Chapter One – Let's Start Over

"Can you please walk faster? We're going to be late," Emily spoke, approaching the black Mercedes Benz SUV in front of her and opening up the rear passenger door, gently draping the garment bag that held her dress across the seat. It was a beautiful fall labour day in Philadelphia, the weather almost perfect. Sun shining, a light breeze through the air that was strong enough to feel refreshing, but not strong enough to mess up her hair. Normally Emily would have taken a moment to appreciate the beauty of the nature around her, specifically the falling leaves from the trees, which was her favourite part of the beginning of fall. But she was too frustrated to focus on anything other than the time. She turned around to see her best friend approaching with significantly less urgency than she wanted to see in that moment. Irritation built inside of Emily as she let out a sigh of annoyance, her eyes narrowing at the girl who was now almost in front of her. "Walk much? Seriously, hurry up Hanna!"

"Would you relax, Em? You do realize that the church is only like… Ten minutes away, right? No need to throw a hissy fit," Hanna responded while proceeding to place her own garment bag on top of Emily's in the back seat. By the time she had gotten to her car Emily was already sitting in the front passenger seat, a scowl on her face as she tapped her foot impatiently. The blonde rolled her eyes at the sight in front of her, quickly closing the back door of her car before getting into the driver's seat and turning to Emily. "Can you just calm down? We're going to be on time."

"Hanna we are in this wedding. We can't just casually stroll in late. This is the first time one of us is getting married! Eight years in the making! I don't want to be the one to mess this up," Emily declared, and rightfully so. It had in fact been eight years since they had all graduated high school, and in that eight years they had all grown up and branched out in their own ways. But all it took was for one wedding to get them back together to celebrate with one another. The last thing Emily wanted to do was ruin any of it. "And besides, it's easy for you to tell me to calm down. You're not the one who got their ass handed to them for being late to the rehearsal dinner yesterday."

Emily crossed her arms against her chest and leaned back in her seat, still bitter as she recalled the memory of it. Briefly taking her eyes away from the road, Hanna glanced over at Emily, her eyebrow cocked as she scoffed at the girl's comment.

"Hey, don't get mad at me; that wasn't even kind of my fault. You're the one who took like a million years to actually be ready to go. I broke just about every traffic law and got us there five minutes sooner than a driver actually obeying the rules of the road," Hanna pointed out, and as much as Emily didn't want to admit it, she knew the blonde was right. Any and all fault for her being late to the rehearsal had been completely on her. But that didn't mean she had to acknowledge it.

"Whatever, that's irrelevant," Emily responded, holding her hand up as though she was waving off the comment. "The point is – I don't want to be late again. So we need to haul ass because I refuse to spend my final vacation day being yelled at."

"Okay well if I agree to take any blame for us being late, will you calm the hell down?" Hanna questioned, and immediately she could see Emily nodding in agreement from the corner of her eye. "Good, because as much as I want to be going 100 miles per hour from here to the church, I think what would actually ruin the wedding would be if we died on the way there. So if it gets you off my back, I will gladly deal with Ezra's hissy fit on the off chance that we roll in late," she declared, both girls laughing at Hanna's words.

"I still find it ironic and hilarious that out of the two of them, Ezra is the bigger wedding nightmare to deal with," Emily stated, shaking her head while letting out a few chuckles. "You know, I always figured it was going to be Aria who was the total mess."

"At first, definitely. But looking back at the three years of engagement and their time spent planning the wedding, I definitely realized that Aria has always been the less neurotic one, really," Hanna responded, earning another head nod of agreement from Emily. A momentary silence came over the two of them, but was short-lived when a smirk came across Hanna's face before she started speaking again. "So, speaking of sloppy… Who do you think is most likely to fall victim to the sloppy wedding sex this time around?"

"Ha!" Emily scoffed, sarcastically chuckling at Hanna's question. "It's definitely not going to be me. Plus, I mean logically if we look back to the last time we were all at a wedding together," she paused, looking up and tapping her chin, pretending as though she was actually thinking about it. "Oh that's right, if I recall correctly, it was you who had all the sloppy wedding sex, no?"

"Okay that was six years ago, and I've matured since then," Hanna stated matter-of-factly with her head held up in pride. "And besides, since the last time we were all at a wedding it was me who did it, wouldn't that logically mean that it would be you this time?"

"Yeah, no. That's not logic, Han. That's more of a weird assumption. Plus, I saw the result of yours and Caleb's sloppy wedding sex, and how royally pissed off Melissa was that she caught you two doing it in the back of the coat check room at her wedding – classy, by the way. So needless to say, I know better than to follow in your footsteps," Emily explained, quickly glancing away to realize that Hanna was now pulling up to the church. The blonde parked the vehicle, and then turned to Emily with a smirk on her face, slightly shrugging at her in response.

"Well, you know what I always say; no risk, no reward," the blonde replied as she opened her door to exit the vehicle. Emily burst out laughing at the remark while following Hanna's actions and also exiting the vehicle. Both girls took their respective garment bags from the back of Hanna's car, and began to head towards the entrance of the church. "By the way, for the record, Caleb was the one who initiated the wedding sex. So considering the fact that we're not together anymore, I doubt I'll be going down that route anyways."

"Do you think Caleb is gonna be here today?" Emily questioned cautiously, knowing that it was still a touchy subject for the girl. She glanced toward Hanna, looking for a response, but all she received at first was a look from the blonde as if to say, 'Really?' Once they finished climbing the last few steps of the stairs that led to the church's entrance though, Hanna let out a deep sigh and turned to Emily who stood right next to her.

"When Caleb and I broke up, he disappeared from my life forever. Someone who just up and leaves like that… Well it's pretty rare that they come back out of the blue. You of all people should understand that," Hanna explained, before walking off, her words momentarily stopping Emily in her tracks. She tried not to let the words get to her though, and instead just let out a deep exhale before following Hanna's trail. Her eyes travelled down to her wristwatch, and she smiled at the fact that they had just made it in time. Emily quickened her pace a little, wanting to make sure that her presence was seen so as to avoid another lecture by one Ezra Fitz, but her steps quickly came to a halt when she walked into Hanna who stood firmly in place, her gaze locked directly in front of her.

"Han, we barely made it on time. Why did you sto—oh boy," Emily started to speak, but her words were almost immediately lost when her eyes moved from Hanna and toward the direction in which the blonde was looking. In front of them stood not only Caleb, who neither girl had seen since he and Hanna broke up, but beside him was someone that Emily never thought she would ever see again in her life. Not since one rainy day, five years ago in the summer of 2015 when she came home to an empty house and a broken heart. Yep. Stood in front of her was one Spencer Hastings; the girl who stole her heart and never truly gave it back.

"You have got to be freaking kidding me," Hanna murmured under her breath. "Maybe they won't see us."

But as if on cue, both Spencer and Caleb looked toward the doorway of the church where the two girls were standing, all four of them now locking eyes with one another. Looks of shock but more so of complete awkwardness were exchanged between the four of them, Emily finding herself wide-eyed yet unable to look away from Spencer's awkward gaze, and Hanna whose gaze mirrored Caleb's raised eyebrow look. The awkward situation didn't stop Emily from trying to fully take in Spencer's appearance – the brunette hardly changing from the last time she recalled seeing her five years prior.

Emily found that it made the situation that much more difficult for her. Because how could she recall the hurt and anger that Spencer left her with all those years ago, when all she could think about was how breathtakingly gorgeous the woman in front of her was? Her hair seemed darker than she'd recalled for the time of the year that it was. Usually after the summer, Spencer's hair was at least three shades brighter than normal due to the amount of sunlight it caught. It made Emily wonder what Spencer could have been up to that prevented her from spending time outside; summer was the brunette's favourite season. Nevertheless, her hair still looked wonderful - longer than usual, yet still kept in perfect waves. She couldn't stop her eyes from travelling down Spencer's body, her breath catching at the sight. While Spencer managed to maintain her slim figure, Emily couldn't help but notice how much curvier she had gotten. She hardly got the chance to fully take in the brunette's body however, as she felt herself being pulled away abruptly.

By the time she had snapped out of her Spencer-induced haze, she realized that she had been pulled into a private room by Hanna who had slammed the door shut before leaning against it, eyes closed and taking deep breaths. It was in that moment that it hit her; Spencer Hastings was really standing out there in the church, after five years of no communication between the two. Emily could now feel herself panicking too, as she began to pace back and forth, muttering the words 'oh my god' over and over again.

"Emily? Hanna? What are you two doing in here? What's wrong?" a voice called out from the middle of the room, causing the two girls to redirect their attention to Aria, their jaws almost instantly dropping. Aria stood in front of them, practically glowing in her wedding dress. Her hair was swept up into a perfectly messy bun, a few tendrils of her curled hair falling on either side of her face, and the make up was done so as to make her hazel eyes firmly stand out. Aria's wedding dress itself was exquisite; the top of it was strapless and hugged her chest, a strap around her torso that tied into a bow off to the side. The waistline was princess-style, the bottom half of the dress flowing freely. And while it was shorter in the front, stopping just above her knee, the back of it trailed so that when the brunette walked it looked as though her dress was flowing freely. All of it was completed with her peep-toe heels that were an off-white, almost silver colour, which matched her elegant diamond earrings and necklace.

"Ar, you look… Incredible," Hanna complimented, momentarily forgetting why they had even stumbled into her room in the first place. Emily stood next to the blonde, a soft look in her eyes as she nodded in agreement.

"Yeah, Aria you look amazing. Ezra's a really lucky guy," Emily added with a genuine smile, taking a step forward and pulling her best friend into a hug. Aria reciprocated it immediately, and Hanna found herself joining in on the moment, proud of Aria for being the first to walk down the aisle. After a few moments, Aria pulled away and let out a light sigh as she looked at her two friends.

"Thanks you guys, I appreciate it. But did you come in just to tell me that?" Aria questioned, slightly confused as to why the two of them had looked so flustered when they'd first entered the room. But as soon as she asked the question, she noticed the demeanor of the two girls shift almost immediately, and just like that they were back to freaking out.

"Right, that. What the hell are Caleb and Spencer doing here?" Hanna questioned with a scowl on her face. Her arms were crossed over her chest, and Emily who stood beside her held a similar stance.

"Oh!" Aria responded, her eyebrows shooting up slightly. "So you saw them, huh?"

"What do you mean, oh? You invited them and didn't tell us? Ar, what the heck?!" Emily spoke with a tone of frustration as she had been completely thrown off by the revelation that Aria had been keeping that information from her for such a long time. Aria just sighed, almost as though she had been anticipating her friends' reactions the entire time.

"Okay look, in regards to Caleb, I didn't invite him. That was Ezra's idea. But I swear I didn't even know that he was coming. As for Spencer…" Aria paused and sighed once more, which let Emily know that Aria had been behind it. "I sent Spencer an invite out of courtesy. After all, we still are kind of friends. I swear my plan was to tell you if she actually confirmed, but she never sent in her RSVP. After not getting a response, I ended up calling her a few weeks back and telling her that I really wanted her to be here, because I do. I mean she was my best friend, and we made a pact and everything. But Spencer didn't respond to that message either, so I thought she wasn't going to show up."

"Wait, what do you mean a pact? I hope you're not talking about that ridiculous five way wedding pact we made when we were in high school, because if you are then that would make her…" Emily paused, trying to recall the memory correctly. As it clicked in her mind, she looked to Aria who was sheepishly avoiding her gaze, and her eyes bulged out at the realization. "Aria! Please tell me she's not your maid of honour."

"Wait, she can't be in the wedding. Spencer wasn't even at the rehearsal dinner yesterday. How can she possibly be in the wedding?" Hanna questioned, at this point just trying to find any and every way to remain in her state of denial.

"I had my mom stand in as the maid of honour in case Spencer didn't show up, but when she ended up surprising me this morning we did a quick run through for her, and yeah. I mean you know how quick Spencer is at learning. And it helped that she was Melissa's maid of honour too," Aria responded with a shrug. Emily's eyes remained widened in shock, as she truly struggled to comprehend the situation. "Em, please say something? I'm really sorry I didn't tell you sooner."

"I just… Let me just see if I've got this correctly. You're telling me that not only do I get the lovely pleasure of seeing my ex-girlfriend who I haven't seen or spoken to in five years, but I also have to stand literally two feet away from her for an entire wedding?" Emily asked, though the question was more sarcastic and rhetorical at that point. "Oh and by the way I'm really loving the coincidence of you deciding to have your wedding on yours and Ezra's anniversary, conveniently also mine and Spencer's. So that's just super," she rambled on. Not knowing how to respond, Aria gave her a half-smile, shrugging her shoulders ever so slightly.

"It's for the bride?" Aria tried to reason with an innocent look on her face. Emily exhaled deeply, and Aria couldn't help but flinch ever so slightly when Emily stepped forward and placed her hands on Aria's shoulders.

"Okay Aria, you're one of my best friends and I love you. Which is why I haven't already killed you for this yet. But please don't make me have to hit a bride on her wedding day. Just tell me you don't have any other surprises up your sleeve," Emily asked, a look of concern in her eyes. Before Aria had the opportunity to respond though, the sound of knocking on the door took hold of the three girls' attention, all of them shifting their gazes toward the door, which was now opening, Spencer peeking her head in.

"Oh," Spencer muttered out, slightly taken aback by the presence of Hanna and Emily. "Emily, Hanna. Uhm… Hi," she spoke softly while giving them both an awkward tight-lipped smile. Emily averted her gaze from the brunette as Hanna rolled her eyes at the girl, stepping forward in her signature 'bitch' stance – arms crossed over her chest with her weight slightly leaning more on her right leg.

"Spencer. Nice of you to finally let us know you're still alive after 5 damn years," Hanna snapped, pulling the door wide open so that she could storm out, purposely brushing past Spencer harshly. Spencer's eyes widened at the blonde's hostility, not expecting or completely comprehending it. Her eyes followed the blonde for a few seconds before the sound of Emily's sighing pulled her attention back.

"I should go change and make sure she's okay. I'll see you out there," Emily spoke towards Aria who just nodded and gave her an apologetic smile. After giving the petite girl a quick hug, Emily redirected her attention to Spencer who was still stood quietly in the doorway. "It's nice to see you again, Spencer," she spoke softly, giving the brunette a tight-lipped smile of her own before exiting the room.

Despite all of the pre-wedding drama that had occurred, the ceremony had gone off without a hitch. It wasn't a huge wedding, mostly just family from both Ezra and Aria's sides, a few of each of their coworkers, along with their close friends. Spencer had pulled off maid of honour flawlessly with Hanna, Emily, and an extremely late Alison standing next to her as Aria's bridesmaids. Across from them the entire time were Wes, Ezra's brother and best man, along with Mike, Hardy, and Noel who Ezra had become surprisingly close with over the years. After taking wedding photos outside of the church, everybody disbursed into their own groups and made their way to a hall that the bride and groom had rented out for the reception.

The reception program hadn't been a long one, and thankfully due to the seating arrangements, it wasn't an awkward one either. Periodically throughout dinner the girls gave their own speeches, and once dinner had ended the dance floor was cleared of tables, replaced by people who filled it right after Aria and Ezra had their first dance as a married couple. Hanna and Alison had left Emily alone at their table, both girls wanting to go to the bathroom but neither wanting to go alone, so Emily sat by herself, watching everybody on the dance floor in front of her. Her thoughts had trailed off as she mindlessly observed the crowd, smiling at everyone's awkward dance moves; weddings always seemed to bring out the best in people, and the dance floor was where she often found it most obvious. Emily found her thoughts so preoccupied; she hadn't even noticed a certain brunette approach her table. That was of course, until the sound of the chair moving next to her bringing her back to reality.

"Hey," Spencer greeted shyly, leaning her weight against the chair in front of her. Emily glanced up at the girl, giving her a soft half-smile.

"Hi," Emily responded quietly. "You, uhm… You can sit down if you'd like."

"Thanks," Spencer accepted, taking the seat directly to Emily's right. Neither girl knew what to say to each other as they awkwardly sat in silence. Both girls were trying to sneak side-glances at one another, but neither was successful. Every time one of them would try, the other would happen to make the attempt too, causing both girls to quickly look away. This continued on for a few minutes before Spencer finally mustered up the courage to say the first thing that came to mind. "You dyed your hair."

"What?" Emily questioned, her eyebrows slightly furrowed as the comment had thrown her off guard. Spencer turned her body slightly so that she was properly facing Emily, and she smiled.

"You uhm. You dyed your hair. It looks really nice," Spencer pointed out, and it clicked in Emily's mind what she was referring to. It had been nearly a year since she had dyed her hair a dark brown colour, with a light brown ombre blended into it. The last time she'd been complimented on the change in hair colour had been months before, so having Spencer point it out had caught her off guard. Nevertheless, Emily smiled gracefully at the girl's words.

"Thanks, I've had it for a while now. But I mean obviously you wouldn't have known that so yeah, uh, thank you," Emily responded, finding herself rambling as she quickly got flustered. She let out a deep sigh, and shook her head at her own actions, running her fingers through her long brown locks. "This shouldn't be this awkward."

"Look, it's been five years. Everything that happened between us was so long ago. You've moved on I'm sure, and so have I. Let's just put it in the past and start over. Deal?" Spencer proposed. Emily let out an audible exhale, thinking it over in her head. While she didn't particularly want to let it go, as she still hadn't gotten closure from everything that had gone down between them in all that time, she really wanted the awkwardness to pass.

At this point the situation could go one of three ways. One, they never spoke of what happened between them ever again. Two, they pushed past the awkwardness for the sake of Aria's wedding, and discussed it at a later date, provided they stayed in touch post-wedding. Or three, their reconnection lasted the length of the wedding reception, leaving the two girls to never speak to each other again. None of them were ideal, but as much as Emily hated to admit it, she missed the brunette's presence in her life. And while seeing her again had brought back all the memories of their break up, it also brought back all of the memories of how incredible their relationship had been.

"Okay, yeah. A fresh start sounds like a good idea," Emily agreed with a smile on her face. Spencer instantly reciprocated the smile, the happiness evident in her eyes upon hearing Emily's response. Emily looked down, nervously fidgeting with her fingers for a few seconds before glancing back up, her heart racing at the sight of Spencer quietly observing her. She tucked a piece of hair behind her ear and let out a shaky breath. "Do you uhm... Do you want to dance?"

"Oh, uh..." Spencer began, the teacher's question catching her completely off guard. The look of hopefulness in Emily's eyes made her heart flutter. Sure, it had been five years, and a lot had happened between the two. But regardless of circumstance, she still had trouble saying no to the girl. "Sure, why not. It's a wedding after all."

Emily perked up at the girl's response, standing almost immediately and offering her hand out to Spencer who accepted it with a smile on her face. A slower song that neither girl recognized came on just as they approached the dance floor, and it was as though the last five years hadn't happened, instantly falling into step with one another. Spencer wrapped her arms around Emily's waist while Emily gently locked her hands around the brunette's neck. The two were in relatively close proximity of one another, but it was obvious that neither were trying to get too close, the feeling of their skin touching having been overwhelming enough. They swayed side to side silently, appreciating the peacefulness of the moment, neither of them noticing any of their surroundings anymore. Not the people around them, not the music playing. Just each other.

"So tell me, what has the great Spencer Hastings been doing for the past five years? I mean, nobody has really heard from you at all. Are you a hotshot lawyer now, married with a big fancy house, and nice car?" Emily questioned, feeling the brunette's shoulders shake with laughter.

"Something like that," Spencer responded vaguely with a bit of a chuckle. She ran one of her hands along Emily's back, pulling the girl in closer while looking away for a brief moment. "I moved to Boston and attended Harvard Law School," she started, Emily briefly interrupting by making an impressed whistling noise. Spencer laughed at Emily's reaction, shaking her head in amusement. "Yeah, yeah. Fancy, I know. Anyways, so I graduated from Harvard, and ended up landing a really good job at a great law firm, already on my way to making junior partner, and I get my own office."

"Your own office?!" Emily gasped exaggeratedly as she pulled away slightly to look at Spencer with a fake look of awe, earning an eye roll from the brunette in front of her. "No way," she continued on, giving the brunette a wink as she began to giggle.

"Ha-ha, very funny. How did I forget about your wonderful sense of humour," Spencer spoke, her words dripping with sarcasm as Emily continued to laugh at her own words. "You're such a dork," she commented, unable to take the smile off of her face as she watched Emily continue to laugh at her own comment. Spencer moved one of her arms from around Emily's waist, lightly jabbing her in the side, which caused her to squeal lightly, her body shifting forward so that she and Spencer were even closer. The lack of space didn't seem to bother either girl however, as neither corrected the distance, Spencer just resting her arm around Emily's waist once more. "Quit laughing at your own joke and tell me what you've been up to."

"Okay, okay let's see," Emily paused, her breath catching as she realized how close in proximity Spencer now was. She let out a shaky breath, trying not to the smell of Spencer's perfume invade her senses. "Well, I'm a teacher now, which is great aside from the fact that this is my last weekend of vacation before school starts on Tuesday. Also, uhm I... Well I sort of...," Emily spoke, taking another pause to think of what to explain next. As she was about to speak however, Alison approached the two girls, her phone in her hand.

"Hey Em. Xavi just called my phone looking for you, so you might want to give her a c—" Alison began, but her voice trailed off as she noticed Emily's eyes bulging slightly, which caused her to take note of the fact that the girl Emily was dancing with was Spencer. "Oh, sorry I didn't mean to interrupt. Hey Spencer, long time no see."

"Alison," Spencer responded rather coldly. The air instantly became tense between the three of them, Spencer and Emily no longer swaying, but instead standing in place as Alison's eyes shifted back and forth between the two girls. Spencer held a neutral look on her face, her jaw slightly clenched while Emily looked away uncomfortably.

"Okay, uhm. Good talk. I'm just gonna… I'll tag up with you later Em," Alison spoke, taking one last glance at Spencer whose neutral face had turned into a full on scowl before the blonde walked away.

"Was that necessary?" Emily questioned with a sigh, looking over at Spencer whose glare still followed Alison as the blonde disappeared across the room. "Spence!" she stated a bit louder, snapping her fingers to get the girl's attention. At the sound of the snapping, Spencer shifted her gaze back to Emily who looked at her with a cocked eyebrow. "Seriously?"

Spencer gave Emily a look as if to say 'oh, please', which caused Emily to roll her eyes, pulling away from the brunette and going back to her table. She watched Emily walk away, slightly shocked at the reaction the girl was giving her. In Spencer's eyes, she had every right to react the way she did, didn't she? But then the words of their earlier conversation rang through her mind. Put it in the past, and start over. Spencer rolled her eyes and let out an exasperated sigh, making her way back over to Emily who was once again sitting down.

"Look I'm sorry. My bad, or whatever," Spencer mumbled out bitterly, her words hardly constituting as an apology.

"Five years and some things never change, do they?" Emily commented in reference to Spencer's actions. The lawyer simply shrugged her shoulders with nonchalance, not having any shame or regrets in her actions, to which Emily just shook her head. Emily sighed, and just as she was about to continue speaking, the sound of her phone ringing cut her off. Remembering what Alison had told her just moments before; Emily quickly reached into her purse and pulled out her cellphone to see who was calling. "Crap, do you mind? I have to take this."

"By all means," Spencer replied, gesturing for her to go ahead and answer her phone while she sat back down beside the girl. Emily gave Spencer a soft grin before turning her body in the opposite direction and answering her phone.

"Hey baby, sorry I didn't answer earlier. I was dancing."

Spencer's shoulders immediately deflated upon hearing Emily answer her phone call. Who was she calling baby on the phone? Emily hadn't mentioned a girlfriend, and if she had one, why wasn't the girl there with her? Why was Emily being so flirty with the dancing and the touching? Spencer sighed deeply, running her fingers through her hair. She knew she had no right to be curious or even remotely jealous. They were over, she had moved on with her life. Or so she'd thought; but there she was five years later, with the same feelings she'd thought were long gone. It was overwhelming, and infuriating all at the same time, and Spencer had no idea how to handle it. For the first time in five years she felt a lack of control, and it bothered her to no end.

"I'll be home later tonight. You'll probably be asleep but I'll see you in the morning okay? I promise. I love you sweetheart. Goodnight."

Love. Emily loved this girl. And that was more than enough for Spencer to hear. She stood from her seat, smoothing her dress out as she let out a shaky breath. Emily, who had just disconnected her phone call, turned her body to see Spencer standing up and looking flustered.

"Spencer, are you okay?" Emily questioned, noticing the girl's strange behavior.

"What? Yeah I'm fine, I just… It's getting late. I should really be heading out actually. Early day tomorrow and all," Spencer stated, but Emily could tell something was off with the brunette. She just didn't know what it was exactly.

"Are you sure? It's not that late, are you sure you can't stay for a bit longer?" Emily asked, but Spencer was quick to shake her head no in response.

"No, I should really get going. I, uh, I told my girlfriend I would call her. Yeah, I told her I would call her and I don't wanna miss her before she goes to sleep. So I should go," Spencer declared with a tight-lipped smile that Emily furrowed her eyebrows at. Before the teacher could say anything more, Spencer leaned in and gave her a brief hug before pulling away awkwardly. "It was good seeing you, Emily."

"Yeah, uhm, you too, Spencer. Take care of yourself," Emily responded, and Spencer nodded in acknowledgement before turning away from the girl in front of her and starting to walk away. "Hey by the way," she called out, and Spencer halted her movement, spinning around to face the girl once more. Emily broke out into a warm smile as she looked down briefly before glancing back up. "You uhm… You look really good, Hastings."

A grin broke out across Spencer's face, the brunette unable to control it. The two locked eyes once more and Spencer threw her a shy wink before turning around and walking away.

"I can't believe you slept with Aria's brother. What happened to no sloppy wedding sex?"

Emily was sat alone in her empty classroom and on the phone with a very hung over and regretful Hanna. It was the end of the school day, but Emily had a few things to go over in her lesson plan, which she had intended on doing until receiving a text from Hanna saying that she needed to, 'CALL HER ASAP, LIFE OR DEATH SITUATION'. Sure, it was a bit of exaggeration, but nonetheless Emily could have used the distraction. So now, she was sat behind her classroom desk, listening to the series of unfortunate events that was the life of Hanna Marin. Apparently while Emily had been re-familiarizing herself with Spencer the night before, Hanna had been familiarizing herself with Mike. So much so that when she woke up, it was in a hotel room with the younger Montgomery draped around her body.

"Ugh, stop saying that. I don't even know how it happened, or what even happened. Which is kind of depressing because Mike is hot."

"Gross Han, we used to like… Babysit him."

"Oh whatever Em. One of us had to get laid, though I'm kind of impressed that you didn't have your own tumble in the sack with Hastings."

"You have such a way with words, Hanna. It amazes me. But no, it's really not surprising considering until yesterday we hadn't spoken in five years. And she has a girlfriend. And I have Xavi."

"Really, she has a girlfriend? Because she was drooling over you more than my roommate at fat camp did in the cafeteria whenever we had cheat day. I wouldn't be surprised if she tried to weasel her way back into your life."

"Han that wouldn't be weaseling. It was awesome catching up with her yesterday, and I mean… I wouldn't be opposed to having her in my life again."

"I'm sorry, what? Do you not remember what she did to you? Because I sure as hell do; after all, I was the shoulder you cried on after the crap she pulled."

"Easy, Han. Don't worry, I didn't forget. In any case I'm sure it doesn't even matter. I probably won't ever see her aga—"

Just as Emily was about to finish her sentence she heard a knock on her open classroom door, taken aback by the sight of Spencer Hastings standing in the doorway. She cocked an eyebrow in curiosity before standing up, brushing off her navy blue pencil skirt and waving the brunette in.

"Em? Em are you still there?"

"Sorry Han, I've gotta go. I'll uhm… I'll call you later," Emily spoke into her phone, not even waiting for the blonde's response before hanging up. She placed her cellphone on her desk and then redirected her attention to Spencer who stood in front of her, casually glancing around Emily's classroom. "You're not like, stalking me are you? I mean I'm flattered, but I don't do creepy."

"Hilarious, Em. Seriously, if teaching doesn't work out, you've got a career in comedy," Spencer responded sarcastically but with a smile on her face. "I'm actually here to pick up my nephew."

"Nephew?" Emily questioned, and Spencer could tell that the teacher was mentally trying to figure out whom Spencer was referring to. "Oh my god, of course Matthew Kahn is Melissa's son. How did I not put two and two together? He's like a mini version of Eric."

"Yep, that's my little buddy," Spencer responded with a smile on his face, thinking of the little boy in question.

"Okay uh, let me just get my stuff, and then I'll go and get him for you. He's just in the other classroom," Emily spoke as she began to look around her desk and pack her belongings into her briefcase. "I didn't know that Melissa and Eric moved to New York. Then again, I haven't seen them for about as long as I hadn't seen you."

"Yeah they just finished getting settled in last night. That's why they weren't at the wedding," Spencer responded with a nod. She couldn't help but let her eyes wander around Emily's desk, noticing that the girl in questioned seemed to be noticeably flustered as she gathered her things. "Uhm if you're busy I can just find Matt myself. I'm sure it won't be the difficult."

"No, no it's okay. Uhm actually, here why don't I just call Ms. Kensington and she can—"

"Ms. Fields! Aunt Spencer!" a voice from the hallway called out, followed by the quick footsteps of a small brown haired boy. Spencer immediately turned around, a smile beaming from her face as she knelt down and opened her arms up.

"Mattman!" Spencer responded, engulfing the boy in her arms and lifting him up, twirling him in the air as Matthew laughed melodically. Emily couldn't help but smile at the sight in front of her. Spencer was always a natural when it came to kids, and watching her interact with them never failed to give her butterflies. After spinning him around a few more times, Spencer gently placed Matthew back down and ruffled his hair, still kneeling so that they were eye level. "There's my favourite superhero. How was your first day, little buddy?"

"Good. Ms. Fields is the best teacher ever," Matthew replied shyly, his kind words bringing a smile to her face. Spencer grinned at the boy, and for the first time she noticed another tiny figure standing right behind him. Spencer's eyes shifted ever so slightly toward the little girl who stood just feet away from them, and her change in attention seemed to spark a realization in Matthew. "Oh! I almost forgot. I made a friend today."

Matthew turned around, waving the little girl over who shyly stepped forward. Spencer briefly looked up at Emily, noticing a look that had suddenly come across her face. Nervousness, was it? She quirked her eyebrow in confusion before turning back to the kids in front of her, the little girl now closer. As she saw the girl close up, Spencer felt her heart skip a beat and her breath catch in her throat.

She knew this girl. She had seen this girl several times before. The long silky black hair, the puffy cheeks with a hint of dimples that appeared with the half grin she gave. Spencer found herself speechless, not knowing what to think of the sight in front of her. It was as though she had stepped into a time machine, bringing her back to when she was four years old. If she didn't know better, she could have sworn she had grown up with the girl in front of her, the only difference being that the girl in front of her had beautifully bright blue eyes. Spencer could feel herself becoming slightly overwhelmed, her weight shifting back so much that she was sitting against the heels of her feet. The little girl now stood directly in front of her, holding her hand out, her smile growing from a half-smile to a full grin.

"Hi. My name is Xaviera Anabella Fields. You're really pretty."

Yep. Like mother, like daughter. Spencer was dazed, her heart beating rapidly because no, Emily didn't have a girlfriend, or a wife. Or maybe she did; Spencer really couldn't be too sure. But what she did know was that Emily had a child - a beautiful spitting image of her. And for the first time in as long as she could remember, Spencer Hastings was truly speechless.

Well, there it is! Needless to say, we're in for a long journey with this sequel, but I promise you it'll be worth it. Please don't forget to leave a review and let me know what you thought. As well, if anyone was wondering, Xaviera's name is pronounced like "Savvy-era". Thank you all so much for reading, you're the best and I love you all!
