After the Crash: An Alpha Female

Chapter 10

Fat droplets of cool rain fell, dripping down through the thick foliage. The forest was alive with noise, crickets chirping, odd buzzing insects, the insistent nattering of birds, the sharp whistling from the wind as it passed through the trees. Nature at it's finest, till a small girl came crashing through the underbrush. Her once calm mane of hair was frayed about, but slowly sticking to her head the wetter she became. The leaves stuck in her hair and the mud on her bare feat and hands made her resemble a wild beast then a simple girl.

She kept running, but in her hurry tripped over an dead log and went crashing right into another puddle of mud.

Only now she could not move, as she gripped her middle.

The pain she'd tried to run from seizing up her body. Her heart was beating so fast and it was like a loud drum in her ear. The snarling in her head would not abate and these foreign feelings within her wouldn't subside either. All she wanted was peace and quiet and to be back at the Creek with her new family. Even Felly would be a welcome sight. Her adopted mother, Kagome, along with a few of the other adults had left on a mission nearly three days ago. They were not due to return for at least another two days or so.

She regretted running the way she had, but it was all just too much.

Everything was so loud and piercing to her senses. Her ears were ringing as everything seemed so finely tuned around her to the point of grating her nerves. She wanted to yell for everything to shut up, but only pained gasps escaped her lips. Her eyes screwing shut as she tried her very hardest to tune it all out.

'Please, somebody! Anybody please help me!'

Pained heavy rasps exited the young girl's lips. Shuddering as her toes curled inwards from the feeling of her bones breaking apart. She tried her hardest to concentrate on breathing and less on the molten lava of fire she called pain that was traveling through her body, but it was no use. There was no one to help her. No one to save her from this excruciating pain that was eating her up from the inside. When she thought for sure no one would come she felt something cool press to her face and warmth surround her.

Then her whole body seized up, everything felt like it was breaking all at once and her chest that had struggled to breath let forth a piercing scream, before everything went silent.

No insects, the rain had stopped falling, no wind just pure silence.

Then there was a thumping of a beating heart.

It grew louder and suddenly a howl tore through the silence.

Several miles away...

Kagome faltered mid-stride towards her horse, as a bone-breaking pain filtered through her chest straight to her spine. Her hand immediately reached for the pendant she worse and cursed in her native tongue. She took off towards Black, her ever faithful horse. He chuffed with how she swung up onto him with no warning, but settled soon enough.

"Kags," Kirri called out to her, slightly alarmed by the sudden difference in her friend and leader

"I'm heading back, Lincoln take over," Kagome yelled, "Hiyah," snapping the reins.

They all looked at their leader riding off as if death was licking at her feet.

"What the hell?" Kirri was shocked at Kagome's behavior.

Lincoln put a hand on his fiance's shoulder garnering her attention, "It will be alright love, have faith in her. Trust her to handle what ever is going on," he sent her a reassuring smile.

Nodding, her head she kissed his cheek.

"You're right, let's get this mission done and get home fast."

Riding towards the Creek at a breakneck pace, Kagome rode as fast as possible. Dust picked up as she plowed through the land.

Things with Layla had been difficult as of late. Terrible mood swings of bursts of anger or possessiveness. If this mission hadn't been so important she would have never left her vigil over the girl. The pendant she wore matched the one currently around Layla's neck. It was designed to alert her of any trouble or danger to the girl. And this pain that she could still coursing through the link frightened her.

'Wait for me Layla I'm coming!'

The Creek

"Hey have you seen Layla, Ms. Coraline said she had some seeds she wanted to give her," Felly asked Beth.

Beth held her son Adam on one hip and toy block in the other, shaking her head.

"No haven't seen her since earlier this morn. Mayhap she is in her garden, or hiding out in Miss Kagome's room. You know how the child gets when Miss Kagome has to leave the village for more than a few hours."

He grimaced, because he'd checked both of those places and hadn't found her. She'd been acting strange lately even more so than usual. Kagome told him to keep and eye out for her while she was away. Of course he hadn't really thought anything of it, since Kagome told him that every time she had to leave. Other than Adam, who chose to stay close to wife, he was the only other man in their little safe haven.

"Alright, well if you see her let her know Ms. Coraline's looking for her. I'm going to go see if she's hiding out in the meat shack again," he said walking away just as a droplet fell from the sky onto his cheek.

The sky had begun to darken as it started to lightly drizzle down.

Beth scampered off inside with her son and the women all around, scurried into their cabins or into the main house.

He was starting to get really worried since no one had seen her.

'Where are you Layla?'
