Taming the Skylark (A Katekyo Hitman Reborn fanfiction)
Standard disclaimers apply. I do not own Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Amano Akira-sensei does; though, of course, the OCs are mine.
Ciaossu! To give the readers an overview, this fanfiction is set in the post-canon timeline. Tsuna and the rest of the gang (except for Ryohei) had just graduated from middle school and will be entering the high school division where a new set of officers exists. Hibari Kyoya will no longer be the chairman of the Disciplinary Committee, though I highly doubt it would remain that way for long. ...Yikes!
A girl dutifully stood in front of Namimori High's monument with arms crossed below her chest. An amused chuckle escaped her lips as she observed the students passing through the gates.
The sight of seemingly pure and innocent lambs (freshmen in layman's term) was enough to provide her bliss. After all, she was Senritsu Nanami, the student council president and head disciplinary officer whose responsibilities were mostly focused on the less obedient ones. It was only natural for her to find the fresh middle school graduates charming, since they were on the bottom of the chain, easy to dominate.
However, little did she know that a wolf had hidden itself among the herd of sheep.
...
An hour had passed and most of the students were already inside the auditorium for their Entrance Ceremony. The schoolgrounds had become empty and Nanami was alone at the entrance, humming a tune to pass time. She decided to stay behind in case there were latecomers; and, as if to reward her perseverance, two male students dashed past the school gates.
"Are you alright, Tenth?!"
A shout took her out of her reverie. She slightly leaned forward to observe the newcomers and her eyebrows instantly furrowed.
One of them had caught her attention: the boy with silver hair. Ah, that color practically screamed violation!
She walked towards them and noticed that the smaller boy remained out of breath while the silver-haired one patted his back to ease his fatigue. Upon a closer look, the latter male had emerald eyes. Maybe he really was a foreigner and that was his real hair color? She decided to investigate at another time.
"Being late on the first day of classes is not a good start, you know," she commented, and the boys turned to her in surprise.
"Huh, who are you?!" The silverhead protectively raised an arm over his companion. Nanami arched an eyebrow at his peculiar reaction while the other boy dragged him away with a flustered expression.
She heard him whisper worriedly, "Gokudera-kun, what are you doing?!"
"But, Tenth, this woman looks dangerous!"
"She looks like a student," he hissed with profound disbelief.
"That red armband—!" The boy named Gokudera shot Nanami a nasty look. "Only dangerous people wear that!"
The shorter male tousled his brown hair in exasperation. "Geez! That only means she's from the student council, Gokudera-kun!" he groaned. "In a normal school setting, they protect the students. This is different from Hibari-san's disciplinary committee!"
Nanami watched them with worry. "Are you two alright?" Did they hit their heads or something? She could not help but wonder.
The silver-haired boy hissed at her like an angry cat while his friend pulled his arm in warning and bowed apologetically at her. "Yes, sorry! We just had a slight misunderstanding."
Her confusion remained, but she decided to let go of the issue. Nanami took two brochures from her bag and handed it to them.
"The auditorium's this way," she pointed at the map. "You'll proceed to your respective classrooms right after the ceremony. Be sure to check the bulletin board for the class list, okay?"
"Yes, thank you—" the shorter boy paused, unsure of what to address her. His eyes returned to the armband that his friend had unjustly harassed. "—senpai."
Nanami cracked a smile. She had just moved up a grade and was not used to being called a senior. With a satisfied grin, she gave them a nod and happily hopped back to her post.
The brown-haired boy sighed in relief and looked at his friend. "Shouldn't we hurry? You're the representative who has to give a speech."
At his words, Nanami almost tripped on her own feet. Gokudera just scoffed. "No need, Tenth! Let's take our time and rest. You were just out of breath earli—"
"You."
In a blink of an eye, she was already behind them with her hands on the collars of their shirts. Without saying another word, she dragged them to the auditorium.
The three reached their destination in no time. Gokudera slapped her hand away as soon as he regained his footing.
"What do you think you're doing, woman?!"
Meanwhile, the shorter male staggered in his delirious state. "People with armbands really might be dangerous," he muttered with dizzy eyes.
Nanami felt guilty just by watching the brunette. Maybe she should not had tagged him along?
"Sorry. You would have taken your time if I didn't drag you, and someone's obviously not the type who listens to what other people say." Nanami eyed Gokudera. He opened his mouth to protest, but she immediately cut him off. "Your speech is about to start in a few minutes, you can't waste your time here. Tell me your names. I'll check the sections for you."
The silver-haired male harrumphed like a child. "No way I'll say mine!"
"I already know yours. Gokudera, right?"
Gokudera's jaw dropped in utter defeat. Of course, she must had heard it from his boss! She then glanced at the other boy. "And you?"
He screeched and bowed repeatedly at her. "I-I'm Sawada Tsunayoshi! I'll be in your care so please don't hurt me!"
Drops of sweat trickled down her temples. The boy obviously had anxiety issues and she had unknowingly made it worse! She gave him an apologetic smile. "I won't. I'm so sorry for scaring you, Sawada."
Nanami then watched the two enter the auditorium before heading to the bulletin board. She sighed in exasperation.
"What a strange duo."
Students were already vacating the hall when a voice echoed through the intercom, telling Sawada Tsunayoshi and Gokudera Hayato to proceed to the stage. The announcement repeated for at least two more times before it ended.
After expressing her gratitude to the responsible committee member, Nanami decided to wait for her underclassmen at the backstage. A familiar nagging voice soon caught her attention.
She looked up from the papers in her hands. "Oh, you're here."
"Couldn't you have called us in a less extravagant manner? The Tenth is embarrassed!" Gokudera angrily pointed at her while his left arm hovered before Tsuna.
Nanami silently watched him in wonder, comparing his actions to that of a kindergartner who liked to throw tantrums.
She shifted her gaze back to the papers. "Anyway, I checked the bulletin board and—"
"Hey!"
"—the section you and Sawada are assigned to is—"
"Stop ignoring me!" Gokudera stomped his feet. He had been itching to blast the woman to tomorrow. She kept on dismissing him and it was starting to get on his nerves!
Nanami sighed. Her patience was running low as well. He wanted attention? Oh, she was more than glad to give him some!
She sneered, "If we will be talking about extravagance, your English speech definitely takes the trophy home, Gokudera-kun."
In an instant, Gokudera's face flushed the deepest shade of red. He remembered the bewildered expressions the audience had as he delivered his speech in perfect English. He didn't mind it that much, though. His goal was to make the Tenth proud! However, it turned out that his boss also failed to comprehend a single thing that he said. How heartbreaking!
"You will be in the school's newspaper by the end of the month, that I assure you," added Nanami with a mischievous grin.
"Why you—!" Gokudera snapped and his hands immediately reached for the dynamite in his pockets. However, before he could destroy the auditorium, his boss held him back.
"Stop!" Tsuna was already on the verge of tears. It was only their first day, but his friend almost wreaked havoc in school. He was so anxious, he wanted to go home!
Nanami, beyond pleased and satisfied with her teasing, decided that she had enough. She cleared her throat. "As I was saying, I already saw the class list."
Her statement caught their attention.
"You're both in Class 1-B. It's at the North building."
Tsuna blinked. "You mean—"
Gokudera's mood did an instant 180. He shook Tsuna's shoulders and cheered, "We're both in the same class, Tenth!"
Nanami was surprised. Gokudera was grinning like a child. He looked so innocent, genuine and, daresay, cute.
Tsuna abruptly turned to her and bowed. "Thank you very much, senpai!"
It was her first time to see the smaller male smile. He seemed so nervous earlier, it made her constantly worry. Nanami gave him a smile of relief.
"No problem, Sawada."
"I'm back."
"Good work, president!" Everyone greeted Nanami the moment she entered the Student Council office. They immediately went back to work afterwards while she proceeded to her desk and rested her head on the table.
"Gokudera and Sawada, huh?" she silently mused to herself. A thought suddenly flashed in her mind and her eyes widened so slightly.
"Hm, Sawada? That name sounds familiar."
Distracted, Nanami failed to notice a certain dark-suited infant, who watched her from the window with a knowing smile.
To be continued! Our scary skylark will appear in the next chapter!
