Foot steps clattered soundlessly against the tiled roof, hushed whispers darted back and forward as prying ears tried to catch where the subtle hints of a voice came from. Yet they never seemed to find what they were looking for.
The cold breeze was unyielding, the harshness of the winter air was like needles piercing through the skin.
Any citizens that were still roaming the streets were heavily bundled up, teeth chattering and body shivering from the cold. This cold would surely be the death of them, is what they thought, carelessly running through the streets to get back to their warm homes, ignoring the shivering shadows in the alleyway, huddle together for a merger sense of warmth. The youths of the group stared worriedly at their sickly companion, who grew paler and icier by the minute.
A quiet rhythmic tapping against the pavement could be heard, a clicking accompanied by it. Two tall figures walked side by side, arms brushing occasionally. Most assumed they were a couple, but thought it was odd they way they interacted. Their attire was even stranger. They were not protected or covered head to toe, in fact whatever thick layer of warmth they had was carried in a form of a messily rolled up lump. All they worse was simple trench coats, their jacket's thicker layer was in their hands, people thought they were surely mad.
Prancing around in such cold temperatures with such little amount of clothing would surely get them sick, yet they kept walking, faces pinched with pink, eyes glazed over with determination of sorts.
A youth, a female at the age of 9 heard movements coming towards them from around the corner, causing her position to shift defensively, the rest of the children joining her in hiding their sick friend, however their tense positions relaxed at the sight of the tall duo, who handed them the large warm coats that were rolled up.
"It isn't much, but it will keep you all warm for the night." The female whispered before handing a small pouch over. "This should be enough for the medicine you will need for your friend, as well as some food." The child accepted the gifts, eyes glinting with tears as a shaky smile spread across her dirtied cheeks. "Oh miss! Thank you so much, but..we can't accept this. We could never be able to repay you." The silent male shook his head, "We want nothing in return, all we want is for you to be safe and protect yourselves."
The young girl was speechless, complete strangers were so willing to help them and wish for nothing in return. Nodding slowly, she passed the money to the eldest of their group, a boy of the age of 14, who kept it safely hidden away from any possible thieves as she passed the now unrolled jackets to the other orphans who shared it with another, already feeling much warmer than they were before.
The woman smiled gently before standing up straight and bidding the children a good night before disappearing out the entrance of the alley, accompanied by the man. The girl quickly stood up and raced over to where the duo disappeared, only to find the side walks completely deserted of any form of life, causing her to blink in confusion until something flashed past her line a vision, making the girl sharply turn only to come face to face with a white feather that came cascading down, a light grey one soon following it. The girl looked up with a hopeful smile, before whispering,
"My guardian angel."
