Leave Me Out Of This!

Chapter One: Bathroom Stalling

We were at the store, picking up some groceries, when they showed up.

To any normal person, they'd have looked like normal people just getting off of work. I knew better than that though. Dad had told me what to do in a situation like this.

"Cole," Jay said, snapping his fingers in front of my face, trying to get my attention. "Dude, you in there?"

I nodded, turning away from the group of five men standing by the tomatoes. "Yeah, I'm here." I muttered, casting a glance at the out of the corner of my eye. Part of me wanted to strangle Jay for shouting my name loud enough for the entire store to hear, and the other part of me wanted to just go over there and tell them that I wasn't interested.

"Great. I was asking you what vegetables we needed for the soup Zane was going to make. He gave us a list, but I kinda...lost it." He gave me a sheepish smile, face flushing lightly in embarrassment.

The group of men had moved closer, splintering off into three different groups.

They had us surrounded.

"He asked for green beans, corn, celery, potatoes, and he also asked us to bring back some barley and beef stock for the soup." I said, prattling off the ingredients like it was nothing. "I'll be right back." Walking past the guys, I made my way towards the bathrooms, which would be at the back of the store. Pulling out my phone, I sent a text to my dad.

They know who I am, and they know where to find me.

Sliding it shut, I slipped it back into my pocket. The store was quiet, and as I walked down the small, narrow hallway, I could hear footsteps behind me. There was the unmistakable clicking of dress shoes on tile.

Click, click, click, click.

Whoever was following me was moving fast towards me, walking, not running. Staying calm, I took in my surroundings, keeping my expression blank, acting like I was unaware. If they thought I didn't know they were there, it might make them back off.

Pushing open the door to the men's room, I stepped inside, going into the stall furthest away from the door, closing it silently, and locking it.

The door to the men's room opened again, and the clicking of dress shoes followed in. I pulled myself up onto the toilet seat, pressing against one wall. They could check under the door, and they wouldn't see anything.

'Jay's gonna worry if I don't get back soon...' I thought, waiting. Looking down, I could see the shoes had paused right in front of my stall. Perfect, just perfect.

They turned, walking away. There was the sound of something hissing, and metal hitting the tiles by the door, rolling across them.

Furrowing my eyebrows, I smelled it first. The all too familiar, sickly sweet smell. Pulling the lip of my hoodie over my nose and mouth, I knew I needed to get out of here fast.

There was a click, and then the hissing got louder. 'No...there're two.' One was soft, and slow, the one releasing the knock-out gas. The second one, was loud, and fast. Thick clouds of smoke billowed around me, filling up the stall, also tainted with the gas.

The world felt like it was spinning, and I fumbled blindly with the lock, opening the door, and trying to get out of the bathroom. 'I already told them no...'

My legs crumpled beneath me as the world twisted around me faster. Colors faded.

These guys didn't understand what no meant.
