"A proper burial." The red head insisted.
"We don't have his body." Reyna said with a sigh.
"What do we have?" Rachel said, despairing. She'd fallen for the Augur from the day she'd met him. The more she saw him and talked to him the more she liked him. He was hardhearted and intense, set in his ways, convinced that he was saving Camp Jupiter rather than serving Gaea. His heart was in the right place he'd just gone too far to get what he wanted. Just like Luke. But Luke died a hero, Octavian had died, driven insane by his visions of being Camp Jupiter's hero. No one would describe him as a hero, still, Rachel had been drawn to him. And now, with her heart shattered in pieces, she wanted at least for Octavian to have a proper burial. The only problem? Octavian's body had blown up. What a way to die. Certainly dramatic. Rachel sighed. Why couldn't she have reasoned with him?
"We have some of his clothes and..." Octavian's former right hand man handed paused, sighed, and continued.
"This." He tossed Rachel a small stuffed raccoon. Reyna looked surprised.
"Octavian had a stuffed animal?"
"Everyone has a soft side. We'll bury his clothes and the toy. Octavian's heart was in the right place. He deserves a burial." Rachel said and Reyna nodded.
"Might as well. Somebody should remember him, even though he died a mad man." Rachel stiffened. Mad man. She hated the description. Octavian wanted to be a hero. He was troubled inside. Everyone had a story and just because no one knew Octavian's story didn't mean he didn't have a reason for what he did. Rachel would have liked to get to know his story. But now she never would.
They buried the toy and clothes at the spot of his demise. Where the onagers had stood days before. When everyone had left and the sun started to set Rachel sat on his "Grave" and began to draw a master piece. Octavian's cold eyes, his soft blond hair, his look of supreme power. Maybe once once there had been a kinder version of Octavian, but this was the one she'd fallen in love with. The one she'd watched die. The one she'd never forget.
She held her picture and wept.
