She said that she couldn't be loved. He thought otherwise.

She said that she was to evil to be loved because of her past. He told her that his past wasn't clean either.

She said that they couldn't be in a relationship because it would put them in too much danger. He said that he would be there to protect her no matter what.

She said she was confused on her feelings for Bruce. He told her that he would wait for her to figure things out, even if it took her a lifetime.

She was letting her wall down slowly but always had her guard up. He didn't mind though.

When they stayed at Clint's farmhouse, he found her outside playing fetch with the dog, Lucky. The solider took a seat next to her and watched as the dog happily came back with the ball and dropped it in her hand, telling her he want her to throw it again.

"Having fun Nat?" he asked.

"Yeah Lucky has been taking care of me." She said with a small smile. He smiled back at her. Steve could tell that there was something brothering her, but he didn't push her to talk. He learned over the years that when she was ready to talk, then she'll talk.

"I saw my past," she said quietly. "The witch showed me when they trained us in ballet to cover up the fact that they were training monsters."

Steve reached over slowly reached over and grabbed the red head's hand and was smiling on the inside when she didn't pull away.

"You're not a monster. You're a beautiful, strong, brave, amazing, woman who had a troubled past; but hey, who here hasn't had a troubled past? Just because she showed you what you were, doesn't mean that you're that way now."

Natasha was at a loss for words; but when has Steve ever said something that didn't take her for surprise? Instead of saying anything, Natasha leaned over and kissed the Captain on the cheek. Maybe that was enough words for now.

Months after Ultron, Natasha enjoyed the time that she spent with Steve. They trained together, ate together, and just spent time together. Sometimes they would just sit in silence and Steve would draw something for her, or his latest thing is to draw her.

"You're my muse to draw, plus you're beautiful." He told her one night. (Natasha didn't know that she could turn the same shade as her hair with only eight words.)

They both knew that their friends knew about their crushes on each other. Sam teased Steve about it every chance he got, while Wanda give Natasha knowing smiles. Rhodes and Vision didn't say much about it; mainly because Rhodes had to make sure Tony stayed out of trouble since retiring and Vision didn't understand human feelings.

So it didn't surprise Steve when Sam and Wanda pushed him and Natasha in the smallest closet they can find, in order to get them to talk. He was pushed up against the wall and Natasha was literally standing on his feet and they were chest to chest.

"This was they're way of setting us up."

"I see."

"I do like you Natasha." Steve admitted. "You're brave, smart, have a great heart, and beautiful."

"I like you too Steve, but do you want to be with me? I'm unfixable in so many ways. I will always have red on ledger no matter what I do. I done so many horrible things I don't deserve to be loved. You deserve someone better you for..." Steve looked at her in shock as she said those things about herself. Didn't this woman know how great she was? Because he had enough of her degrading herself Steve leaned down and kissed her, on the lips, just to shut her up. It didn't take long before the spy kissed him back and on the inside Steve was doing backflips that the woman he loved was kissing him back. All too soon he broke the kiss and looked straight into her green eyes.

"You deserve to be loved in so many ways. You've been things that you're not proud of, so what? We all did things that we're no proud of Natasha. You say I deserve someone better and I'm looking right at her. You're the love that I thought I would never feel again after being in ice for seventy years. I'm going to wait as long as you need me too, to admit to yourself that you deserve to be loved. Natasha I love you and you don't have to say it back now, or tomorrow, or weeks afterward. I just want you to know. As someone once told me "Trust thyself; every heart vibrates to that iron string."

"You got that from Ralph Waldo Emerson." She said with a laugh causing the solider to smile brightly at her.

"I know, but what it means is that you know that you're good enough, even better for me. It's I who doesn't deserve you."

Tears were in her eyes as she nodded her head and leaned in to kiss him again. Once she broke the kiss and wiped the tears that were on her cheeks, they found a way to get Steve to sit on the floor and Natasha on his lap. Together they talked about everything and everything until she fell asleep with her head on his shoulder and arms around his waist. It felt like forever before their friends let them out, and they smiled at the sight and high fived each other.

"Don't get too happy," Steve pointed out once he was standing up with a still sleeping Natasha in his arms. "She might kill you guys in the morning." Sam and Wanda froze at the thought and Steve smirked to himself as he carried his red head to his room.

She might kill them or thank them.

She told herself that she couldn't be love and he proved her wrong.

She told him that her past was to evil to be loved and he told her that his past wasn't clean either and that they could work on their future together.

She said that they couldn't be in a relationship because it would put them in too much danger. He said that he would be there to protect her no matter what. The missions they had together proved he would protect her no matter what. From bullets to bombs and everything in between.

She wasn't confused about her feelings with Bruce anymore because she knew she was in love with Steve.

She finally let her wall down all the way and he stepped over that wall slowly so he didn't push her too far.

The spy grew from a self-loathing woman who thought she didn't deserve love into a woman who welcomes her friends close to her heart.

Natasha smiled as she held her new family member James Rogers in her arms and smiled at her husband, who kissed her temple and smiled down at his son. This was the start to a better life for the both of them.
