"Why did Mom marry you?"

"What brought this on, love?"

"The girls at school say she never would have chosen you if you didn't do anything bad to her. You were just the driver they said."

"Don't listen to what those girls or anyone else says. We did nothing bad. And to answer your question: to be honest I still don't know why Mom married me. I'm sure she knew a lot more boys who were richer or more good-looking than me. Only Mom can give you the answers you want. If only she was still here."

"I am still here."

"Sybil! I thought you were on the early shift."

"I am. The clock's ten minutes behind. I'll have it fixed later. And Sybbie, to answer your question: I chose Dad because I knew one thing that will always be true."

"What is that, Mom?"

"That he loves me no matter what. I've shown him my good and bad sides. He's shown me his good and bad sides. And yet we love each other in spite of everything. And even though we don't have the riches that your aunties and cousins have because I married Dad, you two have made me happier and given me so much joy than I could ever deserve."
