And Then there were three
1.
Lee threw the large pink hold-all onto the sofa as Lucy carried the baby into the flat. The little bit slept peacefully as Lucy set the car seat on the sofa before looking around the flat.
"It looks the same."
"Of course it does." Lee smiled at her. "We've only been out a few hours."
"Yeah." Lucy nodded. "But we didn't have the baby when we left, did we? I mean meeting your dad for a quick drink wasn't supposed to end up with us hiding in the grotto with a madman with a gun chasing us and me going into labour."
"True."
"We can't really call him Snowy. Tim had a rabbit called Snowy when we were kids." She sat on the sofa, gazing at her sleeping baby. "Frank isn't such a bad name."
"No."
"Ok, Geoffrey?"
"No, he needs his own name." Lee sat next to her. "He needs his own identity, not Tim, Lee, Frank or Geoffrey."
"Maybe Mum will have an idea. She's coming over in the morning."
"Jack."
"What?"
"Jack." Lee smiled. "Like Jack in the Beanstalk? He was nearly born while his mum climbed a Christmas tree. Sort of like a beanstalk - but more festive." Lucy rolled her eyes.
"Ok, Jack it is."
The baby stirred as Lucy yawned. Lee very carefully picked him out of the baby seat and held him carefully.
"Right, well enough of that." He soothed the crying baby. "If you don't like the name Jack you can change it when you're older. I'm your dad. Sorry, you're sort of stuck with me too." The baby quietened in his arms as he spoke. Lucy smiled slightly, watching the two most important men in her life. "I would say I'm not as daft as I look but you mum would correct me. I'm pretty useless at most things but I have got an ice cream van so that'll give you a bit of street cred in primary school." The baby opened his eyes watching Lee intensely. "Lucy, that's your mum reckons I don't have to be a crap father like my old man was. I might be. It's early days, I'm not promising anything yet."
"Lee."
"But I will be around." Lee continued. "I promise you that. I'll be here for you and your mum. I will embarrass you and will get stuff wrong but I will be here." The baby settled, closing his eyes as he fell asleep.
"Lee?" Lucy got to her feet as he stared at the baby.
"Yeah?"
"It'll be ok. The three of us. We will be ok." She smiled.
"No Lucy." He held her gaze. "No, Lucy we'll be better than ok. We'll be perfect." He kissed her firmly on the lips, knowing he meant every word.
