"Maura! Over here!" Addison screamed as soon as she saw her new friend in the middle of the crowd of loud teenagers. Talking to people who weren't in the cheerleading squad on the school's halls during the breaks wasn't a common habit the redhead had, on the contrary. But she was so tired of all her cheerleader "friends". They were shallow and arrogant. They were stupid and only cared about money. On more than one occasion she thought that one of them would make a better daughter to her mother than herself, since her mother was all of those things.
Saving lives, specially babies' lives, was Addison's dream so Med school was the perfect fit for her. She knew she would have to work her ass off to land a spot in Columbia University of Physicians and Surgeons, one of the most renowned colleges in the country and at the same time that she was worried she wasn't going to be able to pull it off she was very confident.
When she told the girls in the squad about said dream they were all shocked, like "work" was a bad word, dirty even. They just wanted to get married to rich guys and spend their money on things they probably wouldn't need.
Everything was different with Jane and Maura, though. Addison felt free and understood whenever she was with both of them. The brunette once said that "work builds character" and the redhead couldn't have agreed more to that statement. Her mother had never worked a day in her life and Addison always promised herself that her life would be completely different.
"Addison?"
Maura was relieved to see Addison in the middle of the hall. It had been a whole month since school started but she was still getting used to the schedule, to the noise, to the people… There was just too much for her liking, but she was glad to finally have friends to help her through her journey.
The blonde's voice made way through all the loud noise and brought Addison back to reality. The girl smile wholeheartedly and shook all of her problems and thoughts away. She could worry about them later.
"Sorry, got lost for a second." The redhead put one of her arms around Maura's shoulder, directing her towards their History class. "I honestly can't wait to go to college and leave all these crazy people behind."
"Do you think it'll be much different from this?" Maura chuckled lightly.
"Well, I surely hope so." Addison laughed, shaking her entire body. "Oh look, there's Jane and Barry." Her laughter turned into a warm smile as she waved to get her friend's attention.
The small group had grown together quite a bit during that first month. They would go out after school, they would hang out on the weekends and like that wasn't enough already, Skype calls were also a thing between all of them. They liked each other immensely, but most importantly, they needed each other to laugh with, to share life with and to grow with.
"Yo, Addison's hair is on fire!" Frost tried to maintain his serious face but as soon as he got Maura to snort he couldn't hold himself, letting his own laughter fill his ears. Barry loved jokes. He always said that he was the Chandler Bing of the gang, expect for the entire "makes jokes when uncomfortable" thing.
"Oh, shut up, Barry." Even though Addison's tone was sharp, a gleam in her eyes told him she wasn't being serious. She loved that harmless banter, it reminded her of the good times with her older brother, Archer, before he became an insufferable pain in the ass. Now they were just civil whenever they saw each other. "We better hurry if we want to get seated together"
History was the only class the group had together and they loved not only that but the subject itself and the teacher. Mr. Morningstar was the best example of the perfect teacher; he was incredibly handsome, always well dressed - not to mention he always smelled like heaven - and he taught all the events like he witnessed them himself. And the best part - at least to Maura and Addison - was that he always asked for advice regarding a woman named Chloe with whom he was absolutely in love with but had no clue whatsoever of that fact.
"Good morning, not so little humans." He had a devilish smile as he look at his students. In the beginning he used to hate his position and he used to be rude to pretty much everyone in school. But over the years he got softer and softer and now the students believed he actually cared about all of them. "Please gather yourselves in groups of 4 or 5. I won't be giving you a test but a group project instead - which is in someway a sort of test. Chloe said that team work is essential and since she told me I must learn it so must you."
"We can go to my place after class to get started, if that's okay with your parents." Addison said as she put her red tresses into a ponytail. "The sooner we start it, the sooner we'll be done with it and be able to focus on the massive party I'm throwing 2 weeks from now." Mr. Morningstar raised an eyebrow at her comment and before he could say anything, the girl added. "Not that this team work is not important and shouldn't be taken completely serious, because it totally should."
"I must disagree with you on that, Ms. Montgomery. Parties are always more important than academic obligations, specially when there's good music and whiskey. One day you'll all be able to come to a party at Lux and you'll see what I'm talking about. And if you don't wait until then, you can always get fake IDs." He smirked "But you did not hear that from me, of course."
"So, Barry, would you rather be hungry and never be able to satisfy yourself or…." Addison smirked "…be virgin forever?"
The four of them were scattered around the redhead's living room eating popcorn and drinking milkshake. They had tried to work on their project for five minutes before Barry suggested they played a round of "Would You Rather?" And now they were on their tenth round and the project was long forgotten.
"Well, since I'm still a virgin I wouldn't miss something I never had, y'a know. So I'd rather be one forever than never get the pleasure eating food gives me. I mean, have you ever gotten than blissful sensation when you finally eat after starving for hours? That beats anything." Frost said as she plopped one popcorn into his mouth. He was kind of old fashioned when it came to sex; he wanted to wait for the right girl so he could have a good memory of his first time.
"I can only say that your opinion might change once you try sex." Maura shrugged, still laughing at her friend. She blushed almost instantly, only noticing her words after they had already left her lips. Not that she was a prude or anything, she just wasn't used to talking about that particular subject with anyone. The blonde used to go to an all girls school in England, for Christ's sake. No one would talk about sex, no one would even think about it.
Jane nearly chocked on her milkshake with Maura's statement. Of course Maura wasn't a virgin anymore, with those looks and that sweet, sweet hear. What was she expecting? Actually, why would she expect anything like that from her? She had a feeling in the pit of her stomach that she couldn't quite understand and it was making her feel incredibly uncomfortable. She just assumed it was the conversation itself. You see, sex was a very touchy subject in the Rizzoli household so Jane would rather pretend that it didn't even exist.
"Sex causes increased production of oxytocin, which is often referred to as the love hormone." Maura added. "It's anti-aging, immune-boosting and stress-reducing. Not that I have done anything like that, it's only what I know from the biological studies I have read. They're very insightful." Feeling more relaxed, Maura lies down on the soft carpet bringing the bowl of popcorn to rest on her flat stomach.
"It's my turn to ask now, isn't it?" Barry asked from his place on the couch next to Jane. He had a few options of questions but he thought they would be too disgusting to ask girls, so he finally settled with the lightest of them. "Maura, would you rather sleep with a boy or kiss a girl?"
"Oh my god, you perv!" Addison laughed, standing up to get a refill of her chocolate milkshake. She never understood the obsession that boys had with the idea of two girls making out. At first she thought it was a phase, that it was simply childish curiosity. But as the boys she kew grew up, so did their so called fascination.
"I'd rather kiss a girl. They're much more delicate and passionate than boys." Maura answered bluntly before Jane could say that she didn't need to answer it if she was too uncomfortable with the question. "That I know for a fact." She winked at Frost and both him and Addison laughed again.
"Can we play something else?" Jane chimed in, her rebel curls spread on a decorative pillow behind her on the couch. Everything was getting way too sexual for her liking and she just wanted it to stop without ruining everyone's fun. " I don't know, a board game or something? This is getting boring." She puffed a strand of hair out of her eyes.
The rest of the afternoon went on smoothly with lots of different games and lots of laughter. When night finally fell, they all called their parents - and in Maura's case, Dorotha- to let them know that they would be sleeping over at Addison's.
"I suck at choosing movies, so I'll leave that to you." Addison said as the plopped on one of the recliners. It was her favorite spot in all the living room. It and its identical twin had been a gift from her grandfather, the one person she loved the most in the entire world. He had died a few years back and since then Addie had found comfort between its arms.
They spent over an hour going from cover to cover on Netflix trying to decide on a movie they wanted to watch and when they finally did, they were just too tired to watch the entire thing. Everyone was asleep ten minutes into the movie, except for Addison. The redhead had trouble sleeping since she was just a child and it took her at least half an hour to feel sleepy.
As she looked around the poorly lit living room, feeling her lids getting heavier and heavier, her gaze fell upon Maura and Jane asleep next to each other on the couch. Maura's hand was placed across Jane's stomach and the brunette's hand rested on top of it. Addison smiled knowingly at the two of them as she drifted off to sleep.
