Chapter 13: Plans Drawn, Dreams Made

The journey back to the Pole was a silent one...each Guardian deep in thought as they remembered the past and their relations with one small, feisty spirit. Through their memories...they finally began to recognize the sorrow and pain in her eyes...and the hesitance in her various approaches...

Jack bolted up from his seat beside Shade's bed as his fellow Guardians entered, grinning with hope and excitement, "So? What did you find? Is is going to help Shade? Is she going to wake up?"

"Th-The green light...it wasn't just an adult believer...it was Shade's believer..." Tooth said hesitantly.

"What!?" Jack questioned, nearly falling over his chair as he stepped backwards in surprise.

"She was telling a story Jack...Shade's story...and...we were so wrong all these years. Shade sacrificed herself before becoming a spirit. She was never dark...yet we were so cruel to her..." Tooth answered sadly.

Silence followed her statement, but it was Jack who spoke up. "Then now is the time to make up for it. You have her story...so now what?"

"We need a way ta' spread the story to all the ankle biters..." Bunny thought out loud, glancing around the room and stopping when he saw Sandy. His eyes widened in realization, "It's so simple...Sandy..."

Sandy glanced at him, a question mark appearing above his head.

"Can ye make a dream of er' story? Shade's story? An' give it to as many as possible?" Bunny asked.

Sandy stared at Bunny, becoming contemplative as he thought through the question. Multiple images flashed above his head, ending in a question mark. He looked once more at his fellow Guardian and shrugged as if to say maybe, he didn't know.

"Maybe we need a test?" Tooth suggested, "I don't think Sandy has ever attempted something like this...making a dream is a bit different than forming a story into one...right?"

"We could try it on Jamie and Sofie! They would be perfect for it!" Jack stated grinning.

"Zen test ve shall! To ze sleigh!" North proclaimed, dragging Bunny out of the room.

Thus all but Tooth began their journey to Burgess, as she quietly decided to remain with her fellow female spirit.

Burgess, Pennsylvania

As the Guardians flew over the sleeping town of Burgess, they noted that the darkness had effected even here...As they passed the houses of children, they heard screams of fear as nightmares formed. Quickly, they rushed to the house of two very precious believers. The ones that hoped would change their fate...

First was Jamie...He was asleep with his face pressed against the pages of one of his many books...and as the Guardians approached...they saw that he also faced the fears of night. Jack quietly flew over to his precious believer and turned to Sandy nodding. They must do this quickly before Jamie's nightmare becomes to strong.

With a nod, Sandy took out a handful of sand and began to weave his hands through it, eyes focused on the task at hand. In and out...back and forth...his handS weaved...as the ball of golden light shrank and enlarged, changing shape multiple times, before finally...he stopped. Walking over to the sleeping child, he hesitated...looking around at his friends. At their nods, he pressed the ball of light into Jamie's temple and the Guardians watched with bated breath as it sunk down...out of sight.

The results of this test would determine their path...and Shade's very life...
