Misunderstanding (Written by Golem XIV)

The tearful Tamaranean paced back and forth outside the infirmary, wringing her hands. She was too distraught to fly and too anxious to sit calmly and wait. The quiet sigh of the door opening made her turn immediately and run over to meet Raven as the sorceress stepped out of the medical facility, heaving an exhausted sigh and rubbing her temples with slow, weary motions.

"Will Richard be all of the right, friend Raven?"

Raven smiled in spite of her tiredness and placed a gentle, reassuring hand on Starfire's arm. "He'll be fine, Kori. It looks worse than it is. He'll be sore for a few days but I've mended his ribs and healed all the internal damage."

"Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you!" the redhead exclaimed as she pulled her best friend and sister-in-all-but-blood into a powerful hug. Raven winced, both from the bone-crushing, rib-cracking, air-denying strength of the alien's embrace and from the intensity of the anxiety, relief and love blazing from the taller girl.

"It's… okay… Kori," the empath wheezed and returned the gesture, more weakly perhaps, but with just as much affection.

Starfire released her and pulled back, her eyes glowing with joy and gratitude before a trace of guilt crept into them. Her hands fell from Raven's shoulders and her gaze dropped to the floor. "Is… is friend Beast Boy well, also?"

Raven hid a smirk. As if she could fault the tall redhead for worrying about Robin first. "He's just bruised. Don't forget that he was morphed into a dinosaur when Cinderblock struck him."

In truth, Raven was actually quite pleased with the state Beast Boy was in, though she wouldn't admit it even under the most horrifying tortures her own father could devise. The nasty bruise Garfield earned during today's confrontation gave her the perfect excuse to pamper her green boyfriend and fuss over him while grumbling and growling about his carelessness at the same time. Of course, it went without saying that it was absolutely out of the question to have the irritating, exasperating, utterly impossible changeling find out how much she positively adored him and doted on him. It would elevate his insufferability – is there such a word? – to doubtlessly obnoxious levels.

Starfire, however, did not seem to relax. She stared fixedly at the floor and shuffled her feet. "Friend Raven…"

"Hmmmm?" the sorceress hummed, still floating on a disgustingly pink and fluffy mental cloud, as she always did when her mind drifted over to Garfield.

"Do you think I should…" the alien swallowed, "... offer the apology to friend Cyborg?"

Raven blinked, startled back to Earth. Her Yellow aspect took over the reins of her mind away from Purple and Pink, and her brain was yanked back to more mundane concerns. Yes, Cyborg was the real problem. The two boys would be stiff and sore for a couple of days, but they were not in danger. Her Big Bro, on the other hand...

"Not yet, Star. Let me talk to him first," she spoke soothingly to the Tamaranean, then slid past her and headed for Cyborg's room. A worried frown creased her brow as the recent battle played over again in her mind.

-=oOo=-

Thank Azar, it's nothing serious! she thought as she quickly scanned Gar for any wounds, feeling her insides unclench and the panic recede. The sight of the ten-ton green triceratops hurled like a toy to smash against a building had almost made her lose it.

"Garfield, you idiot!" she snapped at him furiously as he groaned in pain and rubbed a tender spot on the back of his head. He smiled sheepishly at her and she barely managed to keep herself from melting, clutching at the frayed edges of her vanishing anger. "What made you think you could go toe-to-toe with a fifteen-foot-tall cement golem?"

"Sorry, Rae!" he flinched as he spoke. The adrenaline was wearing off, and even if he suffered no broken bones, the simple act of breathing was slowly becoming a painful challenge. "I tried… to morph into a bird… but rock-brain was… faster than I thought." He frowned to hide another wince. "How are the others faring?"

They both glanced over to where the battle raged at its fullest. Blue sonic blasts slammed into the stony creature, blasting small chips off its gargantuan frame. Starbolts machine-gunned into it, making it roar with pain and frustration. Explosive birdarangs detonated all over it in an eruption of light, smoke, and sound. But all the Titan's attacks seemed to accomplish was to enrage the huge monster.

It picked up a car and threw it at Cyborg, who blasted the vehicle into a cloud of harmless debris before it could hit him. Another car flew at Robin but the Boy Wonder rolled nimbly under it and tossed another handful of birdarangs at Cinderblock. Ignoring the explosions, the monster lifted a third car and heaved it at the flitting Tamaranean, who dodged without much difficulty. Her boyfriend, however, scowled at the sight and vaulted over his bo staff to hit the creature full in the chest with both steel-shod feet. The impact was so hard that sparks flashed and Cinderblock staggered.

But in his desire to wrench the golem's attention away from Starfire, Robin miscalculated the sheer mass of the concrete menace. It stepped back to recover its balance and its arm swept sideways, crashing open-handed into the Boy Wonder and catapulting him away as if brushing off a bothersome insect. The leader of the Titans flew, trailing a pain-filled grunt until he smashed into a wall and crumpled onto the ground unconscious.

"Stay here!" Raven shouted at her boyfriend in a voice that promised pain and suffering well above and much beyond whatever Cinderblock could deliver if her command was not obeyed. She then flew with all the speed she could muster towards her fallen friend and leader.

"CLORBAG VARBLERNERK!" The deadliest insult available in the Tamaranean language was shrieked in a voice reverberating with Righteous Fury, but the empath ignored it as she concentrated on joining Robin's broken ribs, healing the internal damage and stopping the bleeding in his punctured lungs.

The next few minutes were blurry in the young sorceress's mind, focused as she was on closing Robin's most dangerous wounds. "NO! NOT MY BABY!" she thought she heard Cyborg's despairing cry as the enraged alien seized the closest heavy object she could reach.

"NO!" Cyborg screamed in anguish again, but the T-Car was already slamming into Cinderblock's head, snapping it painfully sideways as the impact completely obliterated the car's entire rear right side.

"PLEASE NO!" Cyborg shouted again as Starfire swung the T-Car in a return sweep, again striking Cinderblock with it and utterly annihilating the left rear side as well.

"No!" Cyborg said, both the electronic and human parts of his brain frozen in helpless horror. Unable to do nothing except watch Starfire lift the remains of the T-Car and smash them repeatedly over the concrete monstrosity. The roof of the car caved in. Glittering shards of broken windows and windshields rained down. Destroyed bits and pieces of the car's interior flew all over like confetti.

"No…" Cyborg whispered brokenly as Starfire gripped the driveshaft of the T-Car and tore it out of its mountings with a screech of tortured metal, and then used it to club Cinderblock over his head and face again and again until the thick metal rod was deformed and twisted into an unrecognizable, useless piece of scrap. Still screeching in fury as she did so.

When she finally finished, the enormous monster tottered where it stood. Its knees buckled, and it fell crashing unconscious onto the ground.

"... no," Cyborg mouthed soundlessly, similarly dropping down onto his knees. His hands reached out towards the wrecked remains of the T-Car in a vain attempt to stop Starfire from ripping out the front and rear axles and bending them around Cinderblock's hands and feet, turning them into unbreakable manacles.

"Cyborg?" Raven's concerned voice echoed in the emptiness of the half-robot's mind, but he ignored it. Dry sobs shook his huge shoulders while he knelt, disconsolate. The only things his brain was able to register were the broken, twisted and mangled remains of his baby.

"Let's get them all to the Tower," Raven spoke in her best monotone to the alien, just as she landed beside them. Starfire's concern for her boyfriend was still not allowing her to understand why friend Cyborg was behaving so strangely.

Raven sighed internally. Star would get it soon enough, and the empath would then have two depressed friends to take care of, not counting the two careless boys that got wounded. This was definitely not her day.

Raven clicked her tongue and shook her head in uneasy frustration. For a week now they had all tried to pull Cyborg out of his moodiness, but nothing seemed to help. The big half-metal youth brooded silently, showing no interest in the latest games, or the new action movies. Not even an invitation to an all-you-can-eat barbecue extravaganza had helped to brighten his mood.

This was much worse than when Cyborg thought he couldn't defeat Atlas and fell into a deep depression, the sorceress realized. Even Garfield's selfless offer to eat a plate of eggs, ham, and bacon right there in front of him failed to move the half-robot out of his bleak despondency. And she knew how selfless an offer like that was coming from her green boyfriend.

"I am so sorry, friend Raven," Starfire came to stand beside her friend, hugging herself and exuding a sensation of abject, hopeless guilt that filled Raven's mouth with a bitter aftertaste. "I wish there was something we could do to apologize to friend Cyborg…"

It's time to end this, Raven grumbled inwardly in irritation. Positive emotions she could handle; her green boyfriend had finally pried open that part of her soul and allowed her to enjoy love, affection, friendship, trust and yes, even desire. But since the Cinderblock incident, the entire Tower was drowned in sadness, loss, guilt, and depression. For the sake of her own sanity, she had to do something about it, and she knew exactly what it was.

"Come with me, Star," she commanded and turned about to stride towards the elevator doors without bothering to check if the Tamaranean was following. Starfire hesitated for a moment, cast a final, forlorn glance at the man that she came to consider as her older brother, and sighed before she followed the Azarathian.

The elevator took them to the basement level. Raven walked silently but resolutely straight into the garage and flicked the lights on with a small, controlled surge of her power. Starfire stepped inside after her, confused and lost.

"Friend Raven, what…" she tried to say uncertainly. The sorceress turned to face her.

"You destroyed Cyborg's car, so you're going to build him a new one," the empath droned monotonously as if it was the most simple and logical thing in the world. The alien's eyes widened.

"B-but I do not have the knowledge…"

"I do," she was cut off dryly. "I will supervise and help you." A small smile graced the half-demon's usually stern features. "Besides, Vic is a documentation freak. He has every step written down, blueprinted and recorded on video for later analysis. With my assistance you should be able to finish in just a few days."

"Oh, friend Raven, you are indeed the best of the friends!" the tall alien cried and again enveloped the Azarathian in a bone-breaking hug, letting her go only when her face began turning as blue as her cloak.

-=oOo=-

Cyborg's eyes were staring at the large TV screen, but he was oblivious to whatever played on it. He also ignored Raven as she stepped into his field of view and offered him her hand in an uncharacteristically friendly, affectionate gesture.

"Come, Victor. I have something to show you."

The bionic youth grunted a refusal and waved a lazy, disinterested, dismissive hand. Raven's eyes narrowed, but she forced herself to relax. She knew that in this mood not even her famous blood-chilling threats would make an impression on Cyborg. This called for craftiness and slyness, concepts she wasn't very familiar with. But she had to try.

"It has to do with the T-Car," Raven cocked her head suggestively. "You sure you don't want to see?"

The mention of his baby finally ignited a small spark of interest in Cyborg's human eye. The sorceress hid a smirk. "Come," she beckoned and walked to the elevator.

He followed her silently down the elevator to the garage where a highly excited Starfire was waiting beside a car-shaped object covered with a big satin curtain. Cyborg's eye widened, his mouth opened and his hand lifted, a shaky finger pointing at the object hidden under the curtain.

"Is… is that…" He said with uncertainty. Both his human and bionic eyes unable to believe what seemed like a dream come true.

"Starfire has rebuilt the T-Car for you," Raven explained while nodding to the alien to go ahead and reveal the result of their efforts. With a flourish, the princess removed the obscuring curtain and the new T-Car stood there in all its glory.

Cyborg stared incredulously at the car, at Raven, at Starfire, then at the car again. His mouth worked but only a soft whine came out of it. His hands shook and his knees trembled.

Of course, Cyborg had taught Raven much about mechanics, but she still knew little about cars. More importantly, she knew even less about boys, except for the fanged, pointy-eared, green-skinned kind, and even the single representative of that particular population subgroup was still in many ways an enigma to her. In consequence, she had allowed Starfire complete freedom in the cosmetic aspects of the rebuilding. She let herself focus on the mechanics and electronics while leaving the alien in full charge of the unimportant details like the shape and the color.

This was no powerful SUV that exuded masculinity and virility. The gentle curves of the new T-Car were sleek and streamlined, and definitely feminine. The color scheme was not a stark statement in blue and metallic grey but a soft combination of delicate pinks and fuchsias. The new T-Car was, for all intents and purposes, a Barbie Mobile.

"What have you done?" Cyborg croaked, turning to Raven. "What have you done?" he said again, his voice slightly louder.

Starfire's face took on an uncertain look. "Friend Cyborg is something the wrong -" she started to ask.

"WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!" he shouted, before whirling around to run screaming from the garage. His hands clawing at his human eye while his bionic brain tried in vain to erase the soul-burning images from his mind.

The astonished girls watched him flee with utter bewilderment in their eyes. Then they exchanged a confused, uncomprehending look with each other.

"Boys!" Raven summed up their resigned puzzlement. They shrugged, linked their arms together, and walked slowly out of the garage away from the new B-Car.
