Chapter 3

"Holy crap it's been a long hiatus...anyway I bet you guys have been wondering: "What we've been doing?" since this mediocre writer put us on the back burner for a frick-tonne of months. Well I'll tell you: he's been writing Batman fanfiction! Quite good, not great, but getting there. Anyway...since the hiatus this guy's been getting better. If you want to read what he's got up his sleeve with us carry on reading...oh but you may want to give yourself a refresher on our lot; granted it's been in: Development Hell since October time." Fade spoke breaking the fourth wall to the audience.

It's been about a month since the incident involving Nesmith, Ben and Jennifer having a lover's romance and quarrels from time to time…in fact there's one going on right now:

"So you're saying that I'm a horrible actress? Is that it?" Jennifer screamed

"No, you're not a horrible actress. I said these are horrible screenplays; that doesn't mean you're a…!" Ben retaliated

"Well it matters to me! This is my life Ben! You think I'm not good enough!" Jennifer answered holding back tears

"How can you say that? Jennifer you're the most beautiful woman I've ever dated! If anything; I'm not good enough for you! Fade even read the screenplay and he's said that it doesn't do you justice either! Right Fade?" Ben answered then looked at me

"Dude, don't drag me into this! But seeing as you've put me in the spotlight…" I said getting up from my comfy position "Jennifer, this screenplay: reads like every generic piece of claptrap I've read! Your character is a vampire who's been promised to another, but gets a werewolf falling for her then there's this crazy crap about a hunter of all monsters…what? This sounds like that vampire flick that barely passed its budget marks! Your character is deep but the rest of the cast is paper thin! I've got memoirs and made up stories that are more engaging than this!" I said waving then throwing the screenplay flat on the table. "And as for Ben saying he's not good enough for you…that's something I've got no control over. Jennifer he's concerned that you're making yourself a generic actress, always appearing in one genre: Vamp-Drama-Rom films. By this time how many vampire films have you made? Too many; that's how much! And quite frankly, I think you're selling yourself short being in this rut!" I said putting my foot on the end of it.

Jennifer looked at me then Ben; she went to give him a hug as I sighed leaving the two alone.

"Fade…you're right. It's a horrible script, but what can I do? I just can't say no…there's only a limited time before the next films are being produced and they've asked other actors and actresses and they've said they're all busy." Jennifer said looking at me

"They probably read the script beforehand and realised how crap it is…look is there any movie lots not being used?" I said

"Why are you asking about that?" Ben asked

"Because we're going to make a movie!" I grinned "But first you two need to calm down a bit. I'll leave you two, to think it over." As I left through the door.

Hours passed and I was reading, Frankenstein: the Modern Prometheus. Defiantly a good read. I know where Ben got Franken-Strike from…Me I prefer Adam-Volt. As I was reaching the last sentence Ben and Jennifer exited the room looking a bit tumbled.

"You two look like you've had a productive time discussing things." I said with a sarcastic tone in my voice. Looking at the two, their clothes were ruffled and both their hairs were messes. The two looked embarrassed but held each other's hands either way.

"We've worked out some things." Ben said rubbing his head with his free hand

"So…what is this film we're going to make?" Jennifer asked inquisitively.

I grinned and said "It's not a film…it's three!"

Later in the day I got out the three scripts I made during my time alone…I had a lot of free time.

"Whoa…you wrote these? These are…graphic!" Ben said being amazed

"Yeah; I had a lot of time. So which one are we doing first? The Monster flick, the Samurai or my personal favourite the Noir?" I said pointing at the respective scripts

Later Jennifer got a call from her agent asking about the new script Jennifer told her what she thought. "No. I'm not doing it! I'm working on my own films; with new scripts, a new director and new crew! So you can take this garbage you call another Oscar and shove it!" she said pressing the end call button. Ben and I clapped in congratulations, "That felt good." She said going through her hair.

Ben leant in and kissed her "I'm proud of you Jen." Making her blush.

*A few days later*

We arrived on set, we had chosen to do the Noir film first for a few reasons: One) it was Jennifer's first role as a serious character. Two) there were clothes from previous era based films and three) black and white films were cheaper than colour!

As we met the rest of the cast and got each other acquainted with each other we got to work. Each costume and makeup was tailored to that era; right down to the hairstyles.

During the first few weeks within the eight month release of a new film Jennifer was becoming more like her character; Barbara Artois, the secretary of Private Investigator Henry Wiles: growing in confidence, intuitive , cunning and tempting. But she was having problems with how her character should react when she finds her boss, Henry Wiles dead in the alley, burned to death.

"Well…imagine if it was Ben that'd died." I answered truthfully; she looked at her boyfriend over by the tech support helping to make sure the equipment was working properly as Grey Matter, Brainstorm and Upgrade.

She began to imagine it then asked to do the scene…she mastered it right there.

The months passed and we got the film into editing and in post-production: adding the music and final touches it was coming together. But I was feeling that this was going to well…if there is one Universal truth to anything is this: Sod's Law. Definition: if anything is going too well at any extended period of time there will always be something to screw you over. As the last touches were completed we left for home, the crew went to their respective lives and Ben and Jennifer went on a small date, they hadn't done anything since the film was being made. I had some other stuff to do back at the Plumbers base to make sure there were no other irregularities during this. I was relieved: Albedo was in the Null Void, Vilgax was quiet and Nesmith was still locked up.

"Great, maybe this'll go off without a hitch." I exhaled

The week of viewing and at the editing studio there was hustle and bustle: someone had broken in and stole all the footage! Raw and Edited! All that hard work was gone; whoever did this was clever and methodical. They left no prints or trace, clever bastards.

"What are we going to do? All that work and we've nothing to show at The Opening!" Jennifer said biting her thumb nail.

"Jen, it'll be alright. There's got to be some clues somewhere…right Fade?" Ben asked me trying to calm her down.

"There are no clues Ben…whoever did this they were smart, methodical, practical and patient. I just spoke to the police and whoever did this was a pro." I said while looking out of the window.

"So my career is ruined…" Jennifer sobbed "this is my entire fault."

"Don't say that Jen. It's not ruined, we'll explain the situation. I'm sure they'll understand." Ben tried to put a positive spin on things

"Don't worry about it. We've got an ace up our sleeves…or more precisely: my sleeve!" I said pulling out a hard-drive pen.

"What's that?" Jennifer said rubbing her tears away.

"Our completed film. I've lived long enough to know when the writer upstairs is screwing us over." I said indicating the writer

"So…so…" Jennifer gasped

"We've got to put our Sunday best!" I grinned slipping the drive back in my sleeve.

*At the Opening, people standing behind the ropes with photographers and news reporters*

Ben, Jennifer and I took a limousine to the Opening in our best. Jennifer: a ruby red sleeveless dress with a blue rose in her hair and high heel shoes; Ben: a smart tuxedo with a bow tie, green cufflinks and shiny polished black leather shoes. But I was dressed as something I'd never wear again: my Victorian Era suit: Pressed white gloves and shirt, ebony black trousers, jacket and shoes and a black top hat and willow cane.

As we approached the screening we were nervous, as expected but also excited to see what they would think. As we exited the car, the shutter of camera flashes surrounded us, as professional as we could be we waved and nodded to each person and signed autographs.

As we approached the main gates, Jennifer saw her old Agent. Being a professional she greeted him and was told since she dropped out of the Vampire flick they found someone more appealing, hoping to bring some more character to the film. Ben intervened and defended her honour:

"Jennifer has plenty of character, Sir. And you better be more grateful for what you had. Come on Jen." Ben said escorting her to the screening.

"You seem over confident…anything you want to say?" I inquired.

"Just to say sorry to hear about your plundered film." He said seeming to hold back a smile. "Still it seems to be good showmanship you turning up."

"Oh didn't you hear? We had a backup copy." I rebutted with his seeming grin disappearing in shock "Good luck." I said going inside.

The hours whittled away to tomorrow. Ben and Jennifer were sleep in his home on the settee, I was pondering and knew: The Agent committed the burglary, probably using hiring an experienced cat-burglar. But there was no evidence pointing it to him…this was going to get interesting.

As morning came Ben and Jennifer woke up to the smell of Pancakes Ben's mother prepared for them grinning, partly for knowing a famous movie star and partly because of the surprise in store.

"What surprise?" they asked and as I turned up I held the paper then read it aloud.

"Well Sumo Slammers IV: Ishiyama's Vengeance got a: Fifty Four percent approval rating, not as good as its predecessor but still watchable. Ninja V Samurai: Resurrection got: Sixty One percent rating saying while the eternal struggle continues…get some new material." I rolled my eyes at that bit. "Curse of Lust and Love…that's the Vampire flick you turned down Jennifer. Has an approval rating of Eighty Seven percent saying: the reboot of the Vampire series is at a critical point in media it has shown a new face, Lillian Mosely, as more approachable as a character, with more: fire, charismatics and charm than her predecessor Jennifer Nocturne." I looked at Jennifer and she looked shot down.

"Eighty Seven percent…?" Jennifer said gasping Ben hugged her to remind her she wasn't alone.

"What about us? What did we get?" Ben asked

I looked at the review and made a disappointed face "The Noir Detective film: The Hourglass has an approval rating of…Ninety Seven percent!" with that I smiled and Ben and Jennifer whooped, jumped and hugged each other.

"I think they've heard the news." Carl said (Ben's Dad) to Sandra (Ben's Mum) while she was dancing with her husband.

"What else? What does it say?" Jennifer asked

"The sight of Jennifer Nocturne making an appearance as the protagonist in a non-vampire film is both: refreshing and new. The coming of age actor has shown she can be a positive role model for women in any situation, by using her: ingenuity, cunning and intelligence. The twist ending of the villain was surprising to say the least; Jennifer Nocturne has proven that her acting skills are not dead and staked through the heart like her previous films; they are flourishing and provocative. If Jennifer Nocturne can find the missing three percent from this film she'll be the next greatest detective since Batman!" I said grinning then taking the clip from a spare paper I already bought.

"It does not say that last part!" Ben said

"Yes it does: last sentence on the review." I said calmly pointing at the paper.

"*mumble, mumble, mumble* Three percent…*mumble, mumble* Batman…huh. Guess it does say that!" Ben said looking at me, before Jennifer kissed him.

The phone rang and on the other end was Kevin and Gwen (this phone had a multiple person talk function, for some reason) excited.
