Ever since he can remember his life had been nothing but masks.

The mask of a good son when at home, made up of nothing but sweet smiles and obedient nods was the first mask he ever wore. This, along with an air of childish innocence, was what he used to complete his image as the perfect son. Neither his parents nor his suffocatingly overbearing guardian for the rest of his year in Tokyo have caught on to this ruse; and that's exactly how he wants it.

At school he plays the role of the 'mysterious transfer student'. This mask is not entirely dissimilar. In this instance, his mask is crafted from neatly combed hair, perfectly presented uniform and just the right amount of muttered replies and 'nervous' fidgeting to give him the appearance of the perfectly shy 'Straight A' student.
His teachers adore him, and his fellow students ignore him. And that's exactly how he wants it, or so he tells himself.

The third mask he wears is one painstakingly constructed from hours upon hours of listening to his social links' problems with their love lives or their family or whatever new problem they're facing this week. Carved into this particular mask, is a kind smile and ears that are always there to listen. This mask is the most tedious of all to wear, but luckily it isn't long lasting. As soon as he and whomever the other party happens to be hit Rank 10, they hardly ever speak to each other again. And that's exactly how he wants it, or so he tries to convince himself.

His fourth and final mask is his most treasured, one that he wears not only metaphorically, but literally, the mask of the notorious Phantom Thief. This is the only mask in his collection he didn't craft by himself, he had let the media do it for him. He let them paint the public a picture of the 'Phantom Thief' as they saw fit; and what a picture it was. He is revered by many for his sheer audacity and feared by even more for his methods. And that's exactly how he wants it, or at least that's what he tries to make himself believe.

Truly, every aspect of his life has been and always will be a mask in some way. Maybe that's why when Arsène whispers to him, promising freedom along with all manner of physical treasures and giving him the power to burn away all those masks, he truly feels like himself again.
