"Who?" I ask this servant of "Mythal".
Ambrosia blinks a few times, shocked at the fact I didn't know who Mythal was, "Mythal...the Elvhen Goddess. The Great Protector. The Patron of motherhood and justice. The-"
"Okay! I get it. So she's your god? What does that have to do with me?" The Elvhen Goddess, as in...an elf.
"You're an elf, yet you don't know of your own pantheons? I mean, when she said you didn't know much of Thedas, I didn't realize she meant...this," Ambrosia shook her head at me, tutting, "You have much to learn."
"Thanks for pointing out the obvious, Sherlock. Wouldn't be the first time someone's said that to me," I grumbled as my thoughts drifted to Solas.
My heart sunk a little bit; I left him on bad terms. What if that was the last time I'd ever see him?
Stop jumping to conclusions Snow! Ambrosia doesn't look like she's about to kill you, does she? No? Then you still have a chance to get back to everyone.
Ambrosia cleared her throat loudly, gaining my attention again, "I still have a task to accomplish, even if you're not able to understand it right now: The reason you arrived in Thedas."
My head shot up, this woman was saying there was a reason for me ending up in this crazy place? I narrowed my eyes, "How do I know you're telling the truth?"
"You don't. You will have to decide for yourself," Just then the large doors opened and Sariel returned with our food, "We will discuss this over breakfast then?" Ambrosia smiled at me and eyed the food hungrily.
"I'm listening."
She does her best to tell me why I'm here, between mouthfuls of sausage and potatoes.
"The magic that brought you here was very ancient, and very similar to Mythal's. She was...aware...the moment you stepped foot here, you see...you're not the first person from your world to come here. There was a woman called Namathra, that arrived here long ago, with her husband. At first they seemed happy, but the husband eventually left. Leaving her alone in the service of Mythal. Mythal has told me of her a few times; she was an extremely valuable asset." I was still curious of Namathra, but the topic had moved on.
"Anyway, I would have contacted you earlier but... you were surrounded constantly in Haven. Not that we weren't keeping an eye on you," She smiled impishly, "You're quite the temptress."
I blushed furiously, she had been watching me? That means she knows about that kiss with Cullen...This is an invasion of privacy!
She swallowed a bite of turkey, and continued, "The catch is, is that it was not Mythal that brought you here. She claims she does not know who...or what...summoned you here," She leaned in closer, "But between you and me, I think she does, but she doesn't want you to know."
I raised my eyebrows, "Then how can she know why I'm here then? If she doesn't know who did."
"Because of your mark of course! The summoner knew exactly when and where to place you, so you could get that power. Your purpose is to close the Breach Vah'ren. And Mythal intends on helping you stop it sooner, rather than later. She has a gift for you." Ambrosia had finished her meal, dabbing the cloth napkin delicately on her mouth. I hadn't even touched mine yet.
Ambrosia muttered a spell under her breath and conjured a necklace, it had a peculiar shape and inscription on it, but beautiful at the same time, "You must take this totem to her Shrine and complete her ritual. There will be guardians that protect the temple, show them this and they will guide you to the well."
Totem? Shrine? Ritual?! Hold up, hold up.
"Woah woah woah, slow down." I push my hands out in front of me, "You want me to go to some ancient temple and do some ancient ritual with ancient magic and shit. That's too much ancient. I just met you, how do I know you're not just trying to get me killed!"
"This is a gift from the goddess herself! She is not one to waste her time on simply killing mortals. If you truly want to go home, then you must complete the task that your summoner sent you here for. That is what you want, yes? To go home?" Ambrosia had taken offense to my accusation and was baring over me.
"Y-yes, I want to go home..." Suddenly I felt very small and weak.
"Good," She sat back down in her seat, "Then wear this totem to the temple and complete the ritual."
"I-," I wasn't sure what to say, then I thought of all the people that were dying because of the demons, because of the Breach. Even if she was lying, it was a chance that I had to be willing to take.
"I'll do it." I decide.
"Splendid!" She cries, making me wince, she certainly is a spontaneous person.
"Master!" Sariel phased through the wall, not even bothering to open the door.
"What is it?" Ambrosia asks, slightly annoyed at the interruption.
"There are visitors, at the entrance. They're trying to find a way in. I believe I saw the Inquisition insignia, they must have tracked us here." Sariel reported.
My heart jumped inside a little, was it my friends?
Ambrosia doesn't look shocked, "The Inquisition is certainly resourceful."
I give her a skeptical look, thinking back to what she said earlier, "I thought you said this place was hidden?"
"I miiight have embellished a little bit," Ambrosia pinches the air.
"Ha!" I laugh. I had no doubt that back home Ambrosia would have excelled in Hollywood.
"How many are there Sariel?" She asks.
"Three: human, elf and dwarf." So it is them! I'm doing flips on the inside, anxiously waiting to speak to them again.
She turns to me, "Do you recognize this group Vah'ren?"
"Yes! I know them, they're my friends." I almost shout.
"Friends you say? Well, by all means! Sariel invite our guests in, they shall stay the night. Bring them here will you? Tell them their Va-...Snow... is waiting to speak with them."
"Yes, master." Sariel bows and phases through the wall again.
"You're...just letting them in? Thank you?" I'm confused by Ambrosia and her motives.
"Every hero needs their companions. I had no intention of holding you hostage, simply educating you. I'm sure your friends will be relieved to see you. Besides, I don't need the inquisition bashing down my doors, they're quite expensive you know. Maybe I should invest in shrouding this place...to make it hidden...it would help with all the bandit problems..." I had stopped paying attention to her mutterings and was watching the double doors to the dining hall intently.
Only minutes passed by, but it felt like hours, soon I heard Cassandra's heavy footsteps echoing through the halls.
I felt like I was about to explode. I stood up in my chair, ready to run out the door.
Finally, the door creaked open. All three of them burst through the door, with Sariel trailing behind them.
Automatically, my eyes met with Solas's first. The look of worry instantly melted from his face, replaced with a glowing relieved smile. I almost ran up to him, but he told me with his eyes that we'd have time to speak later.
Varric appears at my side and pats me on the back, "It's good to see you, and in one piece."
Cassandra on the other hand bombards me with questions, "What happened? Are you hurt? How did they take you?" She cursed at herself, she felt like it was her fault I was taken in the first place.
I laughed, "It's okay Cassandra. I'm okay. Don't blame yourself."
She looked past my shoulder and saw Ambrosia, who was sipping quietly from her cup, watching the scene take place, "Who is this?"
"Just what I was thinking Seeker," Varric said.
She set her cup down gracefully and stood with poise, "Ambrosia. You are standing in Illahnas Keep, as my guests for the night. I swear by all hospitality rules that you shall leave unharmed in the morning."
She left out the whole servant of Mythal thing...
"What makes you think we'd want to say here?" Cassandra says aggressively.
"You must be tired from your long journey. V-Snow can assure you no harm will come to you, besides, Snow and I have not yet finished our business, isn't that right?"
"Uhh, yeah." I say awkwardly, I didn't know if she was going to hurt them or not. But I didn't see the harm in staying the night, "Let's just relax for tonight. We have a journey ahead of us."
"We do?" Varric asks.
Cassandra cut in, "We don't have time for off-side journeys Snow, the Breach is our top priority."
"It has everything to do with the Breach, Seeker. I'll explain more later," I suddenly grew weary, "Come on, let's eat."
Sariel brought in extra food for my friends, as requested by Ambrosia.
I took my seat as before, while Solas sat beside me. Cassandra and Varric sat across from us, I could tell the Seeker was famished. Had they searched all night for me? The thought was warming. The fact that they actually cared about me that much...or the fact that I was their only hope at surviving the Breach...
"A toast." Ambrosia held her cup in the air, "To our savior."
Savior? I wasn't a savior, just extremely unlucky. And if Ambrosia was telling the truth, then really really unlucky.
To my surprise everyone held up their glasses, "Our savior,"
We all drank deeply from our goblets, quenching any thirst.
"Are you still angry with me?" Solas whispered in my ear when Varric and Cassandra became lost in an argument.
"Take a guess," I go to hold his hand under the table, "I'm just glad you all came after me," I give his hand a squeeze.
"When Cassandra came to me in the middle of the night I knew something was wrong. She thought you might have been with me, when you weren't...it was probably one of the first times I ever saw her truly panic." He laughed at the memory, "Of course I wasn't laughing at the time. I thought you might have gone off wandering because of our fight..."
"Why is everyone blaming themselves?"
"I'd blame myself if something happened to you," Solas looked into my eyes with care, "I meant it...when I said I care about you Snow."
My heart melted at his words, "I-I know that..."
The day progressed on, after we finished eating, Ambrosia lead Solas and I to the library. She held true to her word when she said she wanted to educate me. The library was just as ostentatious as the rest of the keep. Solas seemed pleased enough, grabbing an interesting tome and sitting snugly in a cushioned seat.
Ambrosia had different plans for me, "First and foremost, I shall educate you on your people's pantheons. She held a thick and dusty book setting it on the nearest table, she motioned for me to sit, and for the lesson to begin.
"Great, more ancient stuff," Was my only comeback before she excitedly dove into her explanations.
She managed to teach me about the nine different gods and goddesses. Then there were the "Forgotten Ones".
"Well that doesn't sound ominous at all." I remarked sarcastically.
Ambrosia smiled, and from across the room I could hear Solas conceal a laugh, "They were the enemies of the pantheon, evil and full of malice, but powerful beings. Fen'Heral, the Dread Wolf, betrayed both the pantheon and the forgotten ones, and locked them all away."
"Why would he lock them away?" I furrow my eyebrows. How does one lock away gods in the first place?
"That is for another day, perhaps." Ambrosia slapped shut the book, abruptly ending the topic.
"Wait, if all the gods were locked away then how could-"
"Snow! The discussion has ended. And so has the lesson, I expect you'll keep our business private until the morning yes?" Ambrosia lowered her voice into a fierce whisper.
I look over to Solas, who is looking back at me with a questioning expression. Why doesn't she want my companions to know she's Mythal's servant? She said so herself I should have companions accompany me to the shrine.
I hesitate, unsure if I should trust her, but...what other choice did I have? "Yes." I say quietly, so Solas couldn't hear us.
"I'm glad to hear it," Amrbosia perked up, "The night is late, you should retire to your rooms. Tomorrow you start your journey."
I nod, and look over to Solas to follow us out of the room. He quickly replaces the book on the towering shelf and makes his way over to us.
We leave the room together, but Ambrosia leaves us at the next turn, giving us directions to our rooms which were close by.
"That woman...Ambrosia...she seemed quite upset earlier." Solas brought up the conversation I had promised not to talk about.
"It was nothing really. I just...I offended her that's all. I apologized so it's all good." I play it off causally. Although I can tell he doesn't buy it.
He doesn't push the topic though, instead he stops me and puts his pale hands on my shoulders, "We searched for a very long time to find you Snow, and during that entire time...I feared you were dead." He squeezed my shoulders and pulled me into his chest, "When we tracked you to this place...I wondered what had happened to you. And seeing you in that room, perfectly fine and well. I realized how much I was afraid to lose you, and how seeing you made me...relieved."
"Oh Solas..." I sighed into him, listening to the low rumble of his voice in his chest, "I believe you...I'm sorry I didn't before. Its just, I don't like people treating me as though I'm inferior. It...makes me angry and irrational. I'm sorry for making you worry so much."
He ran his fingers through my soft hair, breathing in me as I breathed in him. We embraced each other, holding our feelings on our sleeves, within a comfortable silence.
Finally, Solas broke away, letting his hands slide down to hold my hands, "You are..." he inhaled deeply, letting out a loud breath as he spoke, "so important to me."
At this confession, I held my breath. I couldn't say it back to him for some reason. I felt...paralyzed.
"You should sleep, as should I. May you have safe dreams, Snow." Solas said, opening my chamber door. We had reached my room a long time ago, and only now did I realize it.
"Goodnight, Solas," I smile back at him, my eyes twinkle in his.
I'm forced to break the contact as I slowly close the heavy chamber door. It shut with a soft click, and with that click came the breath I had been holding. I slid to the ground, blushing, and closed my eyes.
"You are so important to me..." I repeat his words, thinking over them with a sweet remembrance.
I eventually find my self lifting up the bed sheets and laying down on the grand bed to finally end the emotion filled night.
Solas made me think differently when I was around him. I felt happy, warm, and comfortable.
I wanted him to stay in my life, and I felt as though...for the first time in a long time...I could trust somebody.
