Disclaimer: I do not own Percy Jackson or any of it's characters.
AN: THIS IS THE LAST CHAPTER! Because I'm sure you all want to get to the story, I'll have a little note at the end but I wanted to thank everyone for reading and reviewing. THE BOYS ARE BACK is the sequel to this story, please check it out!
Thalia was a wreck until she disappeared to inform Artemis, coming back with a blank look until she didn't even flinch when they said her name. Emily died during the fight because she was strong enough to be a distraction, strong enough to protect all of them instead of running away like she had the chance to do. The entire school forgot she existed quickly and the others just had hazy memories besides Nico and Hazel. The night after it happened they sat on the roof to wave goodbye, smiling as they watched her constellation appear besides Zoë's. "I think she'd like knowing this is all the recognition she got. She never was one for standing out."
"Remember when you started a prank war? She was so mad when Thalia accidentally got her instead of Percy, she refused to come out of her room for three days. Thalia had to sleep on the couch!" Nico laughed quietly as he let the cool air ease his sadness away. "I heard Thalia say that she was one of the first hunters, she was told she could either serve Zeus or Artemis because she was a criminal. She tried to save her sister and boyfriend because they said something wrong to the wrong person."
"I know. She told me about it when we talked about our pasts lives together. She said the only person who ever really understood was Zoë, best friends to the grave and to the stars." She blew a kiss to the night sky before turning to head back inside. "It's not our right to mourn her anymore, we need to get some sleep."
They were all a complete and utter mess. Robes were being thrown on, caps were being decorated hazardously on the kitchen table and speeches were being prepared. Somehow Annabeth had gotten roped into "saying a few words" and calling out the names of every graduate, she was completely and utterly terrified. "I still have no idea what I'm going to say. I mean, what do you say to a group of kids leaving for the greatest adventure of their lives?" Percy was trying to get her to breathe while also struggling to put on his graduation robe.
"Yeah because yesterday wasn't enough of an adventure for everyone…" She was still bitter; she knew that Emily had lived a longer life than most expected but it still pissed her off that she never got to graduate high school.
Everyone who was graduating and the few allowed to help were at Sally's, filling the already small apartment. Sally was huge as it was, seven months into her pregnancy and waddling around while being tended to hand and foot. "If you use that tone in this home one more time young lady, I will not attend graduation." Thalia shut up quickly as everyone turned to glare at her. "Good." She sighed as she moved over to fix Percy's robes because that boy couldn't just wear clothes correctly, turning to Annabeth after she was done and brandishing a ladle that appeared out of nowhere. "You are one of the wisest people I know. But you are also incredibly stubborn to the point of hating to admit you were wrong, impulsive to the point where you somehow out do my son and sweetie, you can not cook for shit." The ladle returned to its rightful spot in a vase on the counter. "Do you know what those things combined mean? They mean you can do anything you set your mind to and you can get out of the mess just as quickly. The cooking comment was to remind you just who wears the apron in your relationship."
Hazel laughed as she left the living room to check on the other six. Chris was ready to go and asleep on the couch, his poor girlfriend trying to wake him up while Travis just laughed. "You guys do realize we're leaving as soon as Percy and Annabeth get their shit together." Apparently not.
She almost felt bad for the people at the door trying to seat everyone; having a party of twenty two was a little hard to work around. She almost expected the girl to cry when they said it was okay to split them up. Sally would sit with the demigods and the families could get separated out since they had only just recently met each other. Mr. Chase and Annabeth's step family were seated closer to us than the others, smiling in greeting when we saw them before going back to making sure her brothers were seated quietly. Bobby's arm was still in a sling from the accident but Matthew was healed for the most part in terms of physical injuries. Because of the injury to his head, his twin couldn't remember anything but Matt...he wasn't so lucky.
After the teachers spoke and the senator for the state made some comments about how the kids before him were going to change the world, each student was called to the stage for their diploma. Once the last name was called, it was Annabeth's turn. We got weird stares for cheering our support when she stepped forward but it made her smile. Percy raised his hand to sign something I couldn't see.
"As you can see, I had a lot of help on this speech." There was a nervous twinge to her voice but when the audience chuckled, she relaxed a little. "My name is Annabeth Chase. I have only been at Goode one year, but I've heard about it from friends who went here. Rachel Dare, Percy Jackson. I even visited the campus once, but that didn't end well." She waved to Paul who just crossed his arms, her smile growing. "I don't know everyone here and I'm not going to pretend to. You might have seen me present to classes, seen me in the learning center helping people with homework or getting assistance myself." She took a deep breath, looking out at us before focusing on Percy and him alone. Her eyes wouldn't waver for the rest of the speech. "When I leave this building, I will go to a party where my family will scream and make a mess of the house that will be a pain to clean. Some of you will be there with me. Everyone else will go to dinners, your own parties with your own families or maybe you'll take a nap because that's really what we all need. Because we've worked hard, it doesn't matter if you have a 4.2 or a 2.5 GPA. It doesn't matter if you went to tech school or stayed at Goodie for all of your school days because you worked to get where you needed to be. And because of that, we're going to where we want to be. I want to be a greater architect than my mother and so I'm going to NYU. I want to leave something that's going to stand for a thousand years, something archaeologists are going to see and know a million things about us from. And you all...you're going to go out in the world, just as terrified and unprepared as I am. But that's okay, because where's the fun in feeling safe? You might not change the world, you might not want to leave something permanent. But you'll do something great. You'll be a great parent, a great worker, a great person. So, class of 2011. Turn your tassels to the left, and prepare to do something great. WE DID IT!" It was the first time Hazel had ever seen Annabeth do the little knee high dance thing, but it was soon over as the caps flew and she charged off the stage to tackle Percy in a hug.
"Is this what it's going to be like when we graduate?" She didn't realize it was such a heavy question. They were only required to be at Goodie for one year, some of them might not be returning. "What are we going to do?"
"I want to stay." Her brother was always quiet, his voice cracking like even that was too much for him. But this time it was strong. "I like going to school here." Yeah, she could see herself graduating from here.
She was getting swung around by someone large and it was hard to tell who it was. When she pulled away her jaw dropped as she saw Frank with his military cut and a cocky smile. "Hey, I'm so proud of you." If she wasn't crying she was then. He had been gone for basic training and it had been a year of missed calls, short messages and being on facetime until midnight. He was stronger, more confident and gods damn it was he hot in his uniform. "Haze?"
"You didn't tell me?!" She tried to be angry or at least look like it, but she was back in his arms faster than her heart could beat. She had missed him more than anything in the world, there was nothing that could… "I love you so much and I am definitely going to catch up with you in the apartment tonight…" She kissed him again. "...but there is something I need to see to, cousin stuff." Hug after hug before finally getting to the person she was looking for, dragging him away from the mass of family that arrived to celebrate. "I can feel it in your jacket, you can't lie to me. Are you going to do it tonight?"
Her cousin blushed darkly as he pulled out a ring box, shyly showing it to her. The design was so them that it made her heart twist in want. For that kind of love, for that kind of security in knowing you were going to be okay. "I have a trip planned. We're going to Florence, Italy. It's one of the most romantic cities in the world and...It has great acruitecture, I thought that that would be the best backdrop for a proposal." Percy was beaming more than Will. She had never seen his eyes clear of the cracks and broken pieces, he had already seen too much when they first met. But today...today she could almost see dolphins playing in the sea blue of his eyes. "She's going to say yes, right?"
"Of course she is. She's been hinting at it for three months, you did notice the ring on her left hand right?" He wasn't the same old Percy, that was what made highschool so great. None of them were the same. They were great.
Final Author's Note: This story has been a roller coaster for me and I hope for all of you, as much as I love you all a little emotional pain is a sign of a good author. I hope this is a story that you save and reread when you're feeling nostalgic or have way too much time on your hands. I will be rewriting chapters 1-19 because I haven't gotten to them yet, but otherwise this story is done. THE BOYS ARE BACK is the sequel to this story, please check it out!
