Chapter 50: True to yourself

Staring at Melissa's eyes was something really strange for Aria. Even if they were separated by a glass. Melissa looked good. She always did. Maybe it was a Hastings thing. Now, when she was in the prison, she looked just as good as before. Her smile was the same. Her white, shiny teeth and her big eyes. Aria couldn't believe how easily they all had fallen into her game. But they did. Now she coughed a bit and shifted on her place, but she didn't answer Melissa.

"So, Mrs. Fitz?" Melissa repeated. "You wanted to talk to me?"

"No," Aria coughed again. "Actually, you are the one, who wanted to talk to me. Why?"

"I wanted to see how are you feeling," Melissa shrugged.

"I'm doing just fine," Aria even managed to smile. "So..."

"Oh, I bet!" Melissa smiled once again. "You are married to the love of your life and your life couldn't be better!"

"Why are you doing this?" Aria leaned forward. "Just tell me why."

"Why am I doing... what?" Melissa tilted her head. "You wanted something from me."

"Excuse me?" Aria blinked.

"Yeah," Melissa sighed. "You wanted the truth, all of you! I just... gave it to you."

"The truth about what?" Aria still looked confused. "Melissa... we've had a perfect life! Why..?"

"Why what?"

"Why you had to ruin all this? Why you wanted to hurt your own sister!?"

"I was protecting my sister, Aria."

"How?" Aria shook her head. "When you were..."

"You are not asking the right questions, Aria!" Melissa interrupted her. "You never asked the right questions. You just needed a little push to find the truth. See, you needed someone like "A", and this is why I gave it to you. Even my sister! She was living in her own perfect world and she thought that nothing could ruin it. She was trying to follow our father's dreams. She didn't have dreams of her own. This is why I had to do something to wake her up!" Melissa tilted her head. "Hanna was focused in her own perfect life of being the next big thing. She didn't realize how shallow she was. She didn't know anything about the rest of the world. I woke her up! Then... Emily," Melissa laughed. "The perfect little Emily, who was in love with Alison and didn't even realizing it. Or maybe she was, but she didn't have the courage to admit that in front of herself. And then... you!" Spencer's sister leaned forward. "You know, I was trying to look for any flaw on your part, Aria. I tried and I tried... but you were too grounded. You've had your perfect family and no problems. See, I had to dig deeper with you. This is when it got interesting. Except your interesting choice of fashion, I couldn't find anything. Then... I found Ezra!" Melissa chuckled. "I think you've always searched for someone like him, but you couldn't find him. He looked like your soulmate and it turned out that he was. I've tried to separate you, ever since the moment I found out about you two. It was wrong! And I had to do something to fix that mistake. I was happy that I finally found that mistake. You looked too perfect! But, he was too stubborn to keep that relationship alive." Melissa sighed. "I've studied him. I dig into his past and I couldn't find someone like you there. See, you were different. There was something in you that made him feel so in love. I put you two through everything possible, to make you see how wrong that situation was. It didn't matter though, because every time you were able to see how much you love each other."

"Why?" Aria whispered. "Who gave you the right to do that?"

"Who?" Melissa chuckled again. "The life? Somebody had to give you a lesson and wake you up from your perfect lives."

"And that someone was you?"

"Yes," Melissa nodded. "And it was fun. Well, it was fun except you and Ezra."

"I thought you care," Aria frowned.

"Oh, I do!" Melissa nodded. "This is why I had to do it!"

"What?!"

"Someone had to do it!" Melissa shrugged.

Aria good off her seat abruptly. "I don't have to listen to this!"

"Of course, Mrs. Fitz!" Melissa chuckled. "You're gonna be too busy enjoying your family life now."

"What?" Aria scoffed.

"You've learned your lesson," Melissa tilted her head. "You've earned it!"

"What are you talking about?"

"Life, Aria!" Melissa got off her seat as well. "You're not the silly little girl anymore. You don't follow anyone right now, can you see that? You're a woman!"

"I..."

"I wanted you to know that!" In one of her rare true moments, Melissa smiled at her. "You are safe now. Enjoy your life!" And with that, she turned around and the policeman took her out of the room.

Aria stood there few more minutes, unable to react. She shook her head and turned around, leaving that place behind her back. When she was outside, she took a deep breath and looked up the sky. Then she closed her eyes and when she opened them she looked straight ahead. She felt that Melissa didn't lie to her this time. Aria was one of those people, who could lie perfectly, but she could also recognize the lie. Now, Melissa didn't lie to her. Now, Aria was sure that there wasn't going to be any trial. Melissa just wanted to see her, talk to her. But why her though? Why not her own sister? Aria always felt that Spencer was the unspoken leader of their group, but she also needed to be that leader. It made her feel better. None of the other girls felt that need. Everyone of them had stared into their own problems. Melissa was right. They needed someone like "A" to show them what the real life could be. She was also wrong, however because she went too far. It was all game for her, but not for Aria and her friends. They had learned their lesson and that made them stronger and closer than before.

She took a deep breath again and got into her car. It was time for her to go back home. A smile touched her lips when she started the engine. Home, where her family was. Her new family of her loving husband and her sweet little daughter. They meant the world to Aria. Yeah, Melissa was right about this too. She was a woman now. She wasn't the spoiled little girl she was in the past. Being a wife and a mother, was something that Aria never imagined that she would become. But then Ezra had appeared in her life and had brought all the happiness and love with him.

Her phone rang and she looked at the number. It was Ezra. "Hey," his voice sounded at the other side of the line. "Where are you?"

"I'm coming home," Aria spoke to him and sighed. "I talked with Melissa."

"Okay," Ezra said. "You're gonna tell me soon I guess?"

"Yeah," Aria smiled and hung up the phone.
