Wedding Woes

Petunia hated weddings. There was absolutely no point to them, she decided. What was the point in have a lavish ceremony to profess your commitment and undying love for someone when you didn't even get to choose who you loved?

Oh, of course Lily was happy though. Lily always got what she wanted. Petunia vividly remembered the letters her sister sent home through all of her seventh year, going from "I can't believe he's my soulmate" to "he's the most wonderful man I've ever met" in the span of a few months.

Meanwhile Petunia had been stuck at home, agonizing every day over why she hadn't found her soulmate yet when she'd spoken to nearly every boy at school, not to mention at work.

She was still single by the time Lily's wedding rolled around. It was sickening it sit amongst so many happy couples and pretend to be thrilled that her sister was one of them. The groomsmen made it worse. She'd very carefully avoided all contact with anyone magical aside from her sister and brother-in-law. By the time she met the best man, they were already being shoved down the aisle and hadn't had time for introductions.

So of course once the ceremony was over and the reception was under way, Lily and James stormed over to her with the best man in tow.

"Petunia!" James called giddily. She resisted the urge to roll her eyes at his excitement. "This is my best friend."

"I'm more like his brother," the man said with a grin.

"Very true. We're almost twins," James agreed.

"Sirius Black," Lily interrupted, shaking her head at the pair. "Meet my sister, Petunia."

The man grabbed Petunia's hand before she'd even extended it. He bent, about to press his lips to the back of her hand when the warmth spread throughout her body. He must have felt it too, because he froze and his eyes drifted up to meet hers.

Petunia was aware of Lily's and James' eyes watching them closely and suddenly felt self-conscious. She roughly pulled her hand away and stood back from the stranger.

He cleared his throat and straightened up, absently rubbing the hand that had held hers.

"Well, Petunia, it was a pleasure meeting you," he said quietly.

"Sirius, are you alright?" James asked.

"Uh, yeah, I'm just great."

"Oh, Merlin," Lily gasped, a smile creeping onto her face as she looked back and forth between them. Petunia's stomach lurched. "You two felt it, didn't you? You're soulmates!"

Sirius and Petunia groaned simultaneously.

"No offence, but I didn't really expect my soulmate to be a …" He trailed off when James elbowed him.

"I know the feeling," she told him, scowling.

He sighed, eying the dance floor as the music changed to a slow song.

"Well. I suppose I should be grateful. I mean you're very beautiful."

She blinked at him. She hadn't been called beautiful since she was nine, and that had been by her granny. "You think so?"

"Of course. So, Miss Evans, care to dance?"

Waving off her sister's irritating giggles, Petunia once again offered her hand to Sirius Black, allowing him to lead her onto the dance floor.

"Promise me something?" she asked as he began to twirl them both.

"Yes?"

"Promise me that our wedding will be just as lovely as this one."

He grinned, brushing a strand of hair from her forehead. "Of course."
