The penultimate week of physical training passes in a blur of sweat, aching muscles and paranoia, but finally on a drizzly Saturday an opportunity to slip out of the compound, a small silver memory stick clutched in my hand arrives.

The cold bites my face as I jog alongside the rickety looking cargo train guaranteed to have no one but a driver aboard. Perfect.

I slide on with a grace I could of only dreamed of the first time I messily clambered onto a Dauntless bound train, and settle myself between two large wooden crates to keep out of view.

The city whizzes past me the buildings molding into large grey paint spots bleeding out across the perfect blue sky, and people slip in and out of my vision in multicoloured blobs for half an hour until the perfectly aligned buildings merge into broken shacks, and the shiny clean streets become littered with years of rubbish.

I quickly straighten and edge slowly to the train door, before jumping unapologetically out of the train rolling as my feet smack the dirty concrete and tumbling a few meters before skidding to a halt.

The factionless is much the same as I remember it from the last visit. Dirty, broken and smelly. I cannot imagine anything less dignified than living amongst these people, in this place. I cannot imagine why anyone would choose this life. I would rather be dead than on my knees begging for societies scraps.

As I walk deeper into the sector buildings begi to loom threateningly over me blocking out the sunlight once again, and making little goosebumps push their way to the top of my skin, and the smoke is beginning to make me feel light headed and sick. The quicker I can get out of here the better as far as I'm concerned.

A few minutes later I reach the familiar red painted door and knock three times quickly, and then twice slowly as I remembered the man who brung me here last time doing. The door swings quickly open to the same grotty looking woman.

"Evelyns kid?" She croaks eyeing me up and down.

Fighting the urge to cover myself I nod quickly and slip past her into the building. She is clad in the same tank top and trousers as the last time I visited my Mother and I am beginning to wonder whether the factionless ever change their clothes, or wash even.

"Number 12." She grunts gesturing the overly modern lift in the back corner of the room. "You know what to do."

With that she slips back through a door I hadn't noticed before into what appears from the brief glance I get to be a hidden office. Lined with seemingly organised files, and a cracked office desk.

I slip into the lift and hit the level I want trying not to leave my stomach at the bottom as it whizzes jerkily up to my Mother's office.

Around a minute later the doors slide open to reveal the same white door, with my Mothers name plate stuck perfectly to it.

I knock once before pushing my way into her office, I really just want to get out of here as soon as I can.

Evelyn sits like last time alert at her desk waiting for me to show up.

"Jane, darling it's wonderful to see you again so soon. Have you got the memory stick?" She smiles warmly but there is a hint of impatience behind her seemingly kind greeting.

I push my fingers into the front pocket of my Dauntless distributed skinny jeans and pull out the small silver memory stick before sliding it across the rough surface of Evelyns office desk.

"And where's it from?"

"The computer in the control room, I don't know what's on it exactly but I guess it could be useful."

"Did your brother get it?"

"No, I did. He's not going to help." I sigh.

My Mother studies the stick carefully for a few moments before placing into the top drawer if her desk, which she quickly slides closed behind her.

"Well thanks darling, you can see yourself out?" She answers the question for me by burying her head in her work, so I slip quietly out the door and return back to the lift. Mothers.

I make it back to the Dauntless compound an hour later and quickly locate Claudia in the transfer dorm.

"Hey guys." I smile spotting Claudia, Marley, Lily and Richie sitting together on her bed.

"Hey Jane." Claudia's face lights up excitedly when she sees me. " Your brother came in here looking for you a minute ago. "He seemed pretty desperate, I would go find him if I were you."

"Yeah okay, thanks Claudia. I'll see you in a bit." I laugh and turn to leave the dorm.

The Dauntless compound is as noisy and cramped as ever as push through trying to find Tobias. After a few fruitless minutes of elbowing my way around the pit to find him I decide to head up to his and Tris' apartment.

Halfway through my first knock the door swings abruptly open, revealing a very panicked looking Tobias. "Oh thank God Jane." He sighs grabbing my jacket and pulling me into his apartment.

"What Toby?" I ask brushing him off impatiently.

"Something was stolen, from the control room last week on my watch. A memory stick, and unless I can get it back they're going to fire me." His voice is released is gravely gasps.

Guilt floods through me icy cold, freezing my organs and sending everything into slow mo. My Brother is going to be fired. Because of me. Suddenly my head spins causing the whole world to tilt, and I have to reach out a shaking hand to steady myself against the wall.

"Jane?" Concern coats Tobias' voice.

Then my hand slips and darkness embraces me as I go tumbling down to the floor.

Again another stupidly slow update :( Sorry.

Please let me know what you thought :)
