Hey! The request here was pretty much buying the rings in Tahoe and a proposal. I just want to remind you that these are oneshots. If you want to fit some into the same world you can, but I just felt like creating an exclusive space for s12/Japril the Movie inspired oneshots. It's hard to explain exactly what qualifies. Just a vibe. But the point is...if you want, this is a completely different world than "Tightrope."
"Don't you try to sneak holding my hand and pretend it was an accident, mister. We're going to get rings and then going to our wedding, Jackson! We're almost there." April stopped in front of the jewelry store to chastise him.
Jackson just smirked. It was the theme of the morning, it seemed. He woke her up with a trail of kisses down her neck that morning, and boy did he get an earful. No matter that they'd been having sex a few hours before. No kissing, no hand holding, no touching until the minister told him he could kiss his wife. He was somewhat amused, but the struggle to keep his hands off of her was real.
He understood the no kissing part. He even felt kind of bad for coaxing her to have sex last night. She'd wanted to, but even after pulling him into her motel room, she had moments of pause, he'd seen them. She'd stop, pull away, shake her head and continue kissing him. Smiling the whole time and eventually she was begging for more, but still. He could refrain from kissing for a couple more hours. But not being allowed to hold her hand was ridiculous.
"April, we're going in to buy our wedding rings right now. A symbol of our unity. And you won't let me hold your hand? You realize that sounds ridiculous, right?"
"Well…" she bit her lip and let out a defeated sigh and he reached forward a little too quickly, thinking he'd won. She smacked his hand away."You realize most people don't even see each other before their wedding starts, right?"
"You realize you just broke your own rule, right? Hand over the hand." She rolled her eyes but did as she was told. They were going to be late if they spent too much more time arguing, anyway.
"Mmm….I don't know what I was thinking, this feels nice."
"For the record…I wish I could give you the perfect day. The waiting to see each other, the party, the family and friends…" he whispered as they walked in the store.
"Oh yeah, the down on one knee after dating awhile, the waiting until marriage for sex….you really tried to hit some of them."
"Well…"
She squeezed his hand when she saw him frown. "Relax. I don't need any of it, honey. Just you. And rings. But I don't even need fancy rings. We just need to get the job done."
He nodded at her and the jeweler when they reached the counter. "Hi. We're getting married in about an hour and…like she said we need some rings. But sweetheart?"
"Hmm?" She was already a few paces down from him, very focused on the wedding band section of the case.
"I want you to pick something you love, not just the simplest one because it's fast."
"I know, but I'm a simple girl, it's just who I am."
"And I love who you are. I just want to make sure you have a wedding ring you love."
"I will love it. You just want a platinum one, right? I don't really love the options for women but I love the simple white gold ones. They won't match but they'll go together. Kind of like us. Sir? I'll take that one right there," she pointed to the simplest white gold band. "And I'm a size six. Jackson come pick so we can go."
"Calm down April, we have some time." He'd just taken a quick glance at the case and already knew the ring he wanted.
"Yeah, but the faster we get these, the faster we get to the kissing part of the day." She raised her eyebrows, flirting, and Jackson loved that she didn't even care that the shop owner was laughing at them.
"That's not exactly true, sweetheart." He came up behind her and wrapped his arms around her after picking out his ring. "The minister is gonna be there in about forty minutes and it's ten minutes away."
"Well…"
"Well, we have some time and I would love it if you'd look at some of the shiner rings over that way…" He pointed toward the diamonds.
"But why? I told you I don't need one."
"But you want one. You were just talking about the getting down on the knee thing."
"Jackson, I was just kidding. And you don't have to do it soon or at all or….I don't want one today. Today isn't about rings, especially diamond ones."
"OK."
"OK?"
"Yeah, OK. I get it. But I still need you to look."
"You need me to look?" She wrinkled her nose at him.
"Yes…I know it's not important to you right now. But it is important to you. And to me. One day. And I need to know what cut you like and style and stuff."
"For one day."
"One day."
"And you know about cut and stuff. You're serious."
"I am."
"Ok." Secretly excited, she squirmed from his arms. She did always dream of her wedding, and it was turning out very different from the chic, simple farm party she'd had in mind. It was very thoughtful that Jackson cared that she had input in her ring, even if it wasn't the most important thing to her. Pretty rings were nice.
"Which one was that gasp for? Hmm? I heard it." He just wanted to kiss her to coax it out of her, but he controlled himself.
"That one!" She bit her lip and pointed to what the jeweler said was an Assher cut diamond surrounded completely by smaller square cuts.
"Can we see it?"
"No Jackson! No. We're just looking."
"This is what's involved in looking at rings April. People try them on."
"It's too big, it's not me." She shook her head, and again, he just wanted to kiss the defiant pout off her face.
"Not everything has to be 'you' and sensible, babe. Two days ago did you think it was 'you' to run from your wedding when you were already at the alter?"
She took a deep breath and he smirked, watching her put her 'argument' face on. "No, but I blame you for that one, Jacks. You couldn't figure out how you felt when you let the butterflies go and come find me?" But she was smiling.
"Wooow…" Alan the jeweler whistled, amused. His store was in a prime location, surrounded by chapels in many directions. He never had to make a hard sell. He usually just sat back and watched a decision happen. He'd never heard a story like this before. Margret was in for some entertaining dinner conversation tonight.
"Nope. You'll just have to live with it until I make it up to you. And the fact that you're in the Avery family now. Things are bigger, flashier. But more importantly, you can have things you love, just because."
"OK, well I don't want to know what my ring looks like, really. Plus we're gonna be late now, for real. And I have to pee. Alan, do you have a bathroom?"
He pointed her to the back and then without saying a word, shared a look with Jackson and started ringing up the diamond. She didn't know she wanted it. But Alan had been in the business a long time. He knew that gasp. This man was making a great choice buying this ring, the only choice he had, really. He knew it, happily slipping it into his pocket just as his fiancée came out of the bathroom. Thankfully, they really were running late at that point, because Alan didn't have time to replace the ring in the display in case she suspected anything. He'd have a hard time finding a suitable replacement; it was one of a kind.
"Leeet's not pop the champagne yet, Jackson. Let's have sex…" She whispered that last part, but was totally over how weird he'd been acting since they'd said their vows. Brunch was great, she loved a good brunch, but she had no idea why he'd insisted they go out for it immediately after the ceremony, especially after she'd suggested room service in the honeymoon suite. She was happy to have a wedding cake, but she didn't need it right after brunch. She agreed they needed to tell their parents, but didn't understand the urgency to do it as soon as they checked into their hotel room.
"Are you having second thoughts? We're at the kissing part of the day, you know. We have been for hours and you haven't exactly been taking advantage of it. We could be doing so much more than kissing, in fact. But if…"
"No April! No second thoughts. I'm so happy you're my wife. Sorry you didn't feel kissed enough, today."
He leaned in to make it up to her. He felt really badly that she'd sensed his nerves. The truth was, the damn engagement ring had been burning a hole in his pocket all day. He'd been trying to create the right moment, or stall to think of what to say.
The traditional "Will you marry me?" wouldn't work, clearly. Neither would "Will you move in to my place?" or "Will you take my last name?" He knew the answers to those, too. Yes, no. At brunch, he was so desperate he was almost going to go with "Will you accept this ring?" But if she found that romantic in the least, he didn't know her at all.
"You had a good day though, right?" he asked, pulling away.
"The best. The best day of my life. You?"
"Hands down, no question, me too."
"Good. Now get this dress off me please."
"Wait, there's something I have to put on you before I start taking stuff off."
"Jackson Avery if you bought a garter belt or something last night, I swear…"
He was reaching into his pocket to pull out the ring, but stopped, smirking. "What?"
"I'd wear it for you," she whispered, blushing. "I'd wear pretty much anything for you tonight."
"Hmm…now I wish I'd looked for a garter belt but…" He pulled out the ring box and grinned when he heard the same gasp as that morning.
"Wait, wait, wait," she squealed, putting her hand out to prevent him from getting down on his knee. It was a new sound he'd just started hearing in the past few days; his favorite one. "You're not a 'one knee' kind of guy, we're not a one knee kind of couple."
He cleared his throat, confused. "We're not? Because this morning you said…"
"I didn't really mean that stuff. Just continue, what's your question…."
"My…My question, right…"
"Yeah I mean, you have one right? Please don't just slide the ring on my finger and kiss me because I do…"
"Shhh…April, April, calm down…of course I have a question, you gonna let me ask it or keep talking?" He wouldn't have minded if she did keep talking because he had nothing in mind yet. But she made a zipping motion with her fingers on her lips, looking at him expectantly. He took a deep breath, not sure what would come out. And then…
"Will you make a baby with me?" He gulped, not prepared for that one to come out.
But she was squealing again. "Yes, yes, yes." He kissed her, sliding the ring on her finger.
"Wait…you mean it, right?" She asked after she'd taken a second to admire her ring and looked up to notice his face looked a little gray-greenish.
"Psssh, of course…" He waved her concern away. "I want a kid… one day. You want a kid one day. It's a part of marriage, right?"
"Oh…one day." She let her hand fell from in front of her face and frowned.
"What's that look for? I don't like it."
"I just, I thought you meant you wanted to start trying, right now. That was my plan for when…our plan…but me and you need a plan, now so…"
"Oh…well…It's kind of fast but if…"
"You're right, you're right…way too fast I shouldn't have assumed…"
"But I should've asked another question if…"
"So, you weren't sure?"
"What question to ask you?" he shrugged. "No. That I want to have babies with you? A hundred percent sure."
"Babies, plural?"
"Yeah, I hated being an only child."
"Good."
"Good."
"Jackson?"
"Hmm?"
"It takes some people years to conceive a baby."
"It does…" He started nodding slowly. "…Take some people years to conceive a baby."
She bit her lip, stealing glances at him. "It could take us years to conceive a baby."
"It could…." he agreed, still nodding.
"Jackson Avery?"
"April Kepner?"
"Will you start trying to make a baby with me…right now?"
He smirked before kissing her and pushing her back on the bed. "Like right this second?" he asked, reaching between her legs.
"Right this second." She nodded, reaching to undo his belt.
