Never knew I could feel like this
Like I have never seen the sky before
I want to vanish inside your kiss
Every day I love you more and more
Listen to my heart, can you hear it sings
Telling me to give you everything
Seasons may change, winter to spring
But I love you until the end of time
Come what may
Come What May – OST Moulin Rouge
Moving me to a new school was a bit of a drastic measure, but I loved my parents. I knew they'd do anything for me and my wellbeing; even when that meant uprooting me before junior year from the only high school I knew. Good or bad, with nice or evil people, it was a place I knew.
Now I had to get used to a new school, new people, new everything.
Same me, though.
I never blended in, and integrating myself in a new school was going to be tough.
But then I saw him.
He sat next to a pretty enough girl in the cafeteria, always by her side. It was clear they were a couple, even though I never saw them holding hands or kissing.
He was so damn beautiful, and when I learned his name—Edward—it showed how special and unique he was.
It took me a while to get the nerve to ask Bella, his friend, about him. Thankfully, she cemented the rumors that they weren't together. I'd seen her eyeing the football players too much. No one in their right mind would look at anyone else when they had perfection next to them.
Edward was perfect.
Truly glorious.
Everything about him attracted me, from his unruly, brown hair tinged with flashes of bronze, vibrant green eyes masked by a pair of thick glasses, a crooked nose, and the softest looking lips I'd seen in my whole life.
He was my dirty little secret. I admired him from afar, knowing I'd never be good enough for him.
Until one day, in English class when he talked to me for the first time.
He wanted to borrow a pen.
I nearly died at the shock of him talking to me, acknowledging my existence. And he wasn't just a pretty face. He knew good music.
"Hey, do you have a spare pen?"
I was sure Edward wasn't talking to me, but when I caught his eye, and he smiled, my heart burst out of my chest. "You're talking to me?"
Fuck, I am such an idiot!
An amused look crossed his face. He definitely thought I was some bumbling idiot.
"Yeah. Do you?"
"Uh, yeah." I grabbed a pen from my desk. I always had two prepared. "I hope you don't mind it's black."
"Nah. Anything will be good. You see, my friend, Bella, she loves to steal my pens."
I still couldn't believe they weren't together.
I'd seen them interacting plenty of times, and there was definitely some sort of tension between them.
"Maybe she likes you. Girls do silly shit to get a guy's attention." I had no idea why I was trying to make him see his best friend might like him more than a friend.
He shook his head vehemently. "Oh, no. That's impossible."
"You'll never know," I insisted. "Especially if you're friends."
"Exactly. It will never work, besides I'm not interested."
Of course, he wasn't.
I remembered Nick, he was my best friend since we were little, then one day he learned I liked dick and stopped being my friend. It was an accident he found out, but I guessed it was better than having my hopes raised then crushed. I'd always liked him, but of course, no one can force anyone to love them back.
"She seems like a nice girl," I added after a while, unable to stop talking to him. Even if I was trying to hook him up with his best friend, he was talking to me.
"She is." Edward grinned, showing me his pearly whites. "Maybe you can join us for lunch. I've noticed you eat alone."
"You did?" I couldn't believe he'd been watching me. He paid attention.
Edward was aware of my existence.
I could fly.
"Don't worry. You're welcome to join the Loner's Club." He joked on a slightly nervous tone.
"Like The Beatles song?"
"Close enough. I just said that…but yeah, like Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."
"I'd like it—to join you. Are you sure your friend won't mind?"
"Positive."
And so I couldn't wait until lunch period. It couldn't come fast enough.
To make me think I was going to lose the opportunity to sit at the table with him, my need to use the restroom was ridiculous. I never hated the need to piss more than at the moment. It felt like it took me hours, not mere seconds.
In the cafeteria, I spotted Edward sitting with Bella at their usual table.
Channeling my braver inner self, I got my food and strolled to their table, placing my tray on top of it.
Edward's narrowed eyes shot to me sharply, then he mellowed when he noticed it was me. It appeared he'd forgotten about inviting me over, and I was intruding.
"Does your offer still stand, Edward?" I could feel my face burning in embarrassment.
"Yeah. Sorry. Sit down." He waved me to sit down. "Bella, you know Alec, right? He's having lunch with us, if that's okay?"
Poor Bella seemed in shock, but nodded with a smile.
The first few minutes were embarrassing as hell, but then Edward managed to spray himself with soda. That broke the tension all right.
I didn't want to ignore Bella, but Edward was truly captivating, and besides it was him I was interested in. So I mostly talked to him about whatever subject came up. I was distinctly aware Bella was looking between us like a hawk. Being a girl, she probably realized I was so into Edward it wasn't even funny.
I never could hide my emotions.
Thankfully, she wasn't upset I was drooling over her best friend. He seemed blissfully unaware of my attraction—like any decent straight guy.
What is it with me and finding straight guys attractive, when it's clear they'll never be mine.
oOo
The next morning, there were rumors everywhere that Edward was a fag and had been making-out with some guy in the parking lot. Of course, by the time I reached English class, the one class I shared with Edward, some were even saying they groped or even were about to fuck.
I wondered if Edward knew what was being said about him.
I found Edward sitting in his usual seat, shoulders slumped, looking defeated. If the rumors were true, about him being gay, I stood a chance. Maybe.
I sat next to him, and he shot me a curious look.
"Hi. Everything okay?" I bit my lip, watching him, worried. I didn't want him to know I knew, but I had to make sure he was okay.
"Hi. Yeah." He cringed visibly when Emmett stepped into class. Then he shrunk under the desk, as if wanting to disappear.
It was true.
I knew in that moment for certain.
Emmett was a bully and he'd been mean to Edward.
He came over to Edward's desk, leaning over it, looking between us. I was determined to stand up for Edward if the situation called for it. I wasn't going to hide who I was. It didn't matter if others didn't like it, I was gay and didn't give a shit about what they thought.
"Two fags sitting in a tree…butt fucking." Emmett sneered.
Edward's fist clenched under the table, but he didn't do or say anything.
"You're a fucking disgrace, Cullen!" Emmett kept talking, making me want to punch him.
Couldn't he tell he'd done enough damage?
"Fuck off," Edward mumbled.
"What was that, fag?" Emmett snapped.
"He said fuck off. So get lost already!" I intervened. "Leave him alone." If he couldn't or wouldn't stand up for himself, I would. He deserved it. Edward was better than having someone like Emmett step all over him.
"Oh, isn't this nice? Are you his lawyer?" Emmett's eyes flashed my way. I tried not to shrink back. I had to be courageous for Edward. "Does your boyfriend know about your high school affair?" He pointed to me, sneering.
So Edward did have a boyfriend. It didn't matter. I still wanted to be his friend, now more than ever. We had to stick together.
"Just leave," Edward mumbled, clearly angry, but afraid to start a fight.
"Pussy." Emmett turned and left.
"You shouldn't have done that. Now he'll hate you, too," Edward whispered, catching my eye.
"He insulted me too with those accusations."
"Which I'm sorry for. You probably want to stay away from the queer, too."
I tried not to laugh. He didn't get it. "Uh, no. I'd rather stick to you. We can make a team against him, and his type." I leaned closer. "I'm gay, too."
A small smile appeared on his face, making my heart stutter.
"Well, in that case… I'm still sorry I dragged you into this."
From the moment it was out in the open, it felt like we were closer, or maybe that was my imagination.
We went together to the cafeteria and sat together.
Edward had a bagel packed and that was what he ate, while I got a soda and had my sandwich Mom had packed for me.
"Does anyone know? Your family?" He was interested in me.
"Only my family. They're cool with it. Maybe too cool in Mom's case." I chuckled, trying not to cringe. She was too supportive sometimes.
"Oh, must be nice, though."
"I take it you're not out."
"Apparently, I am…forcibly shoved out the closet and thrust into the wolves' mouths."
I felt so bad for him. No one should go through something so awful. Like my mom always says, when the person is ready, they'll come out and shine.
Bella appeared at our table, dumping her tray on top of it, and falling in the seat next to Edward. I hadn't seen her so angry in all the time I knew her.
"If one more person asks whether or not I know if the guy I used to hang around is a fag, I'm going for the jugular."
"I wish I took your advice from the beginning of the year, and pretended we were a couple," Edward admitted in a small voice.
"They'd have seen you with Jasper sooner or later." She rolled her eyes. "Oh, hey, Alec." She finally noticed me. She shot me a small smile, before turning back to Edward. "Speaking of Jasper, what was up with him this morning?"
"You saw us?"
"Honey, everyone saw you. By the way, Jasper bringing your forgotten lunch was the cutest thing ever!"
Edward turned an unhealthy shade of red. "It was my breakfast, actually. Anyway…he has some problems."
I tried to keep my emotions in check, but it was hard when it was abundantly clear Edward was off the market. He seemed really into this Jasper.
When he spoke his name, his whole face lit up and his demeanor changed—his voice softened, his smile grew, his eyes shone— like he was talking about the best thing in the world.
I recognized all that as love, because I felt the same about him.
In that moment I knew I was head over heels in love with Edward Cullen, and I didn't stand a chance.
