"I told you I would do that?" Will said just after getting back from the store. JJ was hanging decorations up for Henry's 6th birthday party that afternoon. They had decided to have the party here because they had just finished unpacking everything and, though they had been living in the house for a month, they wanted to have people over to see their new home, plus it was cheaper than renting out a space.
"I know, but you weren't here and it needed to be done. And it's not like I couldn't do it," JJ said taking Will's hand to steady herself before stepping down from the ladder. "Did you get everything?" She asked, Will had gone to get the few last supplies needed for the party.
"I did," he answered as he started to go through the bag in his hand. "Tylenol," he said passing her the container. "How you feeling?"
"Exhausted, I really just want to go back to bed, and this headache won't go away," she answered as they headed to the kitchen. JJ had been working on Henry's party for a few weeks now, and although she knew how difficult it was to plan any date so far in the future, she had promised Henry that even if she had to go away Will would be there and they would celebrate just the three of them when she returned. Thankfully no cases arose for the weekend.
"Well that's why I'm here to help," Will said as he stopped JJ in the hallway. "You might have done this all before, but this is my first time, so you got to let me do everything I can, and make a big deal out of anything."
"Okay," she smiled lovingly in defeat. JJ knew Will was excited, but this was damn near adorable. They slowly kissed before walking into the kitchen.
"You know I have no idea what I'm doing, right?" Emily said seeing the couple walk into the kitchen. Emily had offered to help, she just didn't know that meant preparing food, and she was definitely not a chef. Standing beside her was Henry, though he wasn't much of a chef either, he much prefered stealing ingredients while Emily wasn't looking.
"It's okay," JJ laughed before taking a glass out of the cupboard and filled it with water before opening the container of Tylenol.
"Are you feeling okay?" Emily asked surprised to see the painkillers in her friend's hand.
"What? Yeah I'm fine. Just a little headache," JJ answered quickly. Emily looked her over trying to detect a lie.
"Oi," Will said catching Henry placing a piece of chocolate into his mouth. Henry looked up nervously knowing he had been caught. He was scared until he saw his father cracked a smile and take some chocolate as well.
"That's for decorating the cake," JJ said once she saw what her son and boyfriend were doing.
"Sorry," Henry apologised.
"Yeah sorry," Will said with a cheeky grin plastered across his face.
"How about you two go finish up in the other room," JJ instructed.
"Come on Hen," Will said crouching down for Henry to climb up on to his back. "Call us if you need help," Will said standing back up and taking two more pieces of chocolate, and handing one up to Henry. Both giggled at the faux scowl JJ was giving them and they turned to leave the kitchen.
...
At twelve the party guests started to arrive, Henry had invited ten other children from his class. JJ and Emily stood by the front door waiting to greet everyone as they came in. Will was in the back room with some of the other parents, they watched as their kids screamed in joy when they saw another one of their friends outside of school. Even from the other room JJ could hear the cries of excitement and knew her headache wouldn't be leaving any time soon.
"Hey," JJ said happily seeing Hotch and Rossi coming up to the house, Jack had been invited to. Henry and Jack had a BAU parent bond, even with the age difference they were good friends.
"You have a beautiful house, Carina," Rossi said placing a peck on each of JJ's cheeks.
"Thank you. It's not the Rossi mansion, but we love it. I'll give everyone a tour later," she replied.
...
Once everyone arrived, the kids had been left to games, some parents joined in. Some mothers had formed a group and were sitting and gossiping. JJ had never been close to Henry's friend's mothers, mostly because she worked full time, but also because she got the feeling like they looked down at her because of it. She might have made more of an effort with them today if her own friends weren't there.
"No, she never told him about Henry," JJ heard as she walked passed the living room, where the mom's were located.
"Then how did he find out?" Someone else asked.
"I don't know, but I bet it was a shock when he did," the first mom added. JJ just laughed and rolled her eyes as she walked away, let them think and say what they wanted, it didn't matter.
JJ stood by the food table, a handful of popcorn at her mouth as she watched the kids and Will run around the living room. She smiled seeing both of her boys faces happily playing. She stuffed the popcorn into her mouth before grabbing another handful and walking back over to the team.
"Woah, next time bring the bowl," Emily joked and JJ sat down.
"So, should we be saving a date anytime soon?" Penelope asked and JJ choked on the piece of popcorn she'd just put in her mouth.
"Why?" JJ asked confused as she looked around the group.
"A Wedding?" The technical analysis singsonged.
"Oh," JJ let out realising what her friend was going on about. "No," she answered shaking her head. "We've talked about it, but no, we're not there yet. One step at a time."
"A step at a time?" Emily laughed out. "You've jumped a thousand steps."
"Yeah, Rossi would have been married and divorced by now," Morgan joked.
"Hey," Rossi feigned hurt.
"Well if anything, we're engaged to be engaged," JJ said a little unsure if that was the best description, but it did fit.
"So no wedding?" Penelope asked deflated.
"I'm sure they'll be a wedding one day, but that's so far in the future, we're just focusing on what's happening now," JJ explained.
"What's happening now?" Hotch asked.
"You know, just settling into the house," she covered.
...
"Hey," Will smiled seeing JJ walk into the fun zone. Putting his arm out JJ slipped into a side hug.
"You look like you're having fun?" JJ said.
"I am," he breathed heavily, it was nice to catch his breath, keeping up with these kids was a lot work.
"Cake time?" JJ asked as she whispered in his ear so the kids wouldn't hear. Will nodded in response.
"Hey!" Will called out, and all the kids stopped. "Who wants cake?"
"Me!" The twelve kids screamed out in unison.
...
Bringing the cake out, candles lit, Will placed it in front of the birthday boy. Everyone started singing 'Happy Birthday' as the flames flickered. Emily had offered to take photos so the two parents could enjoy the moment. Will came to stand behind JJ, turning to look at him, they quickly kissed, before looking back to their son. Hugging JJ from behind they watched as Henry blew out the six candles. Who would have thought this was where they would be the last time Henry blew out his birthday candles? Everybody cheered and started clapping while Will's hands slid down to JJ's small hidden bump.
I hope you enjoyed this.
