Winds of Change
I. It was Aunt Jill's Idea
It was like those cheesy pocketbooks that her mother used to read. The one where the girl and the boy meet, they hate each other they fall in love. Natalie was certainly beautiful. She was nice enough. She couldn't judge the other woman properly as she didn't know her well-enough. The story of them having that 'hate at first sight' wasn't so bad if it wasn't so teenage romance-y for her taste. But was it really too much for a daughter to get a short notice of a, 'hey, I'm dating a woman and its getting serious' before springing up the whole, 'I'm getting married' to her.
"You know, Annie, you should be happy for your dad." It was her Aunt Jill who confronted her after a week of her cold shoulder.
"Aunty, he's marrying some… some tramp!" Annie groaned. She felt bad for calling Natalie a 'tramp'. She was certainly nice - if you ignore the 'other woman' part of the story. "He didn't even tell me beforehand. I mean, I tell him all my shenanigans, when I go to dates, what my date was like and all those, why didn't he return my sentiment."
Aunt Jill just shook her head, patting the forlorn young woman's head. "Ah well. You're dad seems serious with this one."
"Aunty, it was so sudden." She deadpanned. "One day he was his usual self, the next he tells me that he's getting married. I never even knew the woman."
"Natalie's nice. I knew her before. She used to live here too, you know. She's Elliot's older sister." Aunt Jill said. "Besides, your mom knew her too. They were friends, I think."
"Aunty, aren't you the slightest disapproving of this?" Annie asked. "I mean, it's like he's forgotten mom already."
"Honey, I know your dad. And I know for certain that he still loves my stupid sister." Aunt Jill gave a sigh. She wore that nostalgic smile she wears when she talks about her sister, Annie's mom. Annie looked like her mother but with her father's hair. It was what the people in their island loved to say. "But fact is, he deserves to move on. It's been ten years, Annie. Chelsea would've wanted him to move on. Besides, I know Natalie. She's a nice girl. I mean, she left the island before you were born but she was nice enough when I got to know her."
Her face twisted into an ugly look. "I don't want him to move on." She said, ignoring the last part. "Ollie would agree with me, you know."
"Speaking of, where's your brother?" Jill asked, changing the subject.
"Still travelling, I guess." She answered, unsure. "He said he had some work that he needed to finish at the city before he could travel. He'll be here tonight, though."
"He better. The wedding's tomorrow and I didn't spend five hours in a ship just for it to end in a disaster." Aunt Jill said.
"You know, Uncle Jack would've understood my sentiment." She muttered, not derailed.
"Actually, Jack is quite happy for your father. Unfortunately, he can't cross the country for this wedding because Mary's pregnant." Aunt Jill gave a smirk at the disgruntled look on her face. "Stop acting childish, Anita. You are twenty one, start acting like your age. Also… try to be happy for your father. He deserves it."
Annie didn't say anything for a while. Then, she sighed and sprawled on the bed. "I can't stay here, you know. I mean, I love the island and I love everyone but I just can't stay here right now."
"I'm not going to invite you to stay with me." Aunt Jill said immediately. "Honestly, Sweetie, you are my favorite niece but you aren't saddling with me."
"I wouldn't want to anyway." She denied. "I love you too, Aunty, but living together with you, Uncle Gray and Philip? Yeah, no thanks. Forget-Me-Not-Valley's too backwater for me – yeowch!"
Aunt Jill smiled down at her, her hand poised for another strike. "I'm sorry, Sweetie, care to repeat that?"
"I mean, Forget-Me-Not-Valley definitely isn't backwater and has the second best farm in the world, cared by the greatest aunt in the world." She recited. "The best farm is still Iselia farm."
"You'd say that, you biased brat." Aunt Jill shook her head with a smile.
Annie sat back up and rubbed her eyes with the heel of her palm. "Still, I've lived here all my life. I didn't finish any fancy higher education like Ollie did. I stayed here and helped with the farm. It's all I know and I love that life. But I can't live here with someone not-mom making goo-goo eyes at my dad."
"'Goo-goo eyes?'" Aunt Jill snickered.
"You know what I mean."
"Well, I may have something that'll help." That got her attention. "You know about the Zephyr's Grand Bazaar."
"Yeah." She nodded. "Mom and Dad used to take us there during the summer. But last I heard, they got into a slump and nearly all their shops closed down."
Aunt Jill gave a smirk.
"Wait, you can't be saying—"
"Hey, saving towns is sort of a family business." She grinned. "I mean, look at who you are related to – on the mother side, I mean. The mother side is the only cool one."
"Dad would say that's not true." She smiled, the idea getting more and more attractive as she think about it.
"Well, Jack did visit the farm there once. It's empty but not as bad as Iselia when it was starting. Heck, it's clean compared to how Jack's or mine used to be before we took it up. The soil there isn't so bad, either. And according to him, Mary loved the place - but she loves Forget-Me-Not-Valley too much to move out."
"I'll think about it." She said.
"You know, when your mom took up the farm here, she never told anyone." Jill picked an imaginary lint on her skirt. "But I think you should at least tell your brother – we wouldn't want Ollie to worry now, do we?"
Final Notes: This is the first chapter of my rather ambitious story - Winds of Change. The story incorporates the whole 'other MC' as a whole family. Jill - my name for Claire, the blonde farmer of MFoMT and DS: Cute owns a farm in Forget-Me-Not-Valley and is married to Gray - and also have a child named Philip (male MC from ToTT) while her twin brother is Jack and is married to Mary and lives in Mineral Town based on the Harvest Moon DS with a GBA cartridge that enables the people of Mineral Town to visit the town in a specific day. In the boy version, if you marry someone from Mineral Town, you move there. So, yeah. I just made him from the FoMT game. They have a daughter named Lillian (female MC in ToTT).
This story follows the daughter of Mark and Chelsea (MC for Sunshine Islands and Island of Happiness) named Anita (because I didn't like the name Gretel, sorry for all those named Gretel). Anyway, family tree for those who want to know.
This may or may not follow my saved game. Kind of like a nuzlocke, I guess. Hope you tune in for the rest.
