Chapter III
To Love and to Cherish
A shiny black Lexus stopped in the middle of the cemetery. It was a sunny day. The sky was painted in bright blue with cotton like clouds.
A little girl with reddish brown hair, and brown eyes pushed the back seat door open and stepped onto the freshly cut grass. In silence, and with a bouquet of flowers in hand, she followed through the path that led to her parents' grave. She narrowed her gaze because of the bright sun, and pursed her rosy pink lips together as soon as she stood before the white marble gravestone.
The large headstone stood tall above her. She kneeled before it, placing the flowers on top of the grass.
"I punched Lucy Litt in the face," she suddenly confessed. "It was an accident. I wanted to show her my best right hand." She traced her small hand over the engraved names on the tombstone.
In loving memory of
Harvey and Donna Specter-Paulsen.
"Also, I'm going into foster care because uncle Mike, and aunt Rachel are in jail for fraud." The little girl continued speaking.
Harvey woke up with a jolt, sweating profusely and out of breath.
Hell.
That was the worst dream he ever had.
A little lost, he looked around the immaculate white room.
He was in the hospital.
Harvey immediately remembered it all. Mike and Rachel had been by his side when he regained consciousness the night before. The first thing he asked about was Donna, "Where is Donna?" he whispered.
Mike and Rachel didn't lie. They told him she had to undergo surgery.
Harvey wanted to see her. He needed to see her.
The doctors didn't let him though. They injected him with something that made him feel high; higher than he'd ever felt — and sleepy. And of course he fell asleep, only to awaken by the sight of his and Donna's grave in a nightmare.
He was told that Donna was stable, that she was doing well despite of her delicate condition. That he would be able to see her in a few days.
But he didn't give a shit about what the doctors said.
He had to see her now.
Harvey pushed the sheets away, got out of bed, removed his IV line, and grabbed the black robe that hung on the back of the door. He reminded himself to thank Rachel for packing and bringing him a carry-on with essentials. Otherwise he'd have had to sneak out of the bedroom in a very risqué hospital gown.
He knew where Donna was. Mike and Rachel mentioned something like, "Just two doors away, to the right."
Slowly, he pushed a door open. Harvey immediately saw a glimpse of red hair and her beautiful face. She was fast asleep.
Quietly, he went into the room. Harvey was so relieved to see her.
Her eyelashes rested peacefully on her cheeks, and her bright red hair was spread out on the pillow.
He sat on her bedside without a sound. His gaze softened at the sight of the most amazing woman he had ever met.
He loved her, he loved her from the moment he met her. It took him so long to access those feelings. And he almost lost her.
He took one of her hands in his, hoping that she would open her eyes.
"Hey," he spoke softly, in almost a whisper. "They wouldn't let me see you."
Donna heard Harvey's voice in the distance.
It was like a distant echo coming clear as she roused from a deep sleep.
Slowly, she opened her eyes to find his chocolate brown gaze on her. Harvey touched her face gently with the back of his hand, hoping to finally awake her.
"Donna"
Donna regained consciousness, feeling a dull pain in her arm. It took her a couple of seconds to remember everything.
"Are you okay?" Harvey observed her, trying to tell if he needed to call a doctor.
"I'm not okay," Donna made an effort to focus on him. She was so drowsy. "I'm Donna."
Harvey smiled, giving her hand a soft squeeze. She was more than okay and as responsive as usual.
"Nice gown," she smiled a little.
"We're matching," Harvey pointed out.
Harvey and Donna exchanged an endearing gaze, acknowledging how lucky they were to be alive.
"I thought I lost you back there," he swallowed hard.
Donna looked at him, and because she knew Harvey more than anyone else, she could tell how upset he was.
"I was supposed to be the one protecting you," he continued. "But you just―"
"Harvey," she was ready to confess her fears during the ordeal, but unexpectedly, he leaned over to leave a kiss on her lips.
His hand cupped her face with tenderness as his lips touched hers. There was an urgent need in that touch, in that kiss. Harvey loved her so much, it hurt. It hurt to think he could've lost her. She saved him, she was always saving him in many ways. Donna saved him for years. He wouldn't have made it without her, he wouldn't be able to make it without her. Donna was his everything.
When they parted. they looked into each other's eyes for a moment.
Donna lifted a playful eyebrow at him.
"You're so into me," she said. Her eyes had a playful spark.
Harvey grinned in acknowledgement. "Hey," he suddenly remembered, "you owe me."
"Me?" Donna furrowed her brow. "Do I need to remind you that I saved your life?"
"Yes, but you assured me that we would crash on the couch, have a pizza and― "
"You want to unzip my dress again, don't you?" Donna read him.
"You have no idea," he leaned in closer once more. Her healthy arm enveloped around his shoulder, pulling him into another kiss.
They didn't kiss though. Harvey held back for a moment.
"I had a bad dream. We were dead."
Harvey was uncomfortable with the visuals the dream left in his head.
Donna arched her eyebrows at that, "That's a very bad dream."
"Mike and Rachel were raising our kid, they were going to jail for fraud and she was going to be left in foster care…She beat the shit out of Louis' daughter," Harvey paused. "Our baby is with them right now ―in their apartment, we have to do something."
"Okay―" Donna tried to process the information as fast as she could. "It was just a dream, Harvey. They are not going to jail, we aren't dead. We chose them well," she tried to reassure him.
"Okay," Harvey assented "I still want their hands off our baby."
Donna chuckled.
"They're her guardians, Harvey. They're supposed to look after her, plus, you know they adore her."
Harvey knew Donna was right. He knew Mike and Rachel loved their child. Their daughter had been born only a few months earlier, she had been a surprise baby, but a wonderful twist to the story of their lives. Harvey loved his little family. He couldn't help feel protective of his girls.
"You are right, " he moved closer to finally capture Donna's lips in a kiss one more time, softly breaking away, only to leave a trail of kisses along her cheek to her ear.
"I love you," he whispered into her soul.
Donna held him closer, because she loved him too.
"I love you more," she breathed.
"I love you even more than that," he chuckled.
They laughed quietly in each other's arms.
The pain in her arm didn't matter, because the wedding bands they had exchanged not long ago, were a reminder that the best was yet to come.
―THE END
Thanks for reading! And always remember Harvey's words: "It's not bragging, if it's true."
Have a great week!
