Song for this chapter: Elastic Heart by Sia

Mara POV:

I could feel my cheek pressed against a cold, solid surface. I felt the cool sensation against my cheek, and I slowly lifted my heavy eyelids.

When I opened my eyes, I saw that I was lying on a filthy lament floor. I was lying on my stomach with right cheek pressed against the dusty surface.

I quickly get off of the dusty floor, and I discovered that I was in a room. The room was shaped like a small box with a brown painted wooden door in the front, around five hooks with an outfit sitting on the left wall, and a large glass tube that reached toward the ceiling at the very back of the room.

The walls of the room were painted charcoal gray and it surprisingly matched the dusty floor. I turned my attention to the navy blue outfit. The outfit was hanging on a sharp, sliver hook, and I walked towards it.

There was a navy blue jacket with three golden buttons on each side and no hood. There was a royal blue tank top underneath the jacket and a pair of navy blue tight fitted pants. There was a pair of long laced navy blue boots underneath the outfit. I knew the outfit had to be a uniform to represent the Erudite faction, so I decided to change out of my clothes and into the outfit.

After I was done changing into the outfit, I placed my old clothes onto the hooks, and then I walked towards the wooden door.

I touched the golden door knob, and all of a sudden a loud alarm went off. The sound of the alarm was like a loud screeching noise. I wanted nothing more than for it to stop.

When glass tube suddenly opened up, the noise stopped abruptly.

"Good afternoon, Mara now that you have touched the doorknob you have now opened the doors of the tube that you will be entering." A voice that sounded similar to Judith spoke.

By the tone of her voice I was 99 percent sure it was her.

"The wooden door is locked, so there is no point in trying to escape. You are now one of our test subjects in our experiment, and your only way out of the room you're currently trapped in is to enter the pod. You have approximately 60 seconds to enter inside of the pod before the door's shut again. Once the doors are shut they will not open again, so I suggest you hurry, and remember that you are doing this for the greater good of the future initiates. Good luck." Judith stated, and I walked towards the tube hesitantly.

I wondered what would happen to me if I chose to not enter the tube, and the doors remained locked. Would they just leave me in there to die or kill me themselves?

Then I decided that it would be selfish to my parents if I chose to die, so I walked inside of the glass pod. As soon as I entered the pod the doors shut abruptly, and the pod was being lowered into the ground.

The pod was slowly lowered into the ground, and I was surrounded by darkness. The pod went further and further into the ground I wondered would it ever stop.

After several minutes of being lowered further into the ground the pod stopped moving, and the bottom of it touched the floor.

The pod's doors opened, and I stepped out of the pod. Once I stepped out of the pod the door closed automatically, and I noticed I was standing in a circular shaped tunnel highlighted by hundreds of ultraviolet blue and white lights.

There were bulbs of blue and white bright UV lights on every inch of their circular shaped tunnel. The lights were so bright they could pierce your skin or burn your eyes.

The floor of the tunnel was made of glass and underneath the glass was the white and blue UV lights sitting in pattern.

I walked onto the glass floor like I was walking on eggshells I placed one foot in front of the other not wanting to make any sudden movements.

I had my eyes pointed to the very end of the long, brightly lit tunnel. I slowly made my way to the end of the tunnel, and when I got closer to the end I saw that there was a metal, circular door.

When I finally approached the door, I noticed that the center of the door resembled a mouth.

There was a touch screen rectangular pad on the right side of the metal door, and I placed one of my fingerprints on the pad.

The metal door opened automatically like a monster opening its mouth ready to feed off its next meal.

I walked in-between the mouth of the door, and I entered another room. The room appeared to be more normal. There was no circular shaped tunnel or glass floor. The room was shaped like a rectangle with a hardwood floor.

In the center of the room was a rectangular shaped, white table with one cushion chair on each end.

On top of the table was an average sized, sapphire blue book bag with one strap.

The book bag had two compartments. A large compartment at the back, and a medium size compartment in the front.

I lifted the book bag, and I noticed it felt slightly heavy. I unzipped the book bag to see a touchscreen notepad, a stylus pen, a watch with a blue band and glass screen, and a big black flashlight.

Everything was located in the largest compartment, and I grabbed the watch and placed it on my left wrist.

I zipped the book bag back up, then I threw it over my head and across my chest.

I looked up to see another circular door sitting in the center of the room on the opposite side of the entrance.

I moved towards the other side of the room, and the door opened before I could walk up to it.

I walked through the door's mouth once again to see something unimaginable before me.

There was three rows or stories of circular doors. On each row there were five doors each, and I assumed each one of the doors represented the five factions. The doors were just pressed against the olive painted wooden walls, and I wondered how anyone could make it to the second and first floor of tunnels since there were no pods around.

On the ceiling were white UV lights that highlighted the room.

"What in the hell is this?" I asked unconsciously.

Then I directed my eyes to a female dressed in a long gray dress that fell to her ankles, a quarter length sleeved knit sweater, and a gray cotton headband standing only a few feet away from me. She seemed to be taking in her surroundings like me. I walked beside her.

"I have no idea." She answered.

The female had shoulder length strawberry blond hair, chestnut brown eyes, and she was about an inch shorter than me which means she was 5'2.

"I'm Clover Dale by the way." Clover stated looking over at me for the first time.

"Oh, I am Mara Pedrad. I see you are an Abnegation initiate." I said and Clover looked surprised for a moment.

"Yeah, how did you know?" She asked.

"Because you are wearing a plain, long, and gray dress." I addressed.

"Oh right, I was born in Amity though. I bet you're an Erudite initiate from Candor." Clover said.

"I feel embarrassed to say that I am, but yeah I am." I replied.

"Why would you be embarrassed?" Clover questioned.

Just when I was about open my mouth to speak, I heard the sound of the metal circular door's opening on each floor.

Clover and I both gazed up at the metal doors, and I expected something to pop out of each one but there was nothing there.

"Ouch." Clover said touching her the right side of her neck.

"What?" I asked.

"Something bite me," she said. Then I saw three long legged medium sized spiders crawling towards me. I backed away calmly.

"It probably was a spider. Come on, let's get out of here." I said touching Clover's shoulder to get her attention. The spiders were only inches away from crawling up my leg. I stepped on two of them as they approached me. The other spider crawled towards Clover.

"But where did the spider that bit me go?" Clover asked seeming confused.

"It doesn't matter let's just get out of here." I voiced once again.

I looked up at the open metal doors and I saw that larger spiders where crawling outside of the doorways. The black long legged spiders where about the size of both my hands put together.

"Oh crap." Clover said finally realizing how much danger we were in.

I grabbed the bottom of Clover's arm, and I pulled her towards the circular doorway that I walked through after I got my book bag.

"No!" Clover screamed.

"I think we all have our own individual tube. I entered through the third door down there." Clover said pointing to the third door.

"Fine, just go." I demanded. I turned around to see to spiders moving at rapid speed towards us both. The closer the spiders got the more I noticed how they resembled adult ticks with their small heads and fat backs.

The creatures had black long legs like spiders and the bodies of adult ticks. They were spider tick mutants most likely created by the Erudite faction.

I ran towards the circular door I walked through to enter the strange place.

The door shut behind me, but around seven of the ticks managed to crawl into the room. I backed away from the doorway, and the ticks crawling towards me.

I made my way towards the door in the front of the room, so I could go back through the front door.

The ticks were crawling on top of the table while some crawled on the two chairs crawling towards me.

I sprinted towards the front door of the room, and the door opened automatically. I ran through the door, and I could hear the small clicking noises right behind me on the glass floor of the tunnel.

I ran all the way to the end of the tunnel where the glass tube was located. The door of the pod opened, and I entered it quickly.

As soon as the door closed the spider ticks crawled onto the outside of the pod. The pod moved off the ground slowly, then it started to move up rapidly.

In the matter of seconds, the pod was back in the room I woke up in before I went underground.

The pod's doors opened once again, and it was free of any spider ticks.

After that I decided to make an unwise decision.

I strolled towards the wooden door at the front of the room, and I turned the knob expecting the door to still be locked. But when I turned the knob the door was unlocked. Then the door opened slowly with a loud creaking noise.

I pushed the door opened further as I stepped through the doorway. Once I walked through the doorway, I noticed that I was in a dark building.

The only light shining in the building was from a patch of sunlight coming from the arch shaped doorway at the front of the spacious room.

The room was so open and spacious it resembled the front of a building.

I turned around to see the front of the door I walked out of was labeled Erudite 2, and the door on the left side of it was labeled Erudite 1.

The doors were lined up in a horizontal row with Dauntless 1 and 2 first, Amity 1 and 2 were second, Abnegation 1 and 2 were third, Candor 1 and 2 was fourth, and Erudite 1 and 2 was last.

I assumed my signature label was Erudite 2 and that all the females from each faction were labeled number 2.

I shut the door behind me, and I walked towards the center of the room. I saw two white painted doors on both sides of the room. There was a door labeled women's restroom on the right and men's on the left.

I walked into the patch of sunlight that shined into the building.

I stood in the arched shaped doorway with the sunlight shining on my face, and I was hit with the fresh scent of grass.

The strong scent made my nose burn and my eyes water. The bright sunlight shined in my eyes, I squinted to see nothing but grass, large steel walls that stood about 100 feet, and nine other people standing around the confined square shaped space.

Based on the sight in front of me, I knew that the experiment had just began.
