The Life of Carriers

Chapter 8

Carriers

Note: I know it seems unexpected, but this is the last chapter of the story. I hope you all enjoyed this story and I promise to come up with another KanColle story soon. Anyway, please enjoy the finale.

The next day, Kaga got up early and ventured out to the docks. She knew that Akagi wouldn't be back, but just the act of waiting for her made her feel that much closer to her. She'd watch the sun clear the horizon as another day came around. She wanted to be with Akagi, but there was no stopping this war and what it entails.

The days started to get longer as time went on, but there was still no sign of Akagi. Occasionally, she would put on her gear and sail the seas. She missed the feeling of the wind gently slap against her face. She missed the sensation of breezing through the water. Apparently, it's been a lot longer than she realized since she's been out on the water. She always looked to her side, but was immediately saddened. On her side, there was always Akagi standing next to her, but she was alone right now. This caused her to take a loud sigh as the members of Carrier Group 5 passed by. Their bows were drawn as they launched a few scout planes into the air.

"There. That should be good for now."

"Shoukaku-nee, I just love the way you hold your body when you fire. It's almost romantic."

"Oh stop it, it's nothing special."

"It is special. I don't think I've ever seen anyone shoot more beautiful than you." Kaga managed to overhear the two of them and couldn't help but think that Akagi was the better shooter overall. At that moment, the two of them made their way over to Kaga was simply standing by herself.

"Good morning, Kaga-san. How are you today?"

"Huh? I'm good. What are you two doing out here?"

"Oh, just some simple scouting stuff. Nothing too special. There's been word that the enemy is planning on attacking the mainland." Usually, this would have a caused a spark in Kaga, but because she was thinking about something else, she was speechless. "Are you okay?"

"Y-Yeah, I'm fine."

"You know, I find it weird that the Admiral did not want you out there on the front lines. You're such a valuable carrier that I don't understand why he's keeping you here." Kaga bowed her head.

"Because he already sent some of the best out there a few days ago."

"Don't think so low about yourself. We carriers always look up to you and Akagi. You're inspirations to all of us. Even her, but she won't admit it." Her finger was pointed at Zuikaku was hiding behind her. "You gonna say anything or are you gonna hide like a child?" Zuikaku peered her eyes away with a dirty look.

"Hey." Shoukaku couldn't help but chuckle. She always acted like this around Carrier Group 1, but Shoukaku constantly tried changing this attitude in her.

"Hey."

"So do you have an idea when they'll come back?"

"I don't know, but I know it'll be soon."

"What makes you say that?"

"Because they have to come back. We need them." Shoukaku looked to the horizon as Kaga turned around and headed back to land. That was enough work for one day. She packed up her things and decided to eat something at the café. Of course, she knew it would be weird eating there without Akagi, but she had to. She couldn't sulk around forever like the world was ending. As she settled in, she looked around and saw a bunch of girls file into the café. They all had smiles on their faces as they were busy with their current conversation. Soon after, her food was brought out to her and she started to dig in. Without Akagi with her, she wasn't pushed to eat with a quick pace. She was able to enjoy her food and take in the atmosphere around her.

It was surprising for she never noticed it before. Everyone who was there was having a great time. Always being Akagi made her only pay attention to her, but seeing this made her feel like she's been missing out on a lot. She didn't talk to anyone, but enjoying the sight was enough for her.

After that, she decided to head back home. Once there, she went into the back and pulled out her bow and practice arrows. It's been so long since she's done any target practice and since she was all by herself, there was really nothing else she could. Every shot she made was a perfect bull's eye. Unfortunately, this didn't put a smile on her face. There was no motivation for her. She was just shooting purposelessly at a defenseless target. Soon after, she put away her things and locked herself in her room.

When the next day came around, no new orders were given to her so she was allowed to stay in her room. She had no motivation to do anything so she laid on her bed and stared at the wall next to her. This gave her time to think, but the only thing she could think about was Akagi. She never realized how clingy she was, but it wasn't really a bad thing. She was her partner so it was only right to be worried about her partner. She closed her eyes and tried to calm down. As she did, images of her and Akagi filled her mind. The first day they met, their first mission together, their first; all of these things were soaring through her head until she ended up falling asleep.

It was until the day turned to dawn when she finally woke up from her sleep. She opened her eyes and stretched out her body. That's when she realized that she hadn't done anything for the entire day. She grabbed her things and decided to do some sailing before the day died away. Right as she opened the door, she was cut off by a familiar face. Her eyes widened as she dropped her bow on the ground.

"Hello Kaga-san. I'm sorry it took so long, but I'm back now and I'm…" Akagi was unable to finish her sentence as Kaga fell into her body and squeezed her as tight as she could. "I've missed you too."

"Akagi-san."

"I'm fine. There's no need to worry about me anymore." Kaga lifted her head and looked her straight in the eye.

"I love you, Akagi-san."

"I love you too." Akagi gently placed her hands on Kaga's cheeks and kissed her on the lips. Kaga immediately lost all of the strength in her body to where Akagi's body sent her back stepping back into the room. She closed the door behind her and enjoyed her night back with her one and only love.
