A Wish Across the Stars

Lady Countryrose

Ch. 14

Hermione and Tom had been avoiding each other for most of the day. Since the outburst that he had laid out for her. It sure was enough for her to get lost within her own thoughts.

'Am I ready to be a mother,' she had asked herself. 'Yet alone, a mother to dragons! What am I going to do,' as tears leaked out of her eyes.

After Tom had burned/dug out a room. He had gone off. Getting far away from her outrageous emotional outbursts. At least they were from her own point-of-view.

She was afraid to even try to imagine any number of possibilities of children they were going to have. She could tell from his tone of voice earlier. He was worried, but she didn't know why. Then again. She had never heard of a dragon/human children before.

'Is it something that I should be worried about,' she asked herself. When her eyes glanced down. Only to see her growing stomach was growing at an alarming rate. 'I just hope none of them come out, opening me up from the inside out!' Feeling her body shivering from such horrific images.

Outside Tom wasn't dealing with things very well. He had been able to not think of things. When he was digging new rooms for their growing family. He just didn't know what to expect, which made him worried.

A part of him wanted to go out and burn things. Knowing that Hermione may not talk to him for a lifetime. If he had gone out to kill/maim/destroy things.

'Why did she have to be my mate,' he asked himself. Not the first time that day. He really didn't want to hurt her. 'Not even our world. Was there a human/dragon matting.'

He looked over his shoulder. Only to see that mouth of the cave that he had been digging out. He knew that he needed to go out and get something for dinner. Not just because his mate needed to eat. But so do their growing family.

He took a deep breath in his nose. Only to smell Hermione's distress. He could only imagine that she was not taking the information that he had given her...very well.

"It can't be helped," he stated to the open air in a huffed whisper. Tom then turned towards the area in front of him.

After what felt like a few hours from when Tom had left Hermione upon the nest alone. He came swaggering back in his human form. Causing Hermione to sit up and scooted her back against the wall. Where she could see him move around the stone enclosed home.

She could see his precise movements. Like the predator that he was. She almost see his muscles ripped under his covered skin. Making her shiver, knowing what power he held. Not just a dragon. But also a man.

Tom made his way towards one side of the room. Where he had made a fireplace, placing a couple of rabbits down upon a clean surface. He looked around before he found what he was looking for. Which was a cauldron and a knife.

"What are you doing," asked Hermione in a soft voice. Looking like she was trying to figure him out.

"Trying to make a hearty stew, my little witch," he purred out with an edge of danger in his tone. Letting her know that he was not in a mood to continue in any argument.

"Can I help?"

It was then he looked up. Only to see her brown eyes looking at him with pleading. That it nearly overwhelmed him with emotions that he didn't know what to do with. All he could say was, 'yeah.' Knowing it may be enough for her to feel like she wasn't doing nothing around their new home.

It was then that he picked up the cauldron and carried it closer to her. Then went around the cave to find carrots, potatoes that he had found all over the island. Before bringing them to her.

It was when Tom realized. After seeing Hermione peeling and cutting vegetables. That he saw that Hermione could do things. Even while she was resting. It was with a great sigh that he said, "I guess...you can do things… Even while you're resting…"

Hermione looked up, only showing the most illuminating smiles that he had ever seen in any life time. It nearly made him believe that he was dealing with an angel.

"Thanks...Tom," she spoke with a whisper that corseted his very soul. Causing a shiver to run down his spine.

He had taken a deep breath. As he watched as things began to cook. "I...am just used to people...listening to me…"

Hermione couldn't help but giggle. "No, you're just used to people doing what you tell them to," she shook her head. She had taken a deep breath. "I'm scared," she whispered softly. Knowing that he would be able to hear her.

"I know...my little witch, but you're not alone." He looked into her deep brown eyes. Hoping that she would see the truth. "I'm afraid as well, since you're carrying our future within you. That I fear...neither of us could see them all grow…"

Hermione looked into his eyes. Seeing the fear that was clear as day. "What do you mean, Tom? Aren't dragons hard to kill?"

"They are," he nodded. "But since you are my mate… I could easily die...when you do…"

It was the first time that Hermione had put everything together in her head. All the thought that he could have seen within his own. Making her shiver in her spot, as she leaned against the cavern wall. 'He doesn't want me to be the reason that he dies…'

"Now you know," he spoke with a whisper of pain, sorrow, and hint of love. He then stood up and walked towards another area of the cave. Where she could feel him shift before more heat and rock were moved about another part of the cave.

It was at this rare moment in Hermione's life that she had nothing to counter the thought process of Tom's.
