"How did Lancer convince us to chaperone again?"
"You mean how did Lancer convince you to chaperone," Tucker Foley corrected. "Sam and I need to know why you volunteered us."
Danny Fenton couldn't help but grin. Sure, he had to stand in the middle of their gym and wait for a group of freshmen to come and cause too much chaos to handle, but at least now his two best friends had to join him.
"I suppose trying to wrangle a bunch of snot-nosed freshies is better than listening to Mrs. Bancoff talk about equations driving her husband away," Sam Manson said, looking around at the decorations and game tables. "But do any of us know how to babysit?"
"You and Tucker did pretty good with the sack baby," Danny teased.
"Uh, I did a good job with the sack baby."
"I helped!" Tucker said defensively. "But Danny didn't volunteer our help because were good babysitters, he did it so he didn't have to be alone with Jazz."
Danny cringed and looked across the gym to where his older sister was. Mr. Lancer was regaling Jazz with another of his tales, and even she couldn't feign interest. She caught sight of him and sent a big smile and a wave when Lancer wasn't looking.
"How is it knowing your sister's in on your little secret?" Sam asked as he waved back.
"Nerve racking," Danny admitted. "I don't know what she's thinking anymore. Half the time I know she wants to help, and the other half it looks like she wants to lock me in a closet!"
"Well she cares about you," Sam said.
"And she's nuts," Tucker added.
Danny and Sam shot him dirty looks.
"What? It explains why she wants to lock you in a closet."
Danny rolled his eyes as Lancer came up to them.
"Your sister just had a great idea," he said, holding out rediculous looking hats with waving arms on the sides. "You three can wear these so the freshman from Norrisville can find you."
"You've got to be kidding me," Sam growled, holding the hat at arms length.
Tucker perked up.
"Norrisville High is coming here?" he asked.
"Yes, Mr. Foley," Lancer said as he handed him his hat. "Their principal just called and said they'd be here in less than an hour."
"No way! This is gonna be epic!"
"Why?" Danny asked as Lancer gave him his dorky cap and walked away. "What's so great about Norrisville?"
"Are you kidding?" Tucker cried, staring at him in disbelief. "Dude, as a hero you should know!"
"I'm not a hero, Tuck, I just-"
"Protect the town, thwart evil doers, I got it. But still, how have you not heard of-"
Danny and Sam shrieked when he ripped his yellow thermal off, but relaxed when they saw he had a black t-shirt underneath. Sam squinted at the picture of someone in a black suit and mask, red lines streaking around it with a matching scarf blowing about behind him.
"The Ninja?" Sam said incredulously. "You mean that urban myth circulating around Norrisville?"
"He's not a myth, he's real!" Tucker said, glaring at her. "He's like the coolest crime fighter ever!"
Danny cleared his throat and shot him a glare.
"...Second coolest crime fighter ever! He and those before him have protected Norrisville High for eight hundred years!"
"Why would they protect a high school for that long?" Danny asked.
"Beats me, but they've got video proof of him."
"You mean someone dressed like him," Sam corrected, rolling his eyes. "Come on, Tucker, you can't really believe that. Sure, Danny's powers are real and ghosts are real, but why would a ninja protect only protect the high school? High schools didn't even exist eight hundred years ago!"
"They didn't?" Danny asked. "What I wouldn't give to be born back then..."
"I don't know why he protects the school, I just started looking into him," Tucker grudgingly admitted. "But you gotta admit it's cool!"
"It's probably just a story, Tuck, to make their school seem more interesting," Sam deduced with a shrug. "Like when everyone was hooked on that rumor that locker 724 was haunted."
"But...724 was haunted," Danny pointed out.
"Well it isn't now," Sam said, smiling at him. "And we've got a new rumor. And no school can compete with ours."
"Got that right," Tucker agreed, throwing an arm over Danny's shoulders. "Any ninja has to take a backseat while Danny Phantom's around."
Danny beamed at his friends' compliments.
"Oh, I see them!" Jazz called from the gym entrance. "Everyone get into position!"
"Well, here goes," Tucker groaned as he took off his beanie and put the goofy chaperone hat on. "You so owe us for this."
"Why put it on?" Sam asked as she threw hers behind her. "We'll probably be the tallest ones in the room."
"True," Danny laughed, moving to throw his away.
A hand wrapped around his wrist and he cringed up at his sister's stern glare.
"Oh no you don't," Jazz said, snatching the hat from him and shoving it onto his head. "These kids need to be able to find you, so you're going to wear it the whole time!"
Danny sighed and fiddled with the brim, but didn't move to take it off. Jazz's face softened for a moment as she watched him, then hardened when she turned to Sam. The other girl put a hand up defensively.
"Two people are now wearing that hat. If I were to wear it I'm conforming, which will hinder my individuality and is a bad example for the freshmen."
Jazz's eyes widened, then she growled.
"Fine!" she cried out. "But make sure they know your a chaperone."
"I will!" Sam called after her as she stormed away.
Danny and Tucker gaped at her.
