Sorry for the long delay but I almost gave up on this story altogether.
I was having a hard time getting it where I wanted it to go and some reviews can be very deflating. It's hard to regain your motivation after you have posted a chapter that gets bashed. Please try to remember we are amateur writers after all. Again, sorry if you are not a McSwarek fan...you have been warned.
Anyway, probably only a few more chapters to tie it all together...
"Mike O'Hare called his ex-wife and strongly recommended she develop amnesia, and quickly. Jane basically just laughed and that certainly didn't sit well with him." Sam explained as Epstein, Steve Peck and Oliver listened intently. "He told her she had no idea the power of people and that she should be careful what she shares with the Toronto Police Department. Needless to say, this only made Jane more intent on helping and she is giving us some documents tomorrow when we meet at the coffee shop again. She says she doesn't really know if it's anything helpful but clearly Mike is worried so there must be something," Sam trailed off as he leaned against Oliver's desk.
"Should we be offering her protection? I mean what if O'Hare says something to Santana?" Epstein asked concerned.
"I did already, and Jane, well she laughed. Apparently making her ex squirm has her feeling somewhat bulletproof. Of course she doesn't know anything about what we suspect the Commissioner, and maybe even Mike to be involved in. When I tried to argue with her she politely informed me she and the kids were taking a last minute holiday and they wouldn't be back for several weeks. Jane's gonna check in with us, but we won't be able to call her, apparently she's not even taking her cell phone," Sam smirked. Jane was obviously a lot smarter than Mike ever gave her credit for and that may ultimately be his undoing.
"Let's call it a day", Oliver interrupted. "You guys head home, it's been a long one and things are only going to get tougher. I'm going to fill Peck in with what we've got and we'll get back at it tomorrow." Oliver walked to the office door holding it open for Sam and Dov. "You guys have been going full speed today and you both need to go home, take some personal time to recharge. See Price, and McNally, you remember them, right? Make sure they remember too", he laughed. "We'll see you back here tomorrow."
Sam sat at the table watching as Andy moved around his kitchen cleaning up after dinner. It still felt surreal to him, her being here, them being them again after everything that had happened in the past year. He often thought about how it had all gone so horribly wrong after Jerry died. He pushed her away and didn't talk to her at a time when he probably needed her the most. And the wrong...well it just picked up speed after that and snowballed into a year of denying and pretending and well...,everything. He couldn't let that happen this time, his heart wouldn't survive losing her again. Sam needed to share all they had found out about Marlo and Santana with her, so they could deal with it and move on.
"Andy..." he spoke, almost in a whisper.
"I'm almost finished here and..."She turned from the sink and saw the worry in his eyes and it pulled at her heart, "Sam, are you ok? What's wrong?" She leaned on the kitchen counter, arms falling to her sides waiting for him to answer.
"Andy, we uh...we need to talk about some stuff that happened at the station today." He got up and crossed the kitchen to where she was standing. He leaned in and rested his palms on the counter on either side of her. "I need you to listen to me and stay calm, can you do that?"
"What is it, what's going on?" She asked as she shuffled her weight from one foot to the other nervously, but staying within the cocoon Sam was providing.
"Epstein met with Marlo today. She had called him a couple days ago to meet with her so we wired him up and well,... there some stuff that I need to tell you."
She felt a lump form in her throat and she squirmed slightly. Andy tried to remain focused on him, searching his troubled eyes. He was struggling and as much as she wanted to comfort him, she knew he needed her to let him finish.
"Santana sent her to 15 after the attempt on Moore's life. Specifically her. He obviously wanted answers to what was happening with McDonald, but he sent Marlo knowing it would make you uncomfortable Andy. He knew everything about what went on at 15. After the Ford case and all that happened, he moved her to intelligence. He is the only reason she is still on the force, and apparently the price to be paid for his help is to be his rat at intelligence. She also admitted to Epstein that she sent you into the evidence room so she could talk to me. Obviously that got messed up when I followed you..." Sam paused as he let Andy process it all.
"Andy...?"
"I just, I uh...don't know what to say. I mean, he's after me because of Duncan? Trying to ruin my career wasn't enough? He's messing with my personal life too? And Marlo, well I know I said she was trying to undermine me, but, wow. I don't even know what to say.."
"I know it's a lot to deal with, but keeping it from you, well that didn't really seem...we need to be different, we need to talk about this kind of stuff and I needed to tell you about it, all of it." Andy fell into him and he wrapped his arms around her as she dropped her head into his chest and tried to hold on to her emotions.
She pulled back suddenly and began, "no, you know what, he's not going to get me to fall apart. I'm a good cop, and God knows I tried with Duncan, heck even Duncan acknowledged that. I'm going back to work tomorrow and we're going to dig anywhere and everywhere to uncover what we need to bring him down, and it's not going to be personal." She paused and looked at him thoughtfully, "and Sam, thanks,... for telling me. I know it wasn't easy for you."
Sam wanted to argue with her. Tell her she should stay out of the investigation for the same reasons Santana went after her in the first place, but he knew she wouldn't listen, hell he wouldn't if it were him. "Partners right... no matter what," he said as he pulled her into him and softly kissed her forehead.
They lay in bed some hours later, each lost in their own thoughts and neither able to find sleep. Andy had asked question after question about the investigation and Sam had reluctantly answered all of them. She would be on desk duty till further notice and was willing to do any grunt work needed to find links between Santana, McDonald and the explosion at the station. Sam had agreed to keep her up to speed, but nothing beyond that till he met with Oliver and Steve Peck in the morning. The blurried lines between Andy the cop, and Andy the girlfriend were creeping to the surface again and Sam needed all his resolve to keep them in check.
Oliver looked over the papers Sam had displayed on his desk with a scotch and water mixture of shock and confusion. Cancelled cheques, a couple of bank statements and hard copies of several emails between an akelly and an info contact for a numbered corporation. Apparently Mike O'Hare had been storing these files for Santana for several years prior to his divorce. Jane never really knew what they were, but had found them when she was searching through her ex's office trying to uncover evidence of his affairs. She copied them anyway and had been keeping them in a safety deposit box. One thing was for certain, the signature on the cheques belonged to Santana. The problem was, none of the cheques were written to anyone involved at city hall, or Kelly Construction. They were all sure there was a link to be found, it just wasn't clearly defined amongst the papers Jane had given them. It did however, give them more directions to take to fill in the pieces to this ever increasing puzzle.
Steve Peck was quietly calling in a favour at Internal Affairs. He had dealings with an IA officer a couple years back and knew she would be more than willing to aid them in efforts to bring Santana down. There was no love lost between Taylor and the Commissioner, and she had access to more data files than 15 could ever hope to get their hands on. He had managed to catch her on her day off and she had agreed to meet with him, Sam and Oliver. McNally was told to find them the minute Taylor showed up.
"Hey, I heard you were back today. How are you doing?"
Andy turned away from the desk and spotted Nick walking towards her. "I'm good actually. Glad to be back at work, even if it is desk duty. I swear if I had to spend another day watching daytime TV I might have blown myself up."
"Uh that's not even..., " Nick tried to spit out.
"You're right, that was really bad. I was just so anxious to get back to work. And I really was going out of my mind," Andy said, somewhat apologetically. "Since you're here, would you mind watching the desk for a minute so I can get a juice from the machine?"
"I'm going back there for myself anyway, apple or orange?" Nick asked as he turned and headed in the direction of the lunchroom and vending machines.
"Apple," she said, as she turned back to the mess of files on her desk. Clearly Oliver had been saving this stuff to keep her chained to this desk for the foreseeable future and, she suspected, Sam had probably encouraged him to do exactly that.
"Excuse me. I'm looking for Detective Peck, I'm Office Taylor, IA."
Andy looked up from the file to see a pretty young woman carrying a bike helmet and a casual smile. She wasn't at all what Andy expected when Steve told her he was expecting someone for IA.
"I'm Officer McNally,.. Andy," she said as she extended her hand. "Let me just page him for you. You can take a seat over there if you like."
"Thanks", she replied.
"Andy you are going to have to suffer with orange there was no...", Nick stopped, stunned as he saw the woman waiting at reception.
"Juliet...what...what are you doing here?"
A/N I know they never actually told us what Juliet's last name was in Season 5 but I have used Taylor. She had to have a last name after all to be in my story. LOL
