Chapter 38: I'm Yours and You're Mine
Donna broke the news to Rachel as soon as she went back to work on Monday. She was waiting by the elevator at the ground floor of their office building early Monday morning when Rachel caught up with her.
"Good morning, Rachel!" chirped Donna.
"Well you look happy today," observed Rachel, standing beside Donna and smiling at her friend.
"How can I not be? I had a great time on my birthday. London was awesome and Harvey was just wonderful!" she answered with a big sigh and a smile.
Rachel knew all about Donna's trip to London with Harvey that weekend.
"That's great, Donna."
"Actually there's more to it than that," said Donna brimming with excitement.
Just then, the elevator doors opened. Donna stepped into the elevator followed closely by Rachel.
"What happened?" asked Rachel.
Donna pressed the button going to the 50th floor.
"We got engaged!" she answered excitedly.
"What?!" said Rachel, her jaw dropping in surprise just as the elevator doors began to close.
But before Rachel could react any further, a hand suddenly shot between the elevator doors, momentarily stopping it from closing. It was Louis. He quickly got into the elevator with them.
"Good morning, ladies," he greeted them as he stood beside Donna.
Both women looked at Louis wordlessly, not minding the interruption. The elevator doors finally closed.
Louis suddenly did a double take and stared at Donna.
"There's something different about you today. Did you go to the spa?" he asked.
Donna was about to reply when Rachel butt in.
"No, she just got engaged!" burst out Rachel in delight.
"What? Is that true?" he asked looking at Donna.
"She's right. Harvey and I got engaged over the weekend," replied Donna smiling.
"So that's why you're practically glowing today. Congratulations!"
Louis hugged Donna happily.
"Thanks, Louis."
"Hey, how come you don't have an engagement ring?" asked Rachel while eyeing Donna's fingers.
"Oh, it was a spur-of-the-moment thing when Harvey asked me. He wasn't planning on it. It just happened so fast," answered Donna shrugging her shoulders.
"So I'm guessing you finally told him you love him," commented Rachel.
Donna nodded happily.
"I knew it! I knew the two of you are meant to be together. It's only a matter of time," said Louis grinning from ear to ear.
The elevator stopped on the 50th floor.
"So have you set a date for the wedding already?" asked Rachel while stepping out of the elevator with Donna. Louis stepped out from behind them.
"Yes, it's tomorrow."
Rachel suddenly stopped and turned towards Donna while Louis hovered nearby, equally surprised.
"Tomorrow?! But that's too soon! How are you going to prepare ̶ "
"We just want a simple wedding for now so we're getting married at the New York City Hall."
"Harvey couldn't wait that long, huh? How uncharacteristic of him given his history with women!" said Louis.
"No offense meant, Donna. I actually mean that as a compliment," he added quickly.
"None taken. Actually, I'm inviting the two of you," said Donna.
"Great! I'll be there!" answered Louis.
With a small wave, Louis left them and headed towards his office.
"Rachel, will you help me pick out a dress for my wedding tomorrow?" Donna asked her friend.
"Of course!"
"Good! Let's meet for lunch later then we can shop for the perfect dress."
"Agreed!"
With that, Donna headed straight to her office while Rachel walked towards hers.
Harvey walked into Jessica's office that morning grinning like a Cheshire cat. Jessica was sitting on the sofa reading a document when he came in.
"Harvey! Just the person I've been meaning to talk to," said Jessica.
"If it's about the new case, that can wait. I'm here to ask you a favor," he answered.
"Really? Well that's a first," she said crossing her arms.
Harvey told her about his plans.
"I guess congratulations are in order. And I'm honored that you came to me for help on this," smiled Jessica.
"So you'll help me?" he asked.
"Sure!"
"Thanks, Jessica."
She looked at him for a few seconds.
"My, my! Who would have thought that you of all people are getting married?"
"A bit of a shock, isn't it?" said Harvey with a smile.
"Donna is one lucky woman."
"No, I'm the lucky one," he corrected her.
She smiled.
"I gotta say, I'm liking this new side of you, Harvey. Donna certainly brings out the best in you."
"She always has," he answered.
He turned and went out of her office whistling to himself.
Harvey did not waste time setting up a schedule with Judge Hopkins. He called him up as soon as he got into his office and told him about his wedding plan. The judge graciously agreed to marry them the next day. Bertha and Mike soon found out about the wedding and they were all invited for the ceremony along with Jessica, Rachel, Louis and Tom.
By mid-morning, Harvey and Donna dropped by at the New York City Hall to get their marriage license. They went back to the firm soon after and became busy for the rest of the morning as they focused on finishing their work to give time for their wedding the next day. At lunchtime, Donna and Rachel headed for the store while Harvey made a few arrangements himself. Donna filled in Rachel with the details of her weekend with Harvey as they shop for a simple white dress.
"So you're going to live in Harvey's apartment now, huh," said Rachel.
They were flipping through racks of white dresses in an upscale store.
"That's the plan. I'll pack a few things tonight then ask Tom to deliver them to Harvey's," answered Donna.
"Gosh, Donna. I still can't believe that you're getting married tomorrow – and the fact that Harvey asked you to marry him!"
"I know, right! It's like a dream come true."
Donna pulled out a dress from the rack and turned to a nearby mirror, checking to see if the outfit was to her liking. She frowned and turned to Rachel.
"You know, I never thought I'd end up with him after all. When I fell for him the first time, I didn't think he would love me back," she said looking a little wistful.
"But he does now, and he adores you. That's all that matters," reassured Rachel.
"Right!" smiled Donna.
She put the dress back on the rack then flipped through the other racks. Forty-five minutes went by before Donna finally spotted the perfect dress for her wedding.
Harvey visited Donna in her office by the end of the day. The hallways were already deserted by then and Donna's two staff left earlier. Tom lingered in his cubicle, compiling documents and putting them in a binder. Donna was finishing an email when Harvey walked in.
"You're still working? I thought you're leaving early to do some packing," asked Harvey walking towards her.
"I just need to send a couple of emails then I'm going home," she said looking up from her laptop.
He stood across her desk and smiled down at her.
"So are you ready for the big day tomorrow?" he asked.
"I sure am. In fact, I already have the perfect dress," she answered, leaning back in her chair.
"And I already got us our wedding rings – thanks to Jessica."
"Jessica?" asked Donna.
"Yes. I asked her to help me pick out the rings."
"Really? Can I see them?" Donna stood up and went over to Harvey's side.
He shook his head.
"I don't have them now. I asked Mike to keep them for me until tomorrow."
"Right! I almost forgot he's our ring bearer," smiled Donna.
He frowned slightly as he suddenly remembered something.
"What's wrong?"
"I didn't give you an engagement ring," he said guiltily.
"Oh, it's fine, Harvey. Don't worry about it."
"But you should have ̶ "
"It's okay, Harvey. It doesn't matter anymore since we're getting married tomorrow anyway."
"Are you sure you don't want one? Because I can buy you one, you know," he persisted.
She gave him a reassuring kiss.
"Yes, I'm sure."
He smiled and pulled her closer to him.
"I promise we'll have a second wedding after this. Then we can invite all our friends and family and have a grand reception," he said, his arms wrapped around her waist.
"A small wedding would be just fine. My mom feels bad that she and Dad couldn't come and see me walk down the aisle tomorrow. But I told her that we will have another ceremony soon. They can't wait to meet you."
"And I'm looking forward to meeting them. I also called Marcus and he told me he couldn't make it to the ceremony tomorrow. Apparently he's still stuck in a conference in Boston. He sends his love and best wishes, by the way."
"That's sweet of him."
Donna put her arms around Harvey's shoulders.
"You know, I really don't care for big weddings, or expensive jewelry. As long as I have you, I'm fine. And it doesn't even matter if you're a hotshot lawyer earning millions per year or that guy in the mail room. I only want that sweet, sensitive and brilliant man who cares about people – the one I used to know back at the DA's Office," she said.
"I'm still that man, Donna. The guy who used to work in the mail room; the man you knew at the DA's Office – I'm still all that."
"I know. And I love you just as you are."
She kissed him.
"You know, I'm still glad I became a lawyer. Because if I stayed working in the mail room, I wouldn't have met you," he said to her softly.
"That's true," she smiled at him.
Just then, her cellphone rang.
"That must be Wilfred, asking about the email I'm supposed to send him," she sighed, pulling away from him.
"In that case, I'll leave you to it. See you at City Hall tomorrow," he said.
He cupped her face and kissed her goodbye before heading for the door.
Donna went back to her desk, picked up her phone and answered the call.
The day of the wedding came. Rachel stayed overnight at Donna's place to help her pack and get ready for the wedding. At 8:30 AM, they were picked up by Ray in Harvey's black car who drove them to the New York City Hall. Donna and Rachel arrived at the entrance of the City Hall just as Harvey alighted from his Ford Mustang. His sharp, gray suit, dark blue tie and perfectly combed hair made him look even more dashing under the bright, morning sun. Bertha and Tom were already at the entrance waiting for them.
Rachel got out first from the car, carrying Donna's small bouquet of white roses. Then Donna alighted from the car, carefully smoothing her white dress.
"There's my bride-to-be," greeted Harvey with a charming smile.
"Harvey," she smiled at him, her face glowing with happiness.
He walked towards her, his eyes never leaving hers. Donna was wearing a simple white, form-fitting dress with a Sabrina neckline and a hemline that reached just above her knees. The dress had a V-shaped back fastened by small buttons. The soft curls of her long red hair hung loosely below her shoulders.
"You look beautiful," he said as he gave her a quick kiss.
"Thanks," she answered.
"Well hopefully we won't have to wait too long before you officially become Mrs. Harvey Specter."
"Mrs. Harvey Specter... Hmm, I like the sound of that," she replied with a twinkle in her eyes.
"Me too."
The screech of a bicycle caught their attention as they turned to look and saw Mike parking his bike on the side of the street near where they were standing.
"Hi, Mike," greeted Rachel as she approached him.
"Hey, guys," said Mike as he gave a little wave before getting off from his bike.
"It's about time you got here. Please tell me you have the rings?" asked Harvey, looking at Mike.
"Don't worry, Harvey. They're here," assured Mike, patting the pockets of his pants.
Louis arrived shortly after, followed by Jessica and Judge Hopkins.
The group went inside the City Hall and sat together waiting for their turn as other couples were wed in the City Clerk's Office. It didn't take long before they were finally ushered in to the City Clerk's Office where Judge Hopkins took over and officiated the ceremony. The ceremony was short and sweet. Rachel teared up a little as she watched her dear friend marry the best lawyer in the city. Louis was practically in tears as well, while Bertha and Tom felt humbly honored to be a part of an intimate gathering of friends.
After the ceremony, the group made their way towards an upscale restaurant near the City Hall, where Harvey and Donna hosted a brunch for their guests. Judge Hopkins declined to join them, telling Harvey that he had to leave right away to attend to an important case.
Inside the restaurant, the group sat at a long table in a private room, with Donna and Harvey sitting side by side at the center as bride and groom. Rachel sat beside Donna while Mike was sitting beside Harvey. They chatted merrily among themselves as waiters served food at their table. A few minutes into their brunch, Jessica clinked her glass of champagne and stood up to toast Harvey and Donna's marriage.
"Everyone, I'd like to make a toast to Harvey and Donna, who by the way make a pretty handsome couple," she said, holding her glass and smiling at Harvey and Donna across the table. The crowd at the table looked on.
"Years ago when Harvey brought Donna to the firm, I knew she was already special. I might not be familiar with her previous work at the DA's Office but I do know that Harvey thought highly of her – and still does. Through the years, I saw just how important Donna is to Harvey, not just in the professional sense but as a friend and trusted advisor. I mean, the guy couldn't practically survive without her," said Jessica, giving Harvey a look. Donna, Louis, Mike and Rachel chuckled while Harvey just smiled sheepishly.
"Little did I know that that professional relationship would blossom into something more," Jessica continued.
"Now I know it's a love story 11 years in the making. And I'm so happy that Harvey finally found his match – a woman equal of his character and brilliance. Congratulations to both of you and I wish you all the happiness in the world. Here's to Harvey and Donna," she said raising her glass.
"To Harvey and Donna," chorused Louis, Rachel and Mike while raising their glass.
"Hear, hear!" chimed in Bertha and Tom.
Jessica sipped her wine and sat back down at the table. Harvey stood up and addressed the group:
"Thank you, Jessica. And I'd also like to thank everyone for coming today. I know it's a short notice but Donna and I really appreciate that you're all here with us celebrating our special day. I'd also like to take this opportunity to say a few words."
He turned and smiled down at his bride beside him. Donna smiled back at him with love in her eyes.
"When I first met Donna, I didn't know I was getting more than a secretary. But over the years, she turned out to be more than what I expected. Not only she became my trusted ally and staunch supporter, but she also became my best friend. And when I finally realized how I really feel about her, I told myself that if I was lucky enough to have her, I'd be the happiest man on earth."
Donna took his hand and held it in hers, looking up at him with a big smile on her face. Bertha was practically swooning in the background while Tom was fanning himself tearfully with a hand. Harvey continued:
"I win cases. It's what I do. And no matter how hard some of them were, I eventually come out as a winner. But getting Donna to say yes and winning her heart eventually was probably the hardest thing I've ever done – and the longest!"
Louis piped up:
"Well it's only right that Donna gave you a hard time, considering the many years she had to put up with your shit!" he smirked.
Everyone at the table laughed at this.
"What is this – a toast or a roast?" asked Harvey, giving Louis a wry look.
"Hey, lay off on Harvey, will you?" butt in Donna, throwing Louis a warning look.
"I'm only teasing, Donna," giggled Louis.
"I know," she answered with a giggle.
"Anyway, as I was saying..." continued Harvey.
"I didn't mind that I had to win Donna over. It was all worth it. You were all worth it," he finished, looking down at Donna.
She squeezed his hand as he bent over and gave her a kiss.
The crowd at the table erupted into cheers as Harvey sat down. Louis stood up from his chair and cleared his throat.
"My turn to give you a toast," he said, holding his glass.
"A toast, Louis – not a roast," reminded Jessica who was sitting beside him.
Louis just shrugged at Jessica and smiled at the bride and groom in front of him.
"I would just like to congratulate both of you for finally making it happen. I know the two of you are pretty close. You have this great bond that no one can break. And I've watched you become more than just colleagues over the years. I even enjoyed some of the practical jokes you pulled on me. But if there's one thing I know for sure, it's that you love each other and deserve to be happy. So here's to you, Harvey and Donna," he raised his glass.
"Cheers!" chimed in Mike, raising his glass.
"Thank you, Louis," smiled Donna.
"Oh, one more thing," added Louis.
"I would like to congratulate Donna for snagging the most eligible, hard-to-catch bachelor in town!"
Laughter erupted at the table.
Louis turned and looked at Donna.
"Donna, you have done what other women failed to do. You have managed to capture Harvey's heart and succeeded in getting him to put a ring on your finger!"
Everyone chuckled amusedly on Louis' attempts to tease the newly married couple.
"Well, what can I say. That's because I'm pretty awesome!" answered Donna with sass, twirling a strand of her hair.
Harvey just chuckled in amusement.
An hour later, the group finally left the restaurant. The guests watched Harvey and Donna got into his Ford Mustang and drove away while Ray drove the black car back to Harvey's apartment. Jessica and the rest of the party all went back to the firm eventually.
"Where are we going?" asked Donna, looking at the streets around them.
She was sitting in the passenger seat while Harvey was driving. It was only twenty minutes since they left the restaurant.
"This isn't the way back to your apartment," she observed.
The silver wedding ring on her finger shone as it caught the sunlight drifting through the windows.
"I know. We're going somewhere else," answered Harvey.
"Are you telling me there's another surprise waiting for me?" she asked.
"Yup!" he smiled at her.
"Ooh, Harvey. You're so full of surprises!"
"Wait till you see it. You're going to love it," he said with a mysterious smile.
A few minutes later, Harvey parked the Ford Mustang in front of a sprawling, three-storey house in an opulent neighborhood. Donna got out of the car and stared at the house before them. The house stood in the middle of a lush, perfectly landscaped garden complete with a small fountain and a gazebo.
"Is this what I think it is?" she asked in awe.
Harvey stood next to her, his hands in his pockets.
"Yes. This is our new home," he answered with a big grin.
"Really? Oh Harvey, it looks wonderful! I love it!" she hugged him excitedly.
He chuckled as he hugged her back.
"I knew you would. Come on, let's go inside and I'll show you around," he said tugging her hand and leading her towards the front door of the house.
They went from room to room inside the well-furnished house with Donna squealing at every turn.
"How did you manage to arrange all this?" she asked him while they were standing in the balcony on the third floor.
"Bertha helped me. I purchased the house the day she started working for me. I also hired an interior designer to furnish the rooms."
"But what about your apartment?"
"It's already on the market. I'm selling it."
"Why?"
"Because that was a bachelor's apartment. This is a family home," he answered with a smile.
She nodded in understanding. Truth be told, she wasn't truly comfortable staying in his apartment. She particularly disliked going in his bedroom since it reminded her of the women he used to entertain there.
Harvey moved closer to her.
"Look, I know you didn't like staying in my apartment for reasons that I can guess. That's why I bought this house for us. We can start our own family here."
"Aw, that's so sweet," she wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him.
She pulled back as she remembered something.
"Hey, wait a minute. I asked Tom to deliver my things to your apartment."
"I already took care of it. I told Tom to send them here instead. Your things are already in our bedroom."
"Really?"
She turned and left the balcony and headed towards a large room in the corner. Harvey followed her.
True enough, the clothes she packed hung neatly in a walk-in closet in their bedroom.
"Oh, Harvey, you never ceases to amaze me!" she exclaimed happily as she walked around the big closet, checking the cabinets. Harvey stood near the closet door watching her.
Harvey cleared his throat.
"Actually, I'm here to collect my reward," he grinned at her.
"What reward?" she asked puzzled.
He arched an eyebrow.
"I told you I'm getting my reward after I win you over, remember?"
"Oh... that reward!" she replied with a smile.
Before she could say anything more, Harvey picked her up and carried her towards the king-sized bed. She squealed in surprise and giggled when she landed with a soft thud on the bed.
"Well I can see your patience is wearing thin," she said with a sexy drawl.
Harvey propped himself up next to her while she laid back on the bed. He gazed down at her fondly as he caressed her cheek.
"You're finally mine," he said softly.
"And I'm yours to keep," she answered in soft whisper, looking up at him lovingly.
She pulled him close to her and ardently kissed him while his arms went around her waist.
