A/N I wrote this as an assignment on Hogwarts is Here where we had to write about a spell and I just decided to post it here as well. I've never written James and Lily before so let me know what you think.
James watched as his son zoomed around the room on his new toy broomstick. He couldn't wait until he was old enough to play Quidditch. James just knew Harry would be the best player, no matter what position he played.
While James wasn't paying attention, Harry had glided closer to the bookshelf. Before he could stop it, he saw Harry colliding with the bookshelf. But just before he slammed into it, he noticed it glowing a strange pinkish-purple color and as Harry hit into it, he bounced right off. James looked at the bookshelf in confusion.
"James," he heard the angry voice of his wife behind him causing him to jump slightly. He smiled at her sheepishly as she walked over to Harry and picked him up. "If you aren't going to watch him while he's on that thing, he's not going to be allowed to ride it."
"I'll watch him, love. But just in case, what was that spell?" Lily sighed and took out her wand, pointing it at the bookshelf once again. "Spongify," she said and the bookshelf glowed pinkish-purple. "It's the Softening Charm. Honestly, didn't you ever pay attention at Hogwarts? That's a first year spell, James."
"Exactly. First year was like what, ten years ago? You expect me to remember a spell from that long ago?" He looked at her suspiciously. "Besides, I bet you forgot about it too. You probably found it in one of your parenting books." James looked at his wife with a triumphant grin as she spluttered and tried to look offended.
"No, I remembered it. From school." Before she could do anything about it, James was running over to the bookshelf and grabbing her favorite parenting book.
"Oh, look at this," James said as he looked at the table of contents. "Chapter four, Spongify, the Softening Spell."
"Fine," Lily laughed. "I forgot about it, okay? Happy now?"
"Yes," James said, leaning in to kiss her cheek.
"You are so annoying," Lily returned with a smile before kissing him back.
