Sniper knocked on the door.
"You in there?"
No answer.
"Mate?"
Nothing.
"Scout?"
Sniper grit his teeth and slammed his weight against the door. The frail lock snapped and he slipped inside, shutting the door behind him. The room was dark, no lights to keep the shadows at bay. Sniper quickly flipped the switch on and the darkness retreated.
Scout sat against the wall with his knees pulled to his chest and arms holding them close. His breath hitched when he saw Sniper and he quickly ducked his head as Silent sobs racked his body.
"It's alright Scout. I'm here," Sniper called the words softly, hoping he said the right thing.
Looked like he did. Scout lifted his tear-stained face and stared at the Australian. Sniper walked slowly to Scout. He had enough experience with animals to know that you do not corner a frightened one, no matter the size or age. And Scout wasn't much different than a pup in this situation.
Sniper reached Scout and settled down next to him. It only took a moment before the younger male attached himself to the other. Sniper fought his instincts to fight and flee and instead wrapped his arms around the boy. The Bostonian was crying into Sniper's vest and muttering apologies.
"It's fine," Sniper assured and patted his back. "It's all gonna be fine."
