Author's Note: This is set somewhere in the Season 2 finale, but before the big ending, of which I won't spoil here. But this is just something I thought of. I'm not sure if they really had this kind of thing in those days, but I knew I had to do this story. Enjoy!
Elizabeth was just finishing up her day, getting ready to leave when she heard someone come up to the door. She didn't know how she knew, but she knew it would be Jack.
And it was. He opened the door, and smiled his wonderful smile that made her feel safe and warm. She only wished they didn't argue all the time lately. She didn't want to lose his friendship. He was one of the best friends she'd ever had, romantically or not. He'd helped her so much getting used to the town and the people. She could never repay him for that.
But as he came in, she noticed he was carrying a package. Quite a large package, behind his back. She gasped.
"Jack, what's this?"
He came to her then, touched her arm. The sensation felt like they knew each other all their lives and were destined to be together. If only...
"This is just something I thought you should have to hang up here." He whipped the package out, poorly wrapped in a brown paper bag. But she knew she would treasure whatever was inside with all her heart.
As he slowly removed the bag away, she couldn't help but gasp again. For there, in his hands, was a life size picture of her students. The picture that Jack himself took. Elizabeth was speechless.
When she finally managed to say something, she said, "Oh, Jack, this is wonderful! How in the world did you ever do this so quickly?"
"I won't reveal my secrets," Jack said, smiling. "But I had a little help from the store. I knew when we took that picture that it should be hung up. Now, where is a good place?"
They found the perfect spot, and from out of nowhere, Jack produced a hammer, and hammered the picture up. They stood back, admiring it. Elizabeth felt like there was something missing.
"You know when you said we were from two different worlds? I went crazy over that, because that's certainly not true. We're two of a kind, the same person. And you know what we have in common?"
Jack looked at her like a lost puppy. He wasn't prepared to go into this when he brought the gift over. He was already thinking of making an exit, but the look on Elizabeth's face made him stick to the ground. He wouldn't leave her, not ever. He realized she was waiting for an answer to her question.
"What's that?"
Elizabeth smiled and pointed to the picture. "Those students love you as much as they love me. Or at least I think they love me." She smiled. "They ask about you all the time, and whether I'm going to marry you." Elizabeth blushed. She still wasn't over that one.
"And you know what I think? I think you belong in that picture as much as I do. When we took it, I was wondering why you weren't in it yourself."
Jack was genuinely touched at Elizabeth's words. If he didn't know better, he thought she just asked him to marry her. Slowly but with familiar ease, he leaned in for a kiss that was sweeter than anything in the world. He was grateful that he thought of this idea.
He pulled back, breathless, and said, "I think you're right, about the picture. We can retake it tomorrow after school, if you want. I would be more than happy to be in it too."
"There's no rush, Jack. We can take it anytime."
There's no rush. He realized she wasn't just talking about the picture. He leaned in again for another kiss. Yes, he thought, there was no rush.
Elizabeth smiled as they kissed again. She couldn't wait to have the picture retaken. She knew her boys and girls would be overjoyed. And they wouldn't be the only ones, she thought, as Jack offered to walk her home, hand in hand. She couldn't wait to see what the future would hold.
The End
