Prologue

"Breakfast!" I roll over in bed and sigh as I reluctantly get up. "Breakfast kids!" Mom calls from downstairs. I trudge to the bathroom and into the shower.

When I get out, I feel refreshed and warm. I slip on a scoop-necked cream colored shirt with wispy sleeves and it is knitted in the back so you can see though to my skin (only about halfway down). The pleats on the scoop neck part highlight my chest. I slip on a pair of dark wash jeans and pull on my All Star converse shoes. They are crafted in a black and white rose print giving a 'vintage' feel with the leather lace guard. And of course, on the heel is the all star patch also on the inner ankle and on the 'tongue' of the shoe.

I lace those up and clip my sterling silver golden sun and moon necklace. It is a silver half moon with a golden sun nestled in the moon. I slip my gold and cream stack of bangles on my right wrist and grab my black over-robe. I slip it on and adjust it so the greenish-blue flower on the right can show. I slip my wand (Vine and Cedar with the core of a Thestral hair, 13 inches) in the holster on my left wrist and leave the bathroom. I grab my black messenger bag and head out the door.

I trot down the stairs and swing myself around the corner. I swing the door to the kitchen open and am bombarded with noise as chaos greets my eyes. Mom's green eyes are flashing with anger as she scolds Dad, Sirius and Elena (my younger Gryffindor sister, she is 15). It really doesn't help that all three of them are snickering. I glance over and see the cause. Markus (my younger Slytherin brother, he is 14) has gold and red stripes all over his face.

Harry (my Gryffindor twin) and Andrea (Drea to her family, she is 12 and in Ravenclaw) and Landon, (the oldest at 18 and is also in Slytherin) are torn between snickering and looking disapproving. I roll my eyes and shake my head, walking to the counter and grabbing a couple pieces of toast.

"Come here!" I look up, startled. I am usually invisible to my family. Ever since they revealed to the family when I was 6 that Harry had defeated Voldemort and told me they would treat all of us the same and then promptly forgot I even existed. I frown when I notice that she is only talking to Sirius, who changed into a dog and is trying to creep out of the kitchen. I sigh and eat my toast.

My hand tightens on my bag strap as I head out the door.

The sad thing?

I walked by Mom and Sirius and they didn't even notice me.

The Next Day

"Breakfast!" I sigh and roll over.

Every day. Every damn day it is the same. I get up. I get dressed. I go downstairs. I grab some toast. I am not noticed as I pass by all of them and out of the kitchen. I go to the Weasley's house. I enjoy being noticed. I come home. They forget to save me dinner and I make some food. I go to bed. I fall asleep feeling worthless.

Rinse.

And repeat.

I groan and roll over.

"Mreow." I roll back over and smile at my kitten.

"Raza, what am I going to do?" I ask the kitten and he paws at my face. I smile at the sheer cuteness of my kitten and pick him up. Raza has short, soft cream fur with darker brown fur on his tail, on his his nose leading between his eyes and on his ears and on three of his tiny paws. He has light blue eyes and I adore him.

"Meow." He says and I giggle, burying my nose in his fur.

"I know. It's about damn time I got over them, huh?" I whisper, a deep sorrow filling my heart and making me wonder if it will ever go away. He nuzzles under my chin and I sigh as I stroke the tips of my fingers down his back. His rumbling purr shakes his small body and eases the pain in my heart. "It's time." I sigh and hold the kitten up to my face. "It's time for me to move on and accept they don't care and probably never will." I tell him and he blinks his wide blue eyes at me.

"Mew." His soft meow comforts me and I bury my face in his fur, blinking back the tears from my deep green eyes.

"Okay." I choke out. "Time to be strong." I take a deep, shuddering breath and breathe for a few moments. I open my eyes, set my jaw and get up. I pull on my clothes and grab my bag. I pick up Raza and rush downstairs. I race into the kitchen, grab a piece of toast and back out (bitterly noticing even when I make lots of noise they still don't notice me). I go into the living room and grab a handful of Floo powder, toss it into the fire and shout my destination.

"The Burrow!" I jump in, wrapping Raza in my shirt and am whisked away. I fall out of the fireplace and straighten, my gaze racing around the house.

"Kenna? You are early! What's wrong?" Ginny asks, noticing my distress and excitement. "What did they do this time?" Disapproval is clear in her voice. She really hates how my family has been ignoring me.

"Nothing. Where is Bill?" I ask hurriedly and she frowns. Normally I ask for the twins.

"In the back. Wh-" I don't stick around long enough for her to finish her question. I race through the house and burst out the back. Bill is in the air, flying with Charlie, Ron and the Twins.

"Bill!" I shout, waving an arm in the air. "Bill!" I call again and he notices me. He flies down and lands in front of me.

"Hey, Kenn-" I cut him off.

"Yes." I hold my breath and he frowns in confusion. "Yes. I will do it." His face clears and a wide grin breaks out on his face.

"Really?" He asks, delighted. I steel myself and nod.

"Yes." I answer and he whoops, pulling me into a hug.

"What is going on?" Mrs. Weasley asks, coming outside.

"She said yes!" Bill shouts. "She agreed!" Mrs. Weasley's mouth falls open and a smile spreads across her face.

"Congratulations dear!" She tells me and the others land.

"What's happening?" George asks, striding forward, his blue eyes flicking between me and his brother.

"Kenna has accepted Bill's proposal." Mrs. Weasley claps her hands happily.

"A proposal? Like marriage?" Ron asks and I roll my eyes.

"No dufus. Bill asked if I would be interested in an apprenticeship as a Curse Breaker this summer. I agreed." I explain, hoping the twins won't be mad at me for not telling them. Though, to be fair, I wasn't even planning on accepting.

"Oh." Ron smiles. "Wicked!" I turn to the twins but they are gone.

"They'll be okay." Mrs. Weasley says and I grin.

"Thanks Mama Weasley." I turn to Bill. "So, when do we start?"

A week later

"-and then we are going to finish with a temple in Egypt. Cassie was contacted by a group of wizards there that requested our help in getting into the temple. Four of their Warding experts have been killed by the nasty stuff guarding it." I nod animatedly, almost jumping to match Bill's long steps. We are heading to Diagon alley to buy all of the stuff I will need on this trip. A couple of goblins will even be going with us.

"All right, first stop will be Madam Malkin's. She can work on your clothes while we are getting the rest of your stuff." I nod and follow behind Bill as we weave through the crowded Leaky Cauldron. We step out into the alley behind the inn and Bill taps the stones as we head into the Alley. People are rushing around, doing shopping and meeting friends. I make sure to stick close to Bill, inwardly cursing my small size. Hopefully I will have grown by the time we get back this summer.

"After you." Bill opens the door and I scurry inside. Thankfully, it isn't as crowded inside as it is outside.

"How may I help you, dears?" Madam Malkin asks and Bill steps forward.

"We are going to need a full Curse Breaker wardrobe." She nods and gestures me forward.

"We just need to get your measurements first, dear." I nod meekly and follow close behind her, sending a helpless look back at Bill. He chuckles and waves, taking a seat by the door. "Now, take a spot up here." I step on to the stool and face her. "Taking an apprenticeship?" She asks conversationally and I nod.

"Yes, ma'am." I answer quietly.

"Good, so, for your wardrobe, you will be getting light cloth with cooling charms woven in. Will you be requiring any armor or battle robes?" She asks and I look over at Bill. Seeing the helpless look on my face, he sets aside the paper and gets up.

"Do I need battle robes?" I ask softly and he nods.

"What kind of material do you have?" Bill asks and she perks up.

"The only kind we have in now is dragon. Will that do?" She asks and he nods but I speak up.

"Um," I bite my lip nervously. "W-what other kinds of material do you use?" I ask.

"Well, any kind that can protect against spells and the like. To tell the truth, Basilisk is the best type of skin to use but I haven't used that kind in years. It is much too expensive." She explains and I nod.

"W-what if I had B-basilisk skin? C-could you use that?" I ask and they stare at me.

"Where in Godric's name would you get basili-" Bill begins, staring at me with wide eyes.

"Certainly. In fact, I would recommend using that instead." She answers, cutting him off and I smile.

"May I get down?" I ask and she nods. I step down and pull my shrunken trunk out of my pocket. I put it on the ground and press my thumb to the silver plate. It resizes and I open it, tapping the mark for storage. "Basilisk skins." I command clearly and the basilisk sinks appear. I twist to look up at Madam Malkin. "Will this be enough?" I ask and she nods eagerly.

"Enough for at least 10 people." She says, her eyes locked on the skins. I frown, there are going to be 6 of us (including the two goblins) coming on the trip.

"Can you make 6 dueling robes?" I ask. Bill frowns and shakes his head.

"You don't have to do that." He protest but I nod.

"I don't want anyone on our team dying. I would feel horrible if one of them died and I knew there was something I could have done to stop it." I tell him and he sighs.

"At least let me pay for theirs-" I shake my head and pull out the skins.

"Consider it a thank you gift." I tell him and turn to the seamstress. "Use the scraps to make 34 wand holsters." I tell her. "And then I would like the rest of the scraps back." She nods and bustles away, snapping at one of her workers to get my measurements.

"You are so giving." Bill tells me, shaking his head fondly. I just smile at him and get back on the stool.

"I got my way, didn't I?" I ask cheekily and his groan is my only answer.

4 days later

"-on't forget to write often and-"

"Okay!" Bill laughs as we stand in front of Gringotts. We are going to be leaving for our first expedition in half an hour. "Mum, I can do this!" He grins and pulls her into a hug.

"Oy, don't-

"Forget to-

"Write us!" Gred and Forge chorus and I grin.

"I promise I will." I joke and squeal as the crush me into a hug. I pull them close and smile.

"I'm going to miss you guys." I tell them seriously and they nod.

"We'll miss you too." They tell me quietly and I hug Ginny one last time.

"Take care of them for me?" I ask and she nods.

"I will." I brush back her hair and smile gently at her before moving on and hugging Mrs. Weasley.

"Thank you so much." I whisper to her and she hugs me tighter.

"You take care of yourself, okay?" Mrs. Weasley sniffs tearfully and I nod.

"I promise." I hug Mr. Weasley and step back.

"Bye." I call as Bill and I go up the steps.

"Don't replace me!" I shout to the twins and they grin.

"Never!" They shout back and I grin. Bill waits for me by the door and I race up to him, still unused to the silky fabric rubbing against my skin. I bounce by Bill's side as we go inside the Bank and over to a goblin's desk.

I freeze.

The Potter's are inside the bank. I watch them, old feelings of abandonment washing over me as I see them laughing and joking without a care in the world.

"They don't even notice." I whisper and laugh, a bitter broken laugh. "They don't even care." My whisper is broken and Bill stands silent beside me. I look away. "Let's go." I fall back and behind Bill, sneaking small glances at the happy group. A sharp pang hits me in the chest as even Remus doesn't even notice I am gone. My own godfather. I shake my head and look away, refusing to torture myself anymore.

"Oy! Bill! Over here!" Bill walks faster and greets his friend. I am almost running behind him and have to wheel my arms on my tip-toes to stop myself from slamming into his back when he stops walking. A deep laugh makes me look up. My eyes meet warm brown ones. They belong to an older man with short black hair speckled with grey and a large belly. Although he is short, even he is taller than me.

I catch myself pouting at the thought.

"Careful there, don't want to crash!" He bursts out laughing again and I blush, biting my lip shyly.

"Sorry." I mutter to Bill, lowering my head. He shake his head, a fond smile lighting up his blue eyes.

"Don't worry about it. That is just how Harvey is." He gestures to the laughing man and I scowl. He wipes the tears of laughter from his eyes, momentarily removing his square framed spectacles.

"That was a good laugh." He says and turns to Bill. "So, who's the kid?" He jerks his thumb at me and I automatically bristle.

"I'm 15, not a kid!" I exclaim and he bursts out laughing again. I blush angrily, cross my arms and stare mutinously at the ground.

"All right Harvey. That's enough." Bill says, easily telling the older man what to do.

"Is the kid joining us?" I turn to the speaker. He is tall, has the broad shoulders and slims down to a lean figure, and his ash-blonde hair falls carelessly into his edgy, pale, wolf-blue eyes framed by thick blond lashes. My breath catches in my throat and I blush, looking away.

"This is Kenna. She is apprenticing with me." Bill tells them and they start with surprise.

"This is Kenna?" The ash-blonde with the startling blue eyes asks in disbelief. "She looks like a light gust of wind could knock her over!" He exclaims and I scowl. Bill shakes his head.

"She's a lot stronger than she seems." The guy starts to protest but stops.

"Are you ready?" I whirl around and take a step back, my emerald eyes wide. Behind me, a goblin stands, bristling with weapons.

"Are you Sharpclaw?" Bill asks friendly, holding out a hand to the goblin. It? He? Looks at it with disdain before nodding curly.

"I am. This is Gobbletooth. My partner." He gestures to a slightly smaller goblin behind him and Bill nods.

"Yes, we are ready to go." He rests a hand on my shoulder and holds out a portkey.

We all grab it and it lights up a bright blue as it whisks us away.

One week later

I shift anxiously, a rock digging in my side. It is my turn to guard the camp tonight. This is the seventh night we have been here.

We are in Padurea de Magik și moarte. That means the Forest of Magik and Death in Romanian. We are here (in Rome) because a team of Hit Wizards stumbled on a warded area when they were chasing a Dark Wizard. Two members of the team died.

I suddenly hear a noise and perk up. I start to get up but hesitate. I remember the second night we got here.

Flashback

Snap.

I stiffen. I turn on my side and look at Bill in the bunk next to mine. I start to wake him up but I can't help but think about how embarrassed I will be if the noise is just nothing.

Snap.

I slowly get out of bed and pull on my boots. I slip outside and pause, cocking my head to the side. I don't hear anything. I shrug and turn to go back inside but freeze.

Snap.

I slowly turn and move to the edge of our campsite. I peer out into the darkness but no matter how hard I look, I can't see anything. I slowly step closer to the edge.

Snap.

I jump back, startled but a tiny meow stops me. I smile as I realize it must have just been a lost cat wandering in the forest. Relieved, I carelessly step over the line and all hell breaks loose.

The Ancient Romans believed in a monster called the Crocotta. It was said to be a wolf-like beast native to India. It was said that when it hunted, it would mimic human speech. The Crocotta would hide near a human village and listen to people's conversations. Eventually, it would learn someone's name and call that person, luring them into the woods and devouring them.

Eventually, the Muggles lost belief in that story and attributed it to the over exaggerated stories of Hyenas'. Though the Crocotta can mimic human speech, that is not the only thing this large, spotted, wolf-like feline can do. It can mimic the sounds of other animals.

The second I step over the line, the warding flared and broke, allowing the large cats to storm the camp. I screamed with fear as one caught me on my right shoulder with it's teeth.

"Kenna!" Bill called and brandished his wand. The large feline yelp as fire licked at it's pelt and raced away. Bill rushed over and started healing my shoulder, muttering spells frantically. My eyes started feeling heavy from the lose of so much blood. "NO, goddamn it! Don't close your eyes, Kenna!" Bill swears and reaches into his cloak, pulling out a potion. He pulls the cork out with his teeth and spits it to the side before pouring the healing potion directly on my wound.

I cried out with pain and Bill's face creased with relief as the wound started to close. He gently picked me up and cradled me his arms.

"What the fuck happened?" His icy blue eyes flashing, the ash-blonde storms over to Bill and I. "Why the fuck would you cross the warding lines?!" He asks angrily and Bill stiffens.

"Back off Nixon." Bill warned him in a low, dangerous voice, but the blonde (Nixon) doesn't listen.

"How could you be so foolish?!" I notice he has a long gash down his arm but I only care about defending myself right now.

"I didn't know! No one told me!" My voice is hoarse and Bill's arms tighten around me.

"You should have known! We shouldn't have to tell you something a first year would know! This is why I didn't want you coming with us. You are nothing but trouble!" He shouts and whirls around, stalking off angrily.

Tears burned in my eyes as Bill carried me back to the tent and tucked me in.

I couldn't help but wonder if I should have come.

Flashback Ended

I clench my jaw, remembering the way Ash scolded me. (I call him ash because of his hair and I refuse to use his name if he won't use mine.) I pull out my wand and cast a spell.

"Homenum Revelio." I whisper the charm and can see around ten human shapes light up before disappearing. My eyes widen, an automatic squeak of fear catching in my throat. "Oh, no." I whisper and race into the tent. "Bill! Bill, get up." I shake him and he bolts up.

"What is it? What's wrong? Are you okay?" His eyes scan worriedly over me.

"There is people around our campsite!" I tell him and he throws back the covers getting the others up.

"What is it now? Did the kid get scared of her own shadow?" Ash asks, tossing back his sheets. My eyes widen as I see his bare chest and I blush as I look away.

"No! There are people outside!" I retort, not looking at him.

"How would you know? You're just a kid." He says and I can hear the smugness in his tone. He has been finding ways to torment me and I have just stupidly given him another way.

"I cast the Homenum Revelio spell and around 10 figures lit up. That good enough for you?" I ask, straightening and staring him right in the eye. His smirk falters and a strange look crosses his face before he gets up and pulls on his battle robes. I whirl around and pull mine on. They settle comfortably on me and I race out of the tent, looking for Bill.

He is staring out in the darkness with a clenched jaw.

"What do we do?" I ask him, worry lacing my tone.

"We have to face them. They will find us sooner or later, at least this way we can catch them off guard." He says and I nod, pulling out my wand again.

"Ready! Set! Fall!" Bill calls and the wards drop. I freeze as the wizards race to me, the coppery fear making my stomach roil. "Fight, Kenna!" Bill shouts, ducking a sickly yellow curse. I snap out of it and cast a spell.

"Reducto!" I shout, flicking my wand in a sideways v shape and a man jerks to the side as blood starts pouring out a gaping hole on his left arm. I freeze, a sick feeling growing in my stomach. I did that. How could I do that?

The man shouts a spell and I watch with a distant sense of horror as the green light shoots at me. Someone knocks into me, shoving me to the ground.

"I thought you could fight!" I stare into the furious face of Ash and he drags me to my feet, his hand firm around my left wrist. He fires curses left and right, ducking and weaving but keeping me right behind him. We almost make it to the tent when he comes up against two wizards emerging from it and goes on the defense. He cries out as a curse hits him and I jerk.

I raise my wand, determined not to die.

"Reducto!" I shout firmly and the spell hits one of their wand hands. The wizard lets go with an agonized scream but I don't let it freeze me. "Stupify!" I shout and the man slumps to the ground.

Adrenaline and excitement are pumping in my veins now and I face Ash, my green eyes almost glowing in the dark. He is staring at me with that strange look in his eyes again.

"What?" I ask and he shakes his head.

"Nothing. Stay by me. We need to see if Harvey is okay." I nod and follow behind him, absentmindedly noticing he has resumed gripping my wrist again. I follow close and by the time we reach the older man, Ash and I have to take down two more wizards.

When I notice Harvey, my jaw drops. He is dueling the last three wizards by himself. He twirls his wand and banishes one wizard, simultaneously Stupefying the last two. He moves with a fluid grace and control that takes my breath away.

"Wow!" I breathe, in awe of the portly wizard in front of me. "Can you teach me to Duel like that?! It was amazing! " I exclaim. Harvey beams and takes his glasses off gently cleaning his glasses with the edge of his robes.

"That? That was nothing! You don't want an old codger like me teaching you!" He says, his cheeks turning red. I grin, eagerly bouncing on my toes.

"Are you kidding?! That was bloody brilliant! " I exclaim.

"Kenna! Are you okay? Merlin! I thought something had happened to you! You just disappeared! Thank Godric you're not hurt!" Bill exclaims, looking me over with relief visible in his bright, blue eyes. I smile up at him.

"I'm fine. Harvey is going to teach me how to duel like him! Isn't that wicked? And you can actually thank Ash, he was the one who kept me safe! And I took down two full grown wizards! You should have seen me! It. Was. Wicked!" I squeal, full on bouncing on my toes.

"I am?" Harvey asks, bemused. "Huh."

"Wait! Since when is my name Ash, kid?" He asks.

"Since you call me "kid"." I retort. Bill grins fondly at me.

"Just let it go, guys. Once she makes up her mind, you guys are never going to win." I laugh as we head back to the tent, ignoring the unconscious bodies littering the ground.

Two days Later

"All right, do you know what the most important rule in a Duel is?" Harvey asks me as I face him.

"Um, Don't use a spell you don't know how to properly use?" I guess and Harvey shakes his head.

"That is a good rule but that is not the most important rule. Nixon? Do you have an idea?" I look over at the blonde standing a few feet away from me. (Somehow Harvey dragged him into the Dueling lessons too.)

"Never turn your back on your opponent." Ash lazily explains, twirling his wand casually in his right hand. I half expect him to yawn with boredom.

"Correct!" Harvey explains excitedly. "What is something you need to be in order to Duel someone and win?" Harvey asks and Ash speaks up.

"Do I really need to be here for this? I already kn-"

"Yes, you do. Now, anyone know the answer?" Harvey asks and I raise my hand. "You don't need to raise your hand, dear." He informs me kindly and I lower my hand, blushing. I ignore Ash snickering beside me.

"You need to be smart?" I guess and he grimaces.

"Well, that is true but the answer I was looking for was fit. You need to have good stamina in order to dodge and duck and especially if you are going to be casting a lot of spells without a break." I nod. "So, while we are on this trip, we are going to be getting you fit." Harvey easily explains. "The first step for today is stretching. You have to stretch you muscles so they don't cramp or tighten while you exercise. Like so-"

Turns out, Harvey is really flexible for an old guy.

As we leave our campsite, I look around, not sad to be leaving. I grab the portkey and we are whisked away to our next adventure.

When we land, we are in Nigeria.

"Where are we?" I ask Bill, my wide eyes searching the planes.

"We are in Nigeria, our destination is the Hadejia-Nguru Wetlands in the northeast." He informs me and I nod.

"Hey Bill?" I ask and he looks down at me. "How many languages do you know?" I ask and he grins.

"About 15, you really need to know at least one person who can speak many languages in this business. We can get in lots of trouble if we can't speak the peoples language. I remember there was this one time in Libya we were almost killed because no one in our group knew what they were saying. We got lucky though, a member of their tribe had been studying English and so we were released."

"Wow." I breathe and he laughs at me, tossing an arm over my shoulder and pulling me closer.

"You wanna know something cool about Nigeria?" He asks and I nod eagerly, my eyes wide with wonder.

"Nigerian Muggles have lots of "myths" about their land. A few of them are true. The first one is the legend of Na-akpụ akpụ Osisi which means The Moving Trees in Igbo, one of the Nigerian languages. In Zaria, they have a legend about big boabab cotton trees that move at night and kidnap anyone they see out and about and trap them in their trunks."

"What? Why?" I ask and Bill chuckles.

"I don't really know but some say they eat them, others say they use their dead bones as compost." He shrugs. "We never really know. But I tell you what. If I ever meet one, I promise I'll ask them why." Bill laughs and I grin up at him.

"There is also a legend about the Inedible Fish." Harvey says, turning to face us. "In Kogi state, there is said to be a river called "Inachalo River." It is said, the river is cursed and when you catch a fish, no matter how long you cook it, it will always stay raw. It is also said, any injury a person receives from the bones of the fish from the river will never heal." Harvey finishes and I grin.

"I think that would make the perfect weapon." I tell him and he pulls out a small dagger from his boot. He pulls the sheath off and shows me the gleaming, bone white blade.

"It does." He tells me and my eyes widen as he tucks it back in his boot.

"You are so cool." I whisper and he chuckles. "What about you? Do you have any good stories?" I ask Ash and he grins suggestively at me.

"I do." He says in a low voice and I blush.

"Not like that!" I glare and he laughs, straightening.

"Yes, I do. There is the legend of the Forbidden Orchard. It is said, there is a wild, enchanted orchard in the forests of Benue, where beautiful, bountiful fruits grow all year round. Anyone who finds it may eat his or her fill but if you attempt to take so much as a seed from there, then the the Orchard traps you and you will remain lost until you eat it or throw it down." Ash says, his edgy, pale blue eyes distant. "But what the legend doesn't tell you, is the longer you hold the piece of food, the more the Forest sucks your life and your magic until you die."
