Hello everyone! This is the last chapter for Start Die Rewind! I hope you enjoyed this story and I would like to thank everyone who review/read/alerted/favorised this story! Thank you for your support!
The last thread was struggling. Stuck between life and death.
She was drowning deeper and deeper into the darkness. She was suffocating and she heard voices and words she couldn't comprehend.
Death. Death. Death.
Max in the darkroom. Max in the darkroom.
Max is dead.
The words were blending into her mind and then everything became white as she heard a faint beeping. When she opened her eyes, she was in the diner again, sitting across her clone.
Nightmare Max stared at her, not with hatred or amusement, but as if she was solving a mystery.
"Am I dead?" Max asked, trying to recover from what happened.
"Your heart stopped for a bit, but no." Her counterpart answered, and closed her eyes, trying to clear her thoughts. "You broke the loop."
"What loop?"
"I won't bother to explain it again. You'll remember eventually." Nightmare Max stated.
Max sighed in relief and smiled. "I'd hate to die now. I don't want Chloe to be left behind again."
"About fucking time you stopped dying…" Her clone mumbled while looking through the window. The photographer's mind was still in chaos, but at least that chaos wasn't affecting time again. "Why did it have to be you? Why were you the one to survive?" She asked in a softer tone. She was bitter and confused.
She…they died so many times in different ways… and only one of them ended up surviving and she even managed to stop the storm.
What was so different about her?
Max might not have understood the depth behind the question, but she somehow felt it. They were the same person, after all. And somehow, there was this connection between her and her alternate selves, even though she wasn't aware of it yet.
"I guess… I'm just sick of bowing to fate." That was Max's answer, and it was more than enough for her clone.
Fate was cruel. Fate put the weight of the world on her shoulders. Fate cursed her with the ability of rewinding her mistakes, only to make worse ones. Fate drove her sanity away.
But today, fate had mercy.
"Your head is pretty fucked up right now." Nightmare Max stated.
"I know."
"You're going to be here often."
"I know."
"You might never be the same person again."
"That's okay." Max answered and took a deep breath. The old Max was a coward, a liar, a terrible person. This Max is going to be different. She won't look at the past anymore. She will keep moving forward. "I can deal with all of that later, but right now, I'm just…"
"Tired." Her counterpart finished her train of thoughts, and it was strange how much she could relate to that.
This week was full of death, anger, sadness, chaos.
She was going to ignore her hatred for once, and enjoy a moment of peace.
They are going to meet like this often, and she would have more opportunities to torture her.
Right now, she just wanted peace.
"Your time here is up. You're going to wake up." She stated and crossed her arms, watching her other self with interest.
The realization that she was going back to reality, where the events of the week took place hit Max. "What if things are still fucked up? What if I didn't fix anything? What am I going to find once I wake up?" The last thing she remembered was the storm, and she did not wish to see that again.
"Well, you're about to find out." Nightmare Max answered with a smirk, and then everything became blurred.
It was bright.
Too bright, that Max had to shut her eyes immediately. It took her a moment to be able to open them again. She was in a hospital, and she could've sworn she saw something blue…
"Chloe?" She saw her best friend standing by the door, staring at her with a mix of emotion before she started yelling something about a doctor.
Chloe is alive and it brought a smile to her face, and the sunlight warming her skin brightened her mood.
She did it. She fixed everything.
She tried to sit up only to be caught into a bone crushing hug from the punk.
"Don't you ever scare me like that!" She could feel her shoulder getting wet from the tears. She didn't blame her, what happened at the cliff was intense, and she really thought she was going to die. "No more heroic stuff or time travel mind fucks or anything! You hear me?"
Chloe pulled away and used her sleeve to wipe the tears. Her eyes were sparkling under the effect of the rays of light, and she looked brighter than ever. She wasn't wearing her usual clothes, but instead she was wearing a flannel shirt and her beanie was nowhere to be found, which made the photographer assume that this was a few days after the storm.
"You're alive." Was all what Max could say and it made Chloe laugh in relief.
"I'm alive." She smiled. "We both are."
The words felt so strange to her, and just then did she notice the palm of her hand hurting. Her rewind hand was shaking, and it was hard to move it, but she saw it.
That mark, the vortex shaped mark was carved into her skin, and at that moment, the blue butterfly flew through the window and landed on her hand.
The last thread wasn't cut.
Please tell me what you thought of the story, did you like it? Hate it? Was there something off? What was your favorite chapter? Thank you again for your support!
About the mark, it's the rewind symbol, I always liked the idea of it being on Max's palm, blame the fanart.
