I don't own Vampire Diaries and it sure feels like shit.

Chapter Eighteen

Say what you mean
Tell me I'm right
And let the sun rain down on me
Give me a sign
I want to believe….

-The ballad of Mona lisa by Panic! at the disco.

Nyx Evyanton knew in her heart that whatever she saw, she would never turn against Nikolas. How could you turn against the man who had given you the gift of life while you walked as a corpse, lost in you past?

'He killed my Veritas, consumed his heart, his powers, all Veritas had ever been. And yet his love for Verrira was never tainted. He became what my Veritas could have been. He became a nightmare for my husband. He destroyed creations, all those life forms that Veritas designed. He eradicated every drop of Veritas' blood. He made sure I could never resurrect my son.' Marissia tried to touch the young man bound to the pillars beneath the waterfall. Her hand passed through him again and again.

After all they were just memories, weren't they? But they looked so real.

Nyx saw Nikki plunge inside Veritas' heart and she flinched as he took it out, a live beating heart. She averted her eyes as Veritas screamed, begged for his heart. Nikki just laughed.

'Did you stop when she begged?' his voice was calm just like the world is before the storm.

Nyx saw as Nikolas consumed the heart, slowly, deliberatively. Veritas kept screaming and that unholy smile never slipped from Nikki's face. Tears were a constant outpour from Marissia's eyes as was the litany of her son's name. Bit by bit Nikki consumed the essence of Veritas after eating his heart. There was no mercy, no compassion on the face that had become so dear to Nyx.

'A monster. Nikolas was a monster after that. Veritas' power of creation combined with his power of destruction. He is a god in every manner of speaking. Even my sons come together for creation. Nikolas single handedly creates and destroys. Due to his claim on Verrira, her power shifts to compliment his in every way, and that stupid girl never knows. When she faces her enemies, his power flows in her veins. His power becomes her weapon; he is the sword that always shields her.' Marissia hissed.

The scene around Nyx shifted and she found herself standing in the motel room where Isobel Fleming was kissing a very aroused John Gilbert. She knew Marissia was bluffing. Nikolas could never be her father. She turned around. She need not see the very act of procreation that created her.

'Oh don't be such a prude Elena.' Marissia chuckled as she turned her around and pried her eyes open. Did this woman have no shame?

'Look closely child. Look beneath the façade Nikolas wears.'

John Gilbert was glowing; his eyes were twin peaks of sun. She saw his form blurring for a moment after which it came in instant clarity. In that blurring she had seen Nikolas' face, but right now all she could see was John Gilbert.

'He never wore his real face when he had these liaisons. He always became what the woman secretly desired, never himself.'

She shut her eyes, lashes clamped tightly and yet she could hear the sound of flesh hitting flesh, grunts and moans that reached a crescendo where Isobel and Nikolas both shattered. She might have been trying to ignore the noise but she heard his whispered 'Verrira' quiet clearly.

'So, do you believe me now? Nikolas is your father and his blood is the reason of your each sorrow.'

She didn't feel any different. Now that she knew whose blood ran in her veins, it didn't make her go instantly in rage. She didn't want to confront Nikolas, didn't want to cry why he had deserted her. No, she didn't want to do all of those things. Marissia had done the opposite. In place of turning her against Nikolas, she had let Nyx see the side of Nikki that no one saw. He loved Verrira. He had done everything in his power to keep her safe. He had never shown how much he hurt when she went on with myriad number of people. He smiled when she smiled. He took her tears for his own eyes. He was a god, and yet the god bled when she desired.

How had Verrira never seen this love? How had she remained oblivious to everything Nikki was for her?

Nyx was going to bring them together, her Nikki and Verrira. And damned be anyone who stood in her path.

'Are we done lady? 'Cause I have to go back.' She spat.

'It will be my pleasure little Elena.' Marissia chuckled.

She felt the world come in instant focus. The people were still frozen, bar Nikolas. She saw him waiting near her, his hand on her head. His eyes were focused on someone who was standing in front and she knew who it was.

'How dare you?' the voice was barely leashed fury, one that would have killed any mortal or supernatural of this realm with fear it carried in its wake but not the creep bitch.

'How dare I what?' Marissia taunted.

Nyx tried to sit on her own but drained as she was from the harrowing experience of witnessing memories; she was relieved when Nikolas helped her in a sitting position. She was sorry to see the concern on his face. How worried he must have been.

'You ok Nyx?'

She nodded her assent. His eyes roamed over her to check any existing injury. Satisfied, that she really was fine, he turned on Marissia with the ferocity of an avenging angel.

'Left realm eternal on the whims and fancy of your machinations, did you Marissia?'

She just smiled in that creepy way of hers and started observing the ceiling as if it held a very interesting piece of puzzle.

'Oh I understand now. You must be missing your Veritas.' He smirked at the reaction he got. 'But sorry to inform you that I am still me, no signs of your son in here.' he tapped his heart in a mocking gesture.

She flew at him, this woman with unearthly features and crazy eyes. He didn't even move as he flicked her aside.

'Don't test me Marissia. We both know my superiority. Why go and challenge it?' he ridiculed.

'You thief. You scoundrel. You stole everything you are from my son.'

'I am who I was before I devoured your son. Let's just say his blood was an added bonus.' He let Marissia struggle on floor while he picked Nyx up and deposited her on couch beside Carissa.

And then he turned to face Marissia.

'It was clever of you to point Azmor in this direction to salvage his guilty conscience. But do you think she will ever go back to that man? Or I would ever let that happen? Igor came calling early in the morning.' He smirked.

'Do you think she would forget her first love?'

'I will kill your elemental Marissia, and send his pieces back to your husband in a box.' Nikolas snarled. 'I lost her once, I won't lose her again.'

'Even if you have to burn the world for her?' there was a gleam in creepy bitch's eye that Nyx didn't like.

'Burn the world?' Nikolas laughed. 'I will pile bodies in a shrine, starting with you if she wants. Destruction? You have not even got a glimpse of what I am capable of Marissia. I will end creation itself if she desires….'

So what is the verdict? Review below and let me know. Till then stay tuned for 'the Broken Promises of always and forever.'
