A/N: I've been sneaking out on my McGee with this Toby character from Scorpion, but Status Update reminded me of just how sweet my Geek is. Still smiling a day later. Sheila

A Pretty Good Day

He balanced sugar packets and creamers on the coffee in one hand and held his own in the other. He didn't know how she took it, and he wanted to get it just right. He liked her. Always did. She was badass just like Bishop said, and when he was around her, he felt a compulsion to be softer, sweeter- more genuine.

She looked up from her chair when he got there, and he fumbled the drink so badly, he almost spilled it on her, but she was quick, and the only thing that landed in her lap were sugar packets.

"Sorry," he said settling into the chair next to her.

"Why is it taking so long?"

He shrugged. "It's an MRI. It takes a bit. He's fine though. Nothing to worry about. I was there for his last concussion, and he was great after a day or two."

"Repeated head traumas are bad news, Tony!"

He felt the smile creeping back into his face, the one he had back at the condo when his partner was kissing her hello. "Delilah, he's going to be fine."

"You think this is funny?"

"No, I don't," he said.

"You're still smiling."

"I can't help it," he said. He sipped at the stale hospital coffee hoping to mask it better.

"He almost died."

"But he didn't. Instead, he got rescued and then he got the girl. My guess is he's feeling pretty good right now."

"You have no compassion."

Tony chuckled. "I got nothing but compassion for my little buddy, and tonight, I saw such a look on his face like I've never seen before. It just sort of filled my heart. He deserves this more than you'll ever know."

She softened. "He's the best, isn't he?"

"He's the finest quality out there, my dear."

She bit her lip and looked down at her coffee. "He was so good, Tony. He followed Malik's game like a pro."

"He is a pro."

"He told me to shoot him. He just knew there weren't any bullets in the gun."

"I know," he said softly. "You told me that story three times already."

"I guess I'm still a little shaky."

He reached over and took her hand. "I got ya."

"What are you doing, DiNozzo? Moving in on your partner's girl." Gibbs was there, seemingly out of nowhere, a bad cup of coffee in his hand too.

"I got no chance with a dame like this with McHero around."

"I'll say," Gibbs drawled.

"Is nobody worried about him!" She said in exasperation.

Tony looked at Gibbs and laughed. "From where we're standing, our guy had himself a pretty good day."

"Seriously!"

Gibbs grabbed a chair and dragged it over to the other side of her. "When my guys get their bumps and scrapes, I insist on being in the exam room. Right now, your boyfriend has the silliest grin on his bruised up face. I can hardly stand it."

"Really?"

"Yeah. In fact, he just told me that he'd prefer your face to mine right now. So, you better get in there."

She handed Tony her coffee. "That's my cue."

They watched her wheel off down the hall. Tony sighed. "With all we've been through over the years, it feels damn good when one of us gets it right."

Gibbs' mouth twitched. "Yeah. They gotta hold onto it like crazy while it lasts."
