seams.

"Kit, wait,"

The once nullifying white now blackened and blued, liked bloody bruises left against night's innocent skin.

"Kit…"

The sick laughter never deceased, and instead amplified. Soon, Naruto recognized the giddy voices as not being just his own. Frantically he contorted, his neck snapping back as he moved much too fast for his own body. Who was it? Who was laughing at him? He wanted to ask this. He did not want, for the first time, to laugh along with them, for he knew now knew the true intent of their games. He couldn't say these things however, for his own loud cachinnation took up the vicinity of his voice entirely.

Naruto slammed both hands against his ears in as the sky began to spin and as it did so, the sloshing of Naruto's own stomach-acid began to dissolve, a wave of nausea leached Naruto's senses and nothing but metallic poison lived in his lips; and yet they all still laughed.

The vomit rose through every vein, swimming to his mouth, nose and eyes. Naruto's howling built up between the disturbed abdominal lining, stretching the damaged flesh like an over-filled balloon. His disoriented insides which had now filled every joint and gap, drowned Naruto's brain. He could feel it die as the spew bit away at his mind. Bile dripped from the tip of his nose, sloshing onto the ground, mixing with a chunky pile of his own yolk.

Jolting eyes bugged out as he felt a clawed set of fingers tighten around his wrist, yanking the hand away from his ear. His laughter fell more to a wicked scream as he stood in confrontation with a creature of sickening appearance. He recognized the person immediately, even with his gray skin, grease drenched hair, black open eye sockets and artificially tightened smile; Kiba Inuzuka.

Immediately Naruto swung his hand away, wrapping his face around to see a never ending crowed of familiar faces that once use to bane his past existence. The ghost like creatures surrounded him, all of which harbored laughter between their lips which were tied apart with red stitching, forcing their mouths to form inhuman grins.

Naruto slowly began backing away, his face paper white.

What the fuck are you doing? Immediately Naruto spun around, coming face to face with another laughing crowd of people he once knew. Gasping he turned a full loop realizing he was completely trapped.

And still he laughed. They all laughed.

You worthless piece of shit.

He recognized the tone for it was created by one no other human could posses.

Just do us all a favor, kill yourself… theres so many ways, even with that melted brain of yours, you should be able to figure out something.

Neji Hyuga's bitter breath beat bullets against the rim of Naruto's left ear.

If you had one good bone in your body you would know the disgrace you existence causes.

He could feel the organ rot.

I know you try to be a strong person, Neji chanted, as large cuts began etching themselves down Naruto's chest,

H

but it's a fact

A

that no matter how good you may become we will still hate you,

T

because you are a source revolting bile,

E

and bile is always hated.

The word bled down his body and rang on repeat. His ears began spitting vomit, his pores leaking a mix of bodily fluids and grey toxins.

You will die alone. You will die despised.

Naruto's quivering irises watched as HATE split open his stomach, his previous laugh now a dying gurgle, for it was impossible to laugh, with your two lungs lying limp at each foot. His belly burst in reds, greens, and yellows, smearing the ground with his torment. He screamed in agony as pin tip pupils fell down to his bare vertebrae, the completely visible bone connecting a ripped open chest to waist.

You're just pathetic scum who fails, and fails.

The only liquid Naruto had familiarized with were the tears that leaked from his eye, lips, ears and nose. Let this end.

Through his blurred lends, could Naruto faintly make out a silhouette that stood different from the rest.

The body of the only true human.

The one without the missing eyes.

The one without the grey skin and moist hair.

The one without the laced smile.

The one that was Sasuke Uchiha.

The brunette was standing just in front of the crowed of corpse. He wasn't laughing with the rest of them, instead he wore a doleful expression, eyes focused on Naruto, mouth moving in words Naruto could not hear over his guttural noises and the others cackling.

If only he could focus he thought,

Die dammit, die!

Focus on the one thing that really mattered. Naruto reached a hand out, praying that just maybe...

You do not deserve him.

Sasuke did the same, he grabbed his hand and held it as a precious warmth ran through Naruto's veins, replacing all bile with sunlight.

Neji was gone.

There was no more hurtful words or horrid laughter.

Naruto did not need to remove his gaze from that of caring brown to know he was back in a world of white.

"Kit…" Sasuke said, carefully removing his fingers from their held position, "I told you not to think."

Naruto felt his lower lip quiver, a sad tremor flickering in his bones as this Sasuke called him something the true Sasuke would never. "I know. I'm sorry."

This Sasuke gave the blonde a sad smile before taking a deep breath.

"No!" Naruto stammered, his eyes darted to the left, unwilling to meet the other's surprised glance, "Don't-…don't change."

The reaper watched the nervous blonde for a short moment before a snicker left his mouth. Naruto had only seen the real Sasuke do this a few times, and seeing it again, gave him butterflies.

"You know," Sasuke said, again back to the same old motion of wandering down an invisible path, "That was the hardest I have ever had to work to get a soul out of suspension."

Naruto said nothing as he idly felt his fingers rub circles across his stomach for assurance of its presents.

"The person before you simply needed to be coaxed by his lovely wife Haruna before he could reach heaven. You on the other hand, forced me to venture into your own creation," Sasuke said in a calm voice, Naruto nodded thinking back to the woman whom he first saw when reaching the white world.

"You have a very strong monster in you, Kit."

Naruto traced his index across his chest, Outlining a word that fed his dear 'monster'.

"And, I may not have a specific place I am taking you, but I have been waiting for something in particular to come to us."

Sasuke turned around, catching Naruto watching his hands as if they were foreign objects against his skin.

"I think we're here, Kit." Naruto's eyes peered up, colliding with a beautiful dark he wished he could see every morning. The real dark.

Sasuke grabbed the blonde's hand, pulling him closer.

It is amazing what a Grim Reaper can do, the warmth of it's body nearly a replica of the one worn by Sasuke Uchiha himself. It would suffice, if only the slight emptiness did not linger like a bitter aftertaste.

"Look,"

Naruto followed the instructions, his gaze rolling before them.

There was nothing at first. Nothing but the numb white that had been in plentiful view from the start, but after waiting for what seemed an innumerable amount of moments, a blip, so far away it appeared no bigger than a dime, walked in their direction.

Naruto blinked.

And blinked again.

The closer the figure was, the more the blonde seemed to distrust his eyes.

"Is that-"

"Yes."

Naruto felt his heart drop in blissful astonishment.

"Go to him, Kit. He's been looking for you."

Naruto turned to face the reaper, his eyes still wide and mouth unmoving. He snapped his chin down to nod, before taking his first step. It was these first steps, that were the hardest, still in pure disbelief. Only when Naruto could make out the familiar, and brilliant, smile did his legs take off. Never had he run so fast.

"Gramps!"

The man's grin only grew as Naruto jumped against him, knocking the man over completely.

Naruto shot up, his hands immediately codling Jiraya's head as he had many times before. "Shit, Grampa! I am so sorry are you-"

The nurturing question was cut off as cheery laughter sang through the air. A smile so wide appeared on Naruto Uzumaki's face it seemed his cheeks might swell. These two things weren't the same in this world. These things where human. These things were loving.

"Foolish kid, you don't need to worry about anything. I am, and forever will be, in perfect condi-" Another line was broken, but this time by other actions instead of words.

Jiraya's eyes lowered, the warm smile never leaving his face as he ran a hand through Naruto's bright locks. The blonde was jammed against Jiraya's chest, his arm tightly fastened around his torso.

"Aw, don't worry brat. Whatever it is that's troubling you will work out." The man soothed hearing a muffled whimper escape the other's mouth. "Hey, no crying, alright?"

Naruto removed his head from the man's chest, looking up through watery eyes, "Sorry about that," He smiled, using one hand to rub the shine from his vision, "I missed yah, you know?"

"I missed you too, kiddo." Jiraya hummed, ruffling the blonde head like he always had.

"There's so much I want to tell you…"

"And you will," The white haired man chimed, rubbing his grandson's shoulders, "once you don't have a little Uchiha punk determined to tie you down."

"Gramps…"

"I'm serious! You should hear the stuff that kid thinks! You call me a pervert…"

"Yuck! Don't say shit like that you old fart, you don't even know the bastard!" Naruto yelled, a wide smile on his face as he playfully punched the man.

Jiraya laughed his warm loving laugh, the one that rung Naruto's daydreams and supplied him with the ability to get through the day.

"As much as I would like for you to stay and fill my peaceful days with your whining, I think its time for you to go back to the place you truly belong."

"I'm gonna have to second that." The voice of the grim reaper sounded, his shape formed that of the fox.

"Ah well if it isn't my old friend," Jiraya grinned at the animal, whom simply rolled his eyes at the man.

"Well Kit," the Grimm Reaper said, his tone nearly wavering on sternness, "I'm going to guide you back now. I assure you that next time you're faced 'your gateway to the afterlife,'"

Jiraya snorted at this before the fox continued, "this route will not be an option."

Naruto nodded before he was scooped up by his grandfather for a final parting embrace, "I'll do my best." He grinned cheekily.

"You had better take him back now, the punk is freaking out down there."

"He certainly is an emotional little Uchiha, isn't he?" The fox responded while the group began again there trek forward.

Naruto watched wordlessly as with every step, both the fox and his grandfather exchanging coy statements, the empty white began jolting.

"I'll tell your parents you're doing fine," Although the white was now clearing his vision, Naruto could recognize the voice of his grandfather and responded with gratitude.

His head felt light and his body seemed to be dropping.

"Oh, and don't let that little punk take you without a fight!"

It wasn't peaceful, but instead electrifying.

"Shut up you nasty pervert!"

He was going to miss that creep.

Within a moment Naruto was gone, leaving both man and animal alone in The Wrong Turn Between the Split. The two stood silently, basking in the white silence.

"Well," The fox said, relinquishing the bright presents from his dimension, "he certainly is your grandson."

Jiraya grunted, a proud smile never wavering, "He certainly is."

"Remember when I winded up here?" The man said, showing is quirked smile to the other,

"How could I forget the man who begged me to take the form of a large chested woman?"

Both let out a memorable laughter, thinking back to time a mere year ago.

"Well my foxy friend," Jiraya began, "I think its high time I return as well."

"Would you like a companion for the road?"

"Indeed I would,"

The two took their time, feeling each step after the next, for there time was endless.

"But I refuse the companionship of anything but attractive woman in mini-skirts,"

"Yes well, it seems I need to get a bit more picky on who I let into heaven."

"Oh well! A bad girl with horns is always a nice change!"

"You truly are a sick angel."

"And you truly have been the most boring companion."
