Regulus Black

Regulus sighs tiredly as he looks at the sleeping house-elf. He's fought Kreacher for ages to get the house-elf to sleep in his bed. He could have made it an order, but Regulus remembers his last orders to Kreacher and can't bring himself to issue another one. He only won the argument because Kreacher was in too much pain to fight the requests.

Kreacher looks even smaller as he sleeps in the large bed, and Regulus feels guilty. He's the one that ordered Kreacher to do what the Dark Lord told him. Had he not offered Kreacher's services, his companion wouldn't be in this state now.

Regulus can't bring himself to stand up and clear away the empty potion bottles. He wants to stay there, sitting on the end of the bed, watching over Kreacher because Kreacher has always looked after him. It's time to step up and take responsibility.

Kreacher has never had expectations of Regulus. He's never made demands. Everyone else has, except his house-elf. His parents want him to believe as they do, follow in their footsteps, keep their blood 'noble'. Sirius wants Regulus to rebel like he has, run away, turn his back on the rest of his family. As far back as he can remember, there's been expectations, orders. Professors, friends, the Dark Lord. Kreacher, on the other hand, just accepts him for who he is, not for what the future holds for him.

But Regulus has failed him. He knew that something dangerous would happen. He knew Kreacher would get hurt, but still he made a choice - the wrong choice - and allowed Kreacher to go through that.

Kreacher trusted Regulus to keep him safe and Regulus betrayed that trust. But he won't make that mistake again. He's going to help Kreacher heal from his ordeal, he's going to find out what exactly happened, and he's finally going to make a stand and he'll redeem himself to the one person who truly knows him.

He's going to do what he believes in, not what is expected by anyone else, and he's going to do it for himself and for Kreacher.

He sits at the end of the bed, casting spells to monitor Kreacher's condition as he tries to make a plan.
