Cardiff 2016

Donna Nobel rested her hands on the metal barrier as she waited for Jack and Ianto to join her. Myfanwy had been fed, Gwen and Rhys were taking Anwen to the babysitter before joining them in the Bay. It was Donna's birthday - a night out in the Bay had been promised.

"Jack!" She looked up as he approached her. "Where's Ianto?"

"Martha called. He's talking to her. She's stuck in traffic but her and Mickey won't be long. They'll meet us there." Jack smiled as Donna linked arms with him. He loved the red haired loudmouth as if she was his sister. In many ways she reminded him of Dorothy. Both had a sharp tongue, both had settled down after travelling with the Doctor.

"Ok."

"Ianto is going to wait for them and meet us there." He explained. Donna smiled.

"Why Torchwood?" She looked at him. Jack frowned. "I mean you had all of time and space. Why 21st Century? Why Wales? Cardiff?"

"And what is wrong with Cardiff?" Jack asked. Donna looked out over the Bay. Lights reflected from the water as tourists and cardiffians enjoyed the early evening.

"Nothing." She rested her head against his shoulder. "I love it here. It's special."

"You would've gone home? To London?"

"No." Donna paused. "My Dad died. Heart attack. Very sudden. Him and Grandad were the only ones keeping me there. Mum always wanted me out of the way. I'm a permanent disappointment to her."

"That's not true."

"It is." Donna sighed. "Never mind. It's my birthday."

"You're right Cardiff is special." Jack stopped as a young couple passed them. "The Rift, Myfanwy. The Castle, the Bay, beautiful parks."

"But that wasn't why you chose to stay."

"No. Well, not the only reason." He paused. "Torchwood was a dirty word for a long time. Queen Victoria was not our greatest fan. The Irish, English and Scottish branches burned themselves out. Only Torchwood 3, Cardiff kept going. Inspire of everything."

"Above the law, outside the police and beyond all the security services." Donna paraphrased him. "Torchwood 3 still stands. What happened to Torchwood 4?"

"No idea." Jack answered honestly. His self deprecating smile catching her unawares. "We should look into it, someday."

"In the meantime there's Weavals, Pteytoids, Automatons and Fish People to help." Donna shrugged.

"Fish people? Carponoids." He laughed, knowing Donna hadn't meant any offence. The aliens did look like fish. In a city like Cardiff they all mingled together as the citizens of the city accepted those who sought refuge in the city. "I stayed because I met Gwen's mom, then it was because I had two daughters here. Alice and I may not see eye to eye but I wanted to be around."

"And now?" She looked at him.

"Now?"

"Before we met up you thought Ianto was dead. You were determined not to set foot in Wales again."

"I couldn't bare to be here without him. Donna,"

"Good job he's alive and well." She sighed. "All this because a girl from a London council estate couldn't let the Doctor die." Jack chuckled.

"The Welsh people are special too. It's more than just pretty countryside and monuments. The city, the valleys. All of it. It's a special place. The Rift is here for a reason, and so am I." Jack looked over his shoulder as footsteps approached.

"And here he is." Donna smiled as Ianto joined them. "Thought you were waiting for Martha and Mickey."

"I was." Ianto smiled as he straightened his tie. "Wilf needed a lift so I picked him up first."

"Wilf?" Donna gasped as her elderly grandfather appeared. The older man grabbed her into a bear hug as Jack and Ianto watched smiling.

"Hello Sweetheart. Appy birthday luv." He hugged her.

"It is now." She released him. "It is now."
