It was on a night like this.
When the sky was a dark ocean of clouds and the stars twinkled like jellyfish in an upside down world. It was on a night just like this, when the snow danced like falling fairies all those years ago. Natsume's sharp eyes gazed past the snowflakes, lost in a time long passed.
"...me."
"Kiss me."
He'd always been truthful to his desires, but he couldn't express emotion for shit. His eyes were lost in the empty cobblestone pathway before the two of them. He wasn't romantic. He didn't wear his heart on his sleeve. The dark haired boy glanced down at the petit brunette at this, letting out a silent sigh. He didn't know how she made it look so easy.
His mind wandered again, grasping for some possible way to make this easier.
"Now tell me you love me."
The snow continued to dance, kissing her skin and caressing her long hair. Natsume eyed a nearby bench, gaze travelling down the ice kissed pavement and up the naked cherry blossom trees on either side of them.
"Hey, Natsume?" Her sweet voice rose into the air, carried away with the breeze.
He grunted in response, immersed in his thoughts.
"Is something bothering you?" She laced her nimble fingers through his, poking her small chin out of her red scarf as she gazed up at him, "you've been really quiet lately."
He kept his head angled straight ahead but passed her a glance, meeting her doe brown eyes.
The silence stretched. Then he stopped moving altogether.
Standing there in the centre of the passageway he turned to face her, the warmth of their hands burning through his knit glove.
Natsume leaned in, glancing at the glow of a nearby streetlight before meeting her big, brown eyes.
"Mikan," he breathed.
"Kiss me." The wind fluttered past his bright red scarf and iced his face as he waited for her reaction, but he had no intention of looking away.
She chewed on her lip a little, the corners of her mouth turned upwards. She brought a slender hand to his face, gently squeezing the one placed in his own as she tipped forward.
It was light at first. Innocent, like it had been that night. She pressed in closer, and he could feel her face warm even more against his. Natsume slid his free hand through her hair and felt her smile into the kiss.
He hooked his arm around her waist, pulling her closer into him, and let his hands wander lower to where he knew she liked them. She pulled away at this, face beet red. Her eyes glanced left and right bashfully.
She flicked her tongue over her slightly swollen lips, meeting his gaze as she parted her lips to speak.
"Now tell me you love me," he interjected, dark eyes boring into hers. He silently wondered if she even remembered.
Mikan blinked, and suddenly her eyes lit up.
"You should be saying it," she teased, smiling bashfully nonetheless.
Natsume smiled a small smile, "I'll say it after you do."
"I love you," Mikan whispered, unable to keep her lips from breaking into a toothy grin, "you idiot Natsume."
She stepped forward, the wind tossing her hair to the side, "I love you, you selfish moron" her voice cracked but she could never tear her eyes away from his gaze, "I honestly do."
"Then marry me," Natsume's gaze never wavered.
Mikan gasped, eyes widening. Her eyes twinkled and her nose crinkled as it turned red. She hid her face against his coat, unable to find a voice.
She looked up through her eyelashes and smiled a peaceful smile. Natsume watched her, captivated.
Mikan stood on her tip-toes, leaning into him for a final kiss.
"I will," she whispered.
And the snow danced around them like falling fairies. Just as it had all those years ago, on a night unlike this.
