Beacon Academy, several months ago…

Legends. Stories scattered through time.

The world of Remnant was no true paradise, nor would perfection ever exist amongst its inhabitants, but Ruby was ever the optimist even amongst the bright and aspiring alumni of the prestigious Beacon Academy.

Every day, she met the morning with radiant joy and enthusiasm, living her life like a bustling ball of hyperactive energy eager to experience whatever surprises life had planned for her with the upmost display of joy and wonder.

Whenever she faced sorrow or difficulty, her struggle and distress could be exposed, but only for a moment before the brightness of her toothy grin returned indefinitely, shining heavenly light into the hearts of all those around her.

Altaïr could only shake his head in confusion at this bizarre phenomenon before him and laugh softly to himself, struggling to comprehend the depths of her bottomless optimism as they sat atop one of the massive arching structures lining the vast campus courtyard.

These towering walls gave the estate a more historic and grand aesthetic, while also simultaneously displaying a show of strength and power, inspiring its inhabitants and onlookers to revel in the strength of those sworn to protect the world from the forces of darkness.

"A dreamer's vision." The Assassin would find himself thinking privately.

The world was unforgiving and cruel, as he could very easily describe in needlessly oversaturated detail, and he believed with a firm resolve that the worst enemies of humanity were their own arrogance and greed. These were ideals that were etched into his soul and being, and Altaïr had faced his fair share of experiences to support his beliefs.

However, as much as he tried to, as much as he rationalized and imagined the possible reasoning, Altaïr still struggled to comprehend this contradiction of ideals that he faced in the form of a young teenage girl dressed in a black skirt and a red hooded cape.

Ruby had caught him sketching in his journal in the library in the midst of studying, and needless to say, he wasn't exactly perfectly prepared for the crimson whirlwind of caffeine and sunshine to burst in with the grace of a stampede of angry Goliaths, startling everybody including himself to the point that he had nearly tipped his chair over backwards.

Certainly not the mark of a skilled Assassin, he thought to himself with a mental smirk.

When the little girl burst into the massive room, Altaïr initially presumed she had lost another of her board games and would ransack the hundreds of bookshelves to find it, just as she did the last three or four times before tonight. Sighing with a mild upward curl of his lips, he picked up his pen from the floor and was about to resume with his sketch, before he turned back to Ruby.

The leader of Team RWBY was staring directly at him with her wide and sparkling eyes of silver, flashing another one of her blindingly luminous smiles at him. For a moment, Altaïr could have sworn that he had unconsciously gulped down, and he had no clue as to why.

That was when the girl zipped up to him until they were only inches apart from each other, his taller stature causing him to stare down at the small-framed huntress-in-training as she held her arms akimbo and bent over with her head staring upward to meet his confused eyes, with a rather cute pouting expression on her face.

"Aahh! Finally! I've been looking everywhere for you!"

Altaïr had no reply to the sudden outburst from the small girl, and his only response was to raise an eyebrow at the little girl's antics, sending the subtle message that he had no clue as to why she had barged in to interrupt him going about his daily business.

After a brief scolding from the huntress-in-training about his ridiculous work ethic and how he studied too much and needed a break, the next thing Altaïr knew, he was being dragged by the hand outside by the little girl at top speed, Ruby using her Semblance to zip out of the large doors of the library and down the hallways of the campus in a brazen flurry of rose petals.

Of course, this led him to the arcs in the courtyard, where he and Ruby sat to gaze up at the midnight stars in the vast canvas of the moonlit cosmos above. As an Assassin, relaxation was only a bleak suggestion in his daily life, but Ruby was far too insistent to allow him to have his way.

Altaïr leaned back and rested his spine against the stone structure, laying his body down parallel to the ground below. His head was relaxed as his eyes were directed to the untouched heavens above him, as his eyes were filled with the massive expanse of stars and cosmic bodies above the two of them.

He reached out a hand, brushing his finger in the direction of the moon, fragmented and shattered with its many disembodied pieces scattered nearby its remaining shape. Ruby often referred to its shape by comparing it to that of a smashed cookie, a likeness that never ceased to humor those around her, not even himself.

On nights like these, Altaïr remembered his days back at the Assassin's bureau in the city, growing up amongst other young initiates like himself. Even as a child, he was training to his absolute limits, as per the staggering standards set by the organization that raised him from birth. Most days were filled with blood, sweat, and tears, but not always.

Some days on the occasion he was allowed time to himself, Altaïr immersed himself in literature, reading to fill his head with knowledge and insight of the world around him. He would read of stories and legends of heroes that saved Remnant in the past, beacons of light that shone through the darkness and put an end to the evil that plagued the world.

Sometimes, he found himself likening them to the Assassins and their mission to exact a vision of freedom and equality for all the people of Remnant, but as time passed, even he had to grow up and realize a deeper truth about the world he lived in and what he could truly accomplish as an individual.

As these thoughts passed him by, he stared to the side at the little girl stargazing beside him. He cocked his head upwards to study the features of her face. Her face was serene and full of admiration, making her eyes practically sparkle like a pair of shining diamonds, capturing his attention in a curious way.

"Silver eyes are quite unique, indeed." He thought to himself as he propped his palms behind him, hoisting his body to sit upright as he turned towards his friend.

"You know, I used to stargaze on nights like these when I was a child." Altaïr spoke out loud, capturing the young girl's attention as she turned his way with a hum.

"When I wasn't training, my best friend and I would sit down and watch the stars, maybe have a friendly competition to see who could spot the most constellations in the sky." Altaïr recounted with a rare smile creeping onto his face as he recalled his memories as a child with Malik on nights much like this one.

"Conste-…huh?" Ruby stuttered, finding herself blushing amongst her tongue-tied words.

Altaïr let out a sigh as he turned back up to the sky. "Constellations. When you look up at the stars, some of them form shapes of men, animals, or even Grimm."

Altaïr then spotted one and tapped Ruby on the shoulder to catch her attention. "Over there? The five stars clustered together? That constellation is called "The Eagle". Notice the wings?"

Ruby looked up in the direction of Altaïr's finger and as she saw the pattern in the sky, she smiled brightly and bounced with joy. "Oh yeah! I see it! I see it!"

"Legends and stories from my childhood never ceased to amaze me, and there were times when me and my brothers would lie down under the stars, imagining their formations coming to life." Altaïr breathed out in wonder, picturing the assembly of stars soaring across the night sky, beating its vast, majestic wings with a triumphant shriek.

"I'll never forget nights like those. Even now, I still treasure those memories." Altaïr sighed with a content smile appearing on his usually cold and icy face, a rare sight for Ruby. With a mischievous smirk, she glanced in the direction of the aloof Assassin.

"You know, if I knew better, I'd invite you to do this more with me if it meant seeing you this happy all the time! Our friends deserve to see this incredible moment with me!" Ruby joked with a lighthearted giggle, causing Altaïr to roll his eyes in defeat.

"Fine, but first I'll need a small fee from you, my friend." Altaïr muttered as he let his back lie down, causing his head to face the stars above him.

"What do you mean?"

"Well, first, there's the matter of all that lunch money you've asked from me throughout the year… How about you pay me back? All 1,200 Lien?" Altaïr suggested with a smug expression, watching Ruby's face pale into a childish fluster, causing him to laugh internally at her outburst.

"W-wait! I-Isn't that a little steep? I told you, I'd pay you back for that later! Cut me some slack, darn it!" Ruby whined with a childish pout.

"My money, not yours, Ruby." Altaïr shot back. "S-shut up!" Ruby attempted to yell back at him, before descending into a lighthearted laugh.

Her contagiously positive energy was not ineffective on the Assassin, as her laughter was joined by a small smile and then a light chuckle as the two combat students shared in their laugher before they both turned back to gaze up at the stars.

"Hahaha… Yeah. By the way, me and my mom used to do stuff like this. I just didn't know what those constellation thingies where called." Ruby laughed as she journeyed down her own memories.

"Your mother?" Altaïr inquired.

"Yeah. She was… the best mom ever. She was always so nice to everybody, and she always made sure to tuck me in at night, and she made the yummiest cookies!..." Ruby recalled with a giggle, but Altaïr could notice a small faltering in the intonation of her voice.

"Most of all, though, she was a huntress. She believed that everybody deserved a second chance, even the bad guys. She never liked fighting, but she never stopped me or Yang, though. She's actually the one who inspired me to come here."

"Heh. I…I wonder if she would be proud of me."

Altaïr noticed the pause in Ruby's recollection, turning to notice a small tear trickling down her cheek as she sniffled softly, just barely loud enough that he was able to detect the subtle noise.

"Ruby, if you don't want to talk abo-…"

However, Ruby stopped him with a hand raised up. "N-no. I-it's fine. Really. She… actually died before I really got to know her. Most of what I heard was from Yang, Dad, and Uncle Qrow. They said she went on a mission and just… never came back."

"Sometimes… I wonder why she did it. I'm sure it was to save a lot of people. That only makes sense, right?"

Ruby's tears began to multiply in number as her story continued on, causing streaks to trickle down her cheeks as she stared up at the shattered moon above her, overlooking the world of Remnant with its dim lunar rays. Altaïr turned to his friend and slowly began to realize his mistake. Ruby was always optimistic, but he was wrong to base them solely off of a shallow dream.

"I suppose it could be said that we might be meeting the same fate if we're training here…" Altaïr lampshaded with an empty sigh, staring back up at the stars above and allowing his eyes to wander across the cosmic canvas.

"What do you mean?..." Ruby muttered in a confused and unsettled whisper as she directed her gaze towards him, turning her head so that her eyes met his icy glance.

"We're training to be huntsmen and huntresses. Men and women who fight against a seemingly unending wave of monsters, but to what real end? Are we really moving forward or are we holding ourselves back?" Altaïr muttered with enough tension to make a Goliath tremble behind its tusks, before he turned towards Ruby with a dead serious eye.

"Are we going to ignore ourselves and our own wrongdoings? Those who would rather live nefarious lives than help one another? Are they truly worth our service, or are we fighting with an endgame in sight?" Altaïr continued to rant on, as Ruby stood frozen, taking in his every bitter word like an ice cube pressed against her skin.

"Ruby… why do you want to be a huntress?" Altaïr asked, curious for an answer.

Ruby paused, and for a moment, she stopped sniffling under her breath as she rubbed a knuckle against her eyes, wiping away the dampness onto the backside of her hand. She looked up at the moon above, and before Altaïr realized it, Ruby was standing near the edge of the arc overlooking the entire courtyard as scarlet rose petals swirled around them, carried by the soft midnight breeze.

Ruby stared down at Altaïr with a determined steel in her silver eyes as they shined with the light of the moon above them. The winds grew in force, swirling a light breeze around the pair of combat students and allowing small rose petals to flutter in the space between and around them.

"Why…? I guess… it's because I don't want anybody else to lose their loved ones the way I did."

Altaïr looked up at Ruby, not exactly baffled, but intrigued all the same by her answer.

"The way I see it, the world is a place everybody can enjoy living happily with the ones they love, and no one should have that right taken from them. My mom and many others died so that we could live, so that we could be free."

"More than anything, I'm going to make sure nobody else has to cry like I did ever again."

Altaïr felt the smooth gust of wind brush past his short brown hair as rose petals danced around the two of them like fireflies in a midnight field. He gazed up at the young girl who had sworn her life to save everybody around her, and he smiled with genuine warmth from the bottom of his heart as he faced the hopeful beacon of light before him.

"A beautiful dream, indeed. Do you really believe you'll be able to see it through to the end?"

With this, Ruby only smiled brightly as she always did.

"Yep. After all, I'm gonna be a huntress, aren't I?"

A sigh escaped his lips.

Such innocence. Perhaps I'm the one that needs to wake up.

Amity Coliseum, Present Day

"STOOOOOOOP!"

Ruby screamed the words out loud, feeling her throat beginning to sore as she watched the scene unfold before her eyes, in front of the entire world as the entire Coliseum fell silent in complete horror.

The thick air enveloping the entire arena was eerily quiet and fragile, like a glass of water brimming with the threat to overflow and spill out. An entire stadium crowded with spectators, previously bustling and excited but now only utterly shocked and baffled beyond comprehension of any means.

All eyes were directed to the open space below the terraces, in the wide and vast battle stage where only a single girl stood, frozen still from fear. A short distance from her position, scattered pieces of metal and cloth laid still, strewn over the colorless floor and scrapped into smithereens.

Among the pieces, the severed head of a young girl laid against its side, its cold, lifeless eyes devoid of whatever emotion or fear that may have struck her before her body could no longer endure the strain. Pyrrha continued to stare, unable to move, much less speak, as her mind was ready to snap itself into countless shards and splinters.

What have I done?

How could this have happened?

A million thoughts ran through her horrified mind, completely freezing her in place as she continued to stare at the dismembered body with tears leaking down her face. She felt the urge to vomit, but that was completely suppressed by her myriad of sadness, fear, and complete shock.

Above the stadium, a hooded figure dashed down the aisles, hoping to find his friend as Connor raced towards Ruby as quickly as his legs could manage. He had hoped that the voice that spoke to them was worth their trust and that Edward wasn't walking straight into a trap. Nonetheless, he kept running even as the crowd fell completely silent.

Sure enough, Connor stopped at a certain tunnel exit, where he spotted a small girl kneeling down on the ground weeping sorrowfully with tears rolling down her cheeks to stain the concrete. Beside her, he spotted Altaïr, with a hand over her shoulder and whispering quiet words of comfort as he struggled to keep his own tears from falling.

Connor had hardly seen Altaïr act this emotionally vulnerable, and he could hardly blame him, as he was ready to break down himself. Altaïr no longer had his hood on and his normally stoic and icy expression was wavering, making his distress far more visible. Most strikingly, Connor noticed that one of his hands was missing a finger. With this sight, he could only guess that he had defeated Mercury, or he had him on the run.

Running up to his friends, Connor placed a hand of comfort over Ruby's shoulder as he raised his hood up, hearing Ruby's quiet but broken voice whimper out for her lost friend.

"Penny…"

Altaïr turned to meet Connor's eye, then nodded as a wordless expression of gratitude, before his face darkened, him clenching his newly four-fingered fist with venom.

"Mercury got away. He hit me across the head, and then he was gone. Looks like we were too late."

"We'll find him. He has to pay for all this. Emerald too. We'll find them, right?" Connor protested, despite the uncertainty that lingered in his heart, whispering small, but poisonous doubts into his resolve.

Altaïr's firmly fixed frown quivered for a second, but before he could reply, a loud whine from the intercom ripped through the deadly silence, catching the ears of every frightened soul with their eyes on the events transpiring within Amity Coliseum, sending a ferocious new wave of fear to wash over the terrified masses of Remnant as a single voice rang through the atmosphere, soft in its tone but raging with the foreboding wrath of a rolling thundercloud.

The screens flashing above and all around broadcasting the event then all began to glitch and malfunction, before phasing into an ominous red screen, flashing the black figure of a queen chess piece, leaving the world to listen as the voice echoed forth.

This… was not a tragedy.

This… was not an accident.

This is what happens when you hand over your trust, your safety, your children, to men who claim to be our guardians, but are, in reality, nothing more than men.

Our Academies' headmasters wield more power than most armies, and one was audacious enough to control both.

All eyes then shifted to the lone figure standing straight up from his front row seat and marching up the stairs with beads of sweat rolling down his metal-plated forehead. However, the voice was far from finished.

They cling to this power in the name of peace, and yet, what do we have here? One nation's attempt at a synthetic army, mercilessly ripped to pieces by another's star pupil. What need would Atlas have for a soldier disguised as an innocent little girl? I don't think the Grimm can tell the difference.

Every man and woman then turned to stare down at the redheaded girl in the arena weeping miserably, shedding tears as the dismembered pieces of Penny's body laid dead and fractured along the ground, devoid of life or any semblance of the cheerful and bubbly girl that once inhabited those eyes.

And what, I ask you, is Ozpin teaching his students? First a brutal and needless assault, now this? Huntsmen and huntresses should carry themselves with honor and mercy, yet none exists in what I have seen here.

The entire world was watching now, and they had their breaths held in unison. The angered words spoken to them rang true and clung like hungry lice, boring into their fragile hearts and terrifying them to the bone, especially in light of the terrible tragedy that had just transpired before their shocked eyes. Every person in Remnant who was able watched and listened, as Cinder's voice continued.

Perhaps Ozpin felt as though defeating Atlas in the Tournament would help people forget his colossal failure to protect Vale when the Grimm invaded its streets. Or perhaps this was his message to the tyrannical dictator that has occupied an unsuspecting kingdom with armed forces. Honestly, I haven't the slightest clue as to who is right and who is wrong. But I know the existence of peace is fragile, and the leaders of our kingdoms conduct their business with iron gloves.

The tension was reaching a boiling point as more and more people listened in closer with nail-biting anxiety. Weiss and Blake watched from the fair, as crowds of people gathered near the TV system or listened to the broadcasts playing off their scrolls; it was everywhere, and everyone was listening in complete and utter fear.

As someone who hails from Mistral, I can assure you the situation there is... equally undesirable. Our Kingdoms are on the brink of war, yet we, the citizens, are left in the dark.

From within the rafters far above the stadium, Shay let out a deep growl from under his breath as he slung his rifle over his shoulder and listened to Cinder's words, cursing himself for being unable to do anything at all to stop her, feeling his grip tighten over his collar. However, he was frightfully aware of the storm that was to come after this eerie calm, and he was going to help in any way he was able.

So then I ask you… when the first shots are fired…

who can you really trust?

With that, the message was cut off and everything returned to normal. However, the silence remained, thinning the atmosphere enough to the point that one would be able to hear a pin drop in the far distance. Connor remained frozen in place alongside Ruby, while Altaïr desperately attempted to reach out to his fellow Assassins amidst the cold stillness of the entire Coliseum.

"Edward? I found Connor… Where are you..? Answer me, damn it!"

"Ezio… are you there..? I need you here right now..!"

No response followed, and Altaïr for once began to bear a face that showed a semblance of hopelessness. His breathing hastened and sweat rolled down his face, desperately hoping to hear an answer in light of this terrible development. Something far worse was to come and Altaïr was bracing for the rough impact that would crash over them all any moment.

"A-Altaïr..?"

Ruby turned her head to face her friend as Connor leaned in as speechless as ever, the girl's silver eyes widened and resembling smooth mirrors, looking into his and welling with tears.

"W-what's going on..?" Ruby's voice was weak and weary, the sight of Penny's death crushing her heart the most out of any other person in the Coliseum. Her mind was swirling rapidly, her emotions and thoughts conflicting and ravaging her consciousness, one voice telling her to get up and the other refusing to accept the terrible truth in front of her eyes. This moment was void of hope, and she was scrambling for a small sliver of it.

Altaïr opened his mouth to respond and give his friend a ray of hope, anything at all to make things seem just a little bit less worse, when his comms screamed to life, causing him to flinch noticeably with a loud grunt as he winced and grabbed ahold of his earpiece.

"Edward! What is it?!" Altaïr practically screamed into his comms, ready to lose his mind right then and there.

"GRIMM ARE SWARMING THE DAMN CITY! GET EVERYBODY OUT OF THE STADIUM NOW!"

ALERT. INCOMING GRIMM ATTACK.

THREAT LEVEL: 9

PLEASE SEEK SHELTER IN A CALM AND ORDERLY MANNER.

The warning playing over the loudspeaker accompanied by loud sirens boomed throughout the amphitheater with a calm voice, but did nothing to soothe the deeply unsettled populace within.

The sinister silence that plagued the arena was now long gone as the cold fear felt by the audience was now replaced by a frantic pandemonium of distress and panic, as the crowds of people gradually snapped back to reality, the chaotic wave of fear and confusion washing over the entire Coliseum like a flash flood.

Many were already jumping out of their seats and running for the exit, stumbling over one another as the sirens blared on throughout the arena, echoing off the walls in a foreboding crescendo. The scene was complete chaos and insanity, with the bubbling threat of mass pandemonium nearing a boiling point.

Staring over the massive crowd of panicking citizens, Altaïr's breathing only grew more frantic as did Ruby's, with Connor helpless as he could only stare, not knowing what to do anymore. The plan was in shambles and chaos was flooding the stadium.

"Ladies and gentlemen, there is no need to panic!" Ironwood's stern, but wavering voice declared over the microphone, in a vain and ultimately fruitless attempt to calm the panicking crowds flocking to the exits, much to his own distress.

Suddenly and without warning, the entire Coliseum shuddered as if battered by a raging storm. If the crowd could not be more terrified, the entire stadium was a screaming mess as a deafening shriek filled the air, signaling the arrival of a massive Nevermore, the gigantic Grimm beating its wings and pounding its talons against the Coliseum's walls.

This was terribly wrong. Such a huge Grimm could never remotely come near the border, much less with the Atlesian Air Fleet patrolling the skies. Altaïr's thoughts ran rampant as he stared in wide-eyed terror.

"A Nevermore?!" He heard a voice ask in fear.

"How did it get past the fleet?!" He heard another exclaim in shock.

Connor beside him was just as tense, staring up at the giant bird as it continued to bash its talons against the floating structure, causing the entire stadium to shake, causing another set of fleeing civilians to stumble and lose their balance. Reaching for his earpiece, Connor prayed for an answer.

"Edward, can you get here in time? They won't be able to evacuate the civilians fast enough!" Connor said, gazing past the exit at the long line of civilians being ushered into numerous Airbuses lined up along the balcony, supervised by Altesian soldiers. Between the Grimm and the massive amount of spectators lining up, this was not going to work in time.

Altaïr had to do something, and he had to do it now.

Meanwhile on the arena, a lone figure knelt before Penny's scattered remains, completely paralyzed from pure shock. Pyrrha's eyes were wide and blank, with her face blanched as she could only stare in front of her at what she had done with her own hands, her own power.

A girl. A pure, innocent, and kindhearted girl with amazing skills and potential to be a phenomenal huntress, suddenly snuffed out like candlelight in the wind. Pyrrha's heartbeat boomed like a war drum in her wracked brain, and while her eyes leaked rivers of tears, she could not bring herself to blink or look away. They called her worthy. They chose her to shoulder the fate of the world.

Oh, how wrong they were. She was none of that, just a murderer.

I killed her.

It's my fault.

I killed her.

It's my fault.

I killed her.

It's my fault.

The voice in her head brewed a storm in her mind, repeating like a broken record. Scraping away at her conscious like a twisted prayer, screaming into her ears like it was the only thing the world would let her hear.

She could not even notice the gargantuan crow battering the Coliseum's shields, causing the entire structure to shake. The muffled thumps caused her body to quake, but her mind was nowhere near reality. Her ears blocked out all noise, her wide eyes staring at the horrible thing she had done. She also failed to recognize the voice shouting at her from the terraces, pleading her to move and get out of the way in time.

"Pyrrha! Listen! You've got to move! That thing'll break through any minute! Pyrrha!"

Jaune yelled desperately from the seats, ready to leap out, take her hand and pull her back to safety, but his own hands were bound by Ren and Nora, both just as frightened and confused as he was, each holding an arm of his, desperately trying to keep him from getting himself killed.

Jaune's mind ran with a million thoughts all at once. First, the matter of watching a friend of his totally and completely torn to shreds was jarring enough, but the sudden arrival of a wave of Grimm sent a tsunami of dread up his throat, making him want to vomit right there on the spot enough to live up to his former nickname.

The deafening cry of the Nevermore above them rang throughout the stadium once more, causing all who remained to look up in fear. Sure enough, the titanic bird had stopped pecking and stomping down on the arena's shields, and instead began to furiously beat its massive wings, causing it to ascend into the air high above the stadium, its glowing red eyes never leaving the Coliseum.

Jaune's eyes widened in horror once he realized what the Grimm was planning to do, and before he could fully process it, he shrugged off the grasps of his teammates, who reached out for him and called out his name, but he had already vaulted over the terraces and began running to the center of the arena, hoping to reach the idle Pyrrha.

"Pyrrha! Please! Snap out of it!" Jaune cried out desperately one last time, hoping to rouse at least one reaction from the traumatized girl, that she would just hear his voice and come back to her senses. He begged, he prayed to whatever might listen from up above for something, anything that would get her out of harm's way and back into his arms.

He wanted to hold her and tell her everything was alright, that he would never abandon her, that he would always be there to fight for her.

Jaune could hear the cracking noise of the shields shattering above him, giving way for the gigantic monster of a raven to slam its huge body onto the arena, the force of the landing blowing both him and Pyrrha away with a powerful draft of wind. Pyrrha groaned in pain and confusion, still dazed from the sudden appearance of the Grimm.

Her eyes blinked for the first time since the fight had ended, barely making out the massive bird in front of her. She raised an arm to protect her eyes from the last gusts of wind as the Nevermore released another loud shriek, spreading its wings and preparing to attack. Pyrrha tried to raise her arms to defend herself, but her weapons were nowhere to be found, and her heart had little to nothing left to keep her going.

Her heart ached over what she had done, and her body could no longer bring itself to keep fighting. Trembling down to her bones, Pyrrha could only stare in blank horror, accepting her fate as she waited for the bird to bound over and finish her off.

The Nevermore's swordlike talons neared her body, but all of a sudden, a red blur streaked through the air above her and crashed directly into the Nevermore, causing it to screech out in agony. Looking above her to see a trail of dainty rose petals fluttering in the wind near her head.

Gasping in surprise, Pyrrha lifted her teary eyes to see Ruby Rose plunging a sword into the Nevermore's chest, a sword belonging to the girl she had just… murdered. The young reaper's eyes were wracked with tears, but Ruby's grip on the sword was powerful with a surging anger at this beast for daring to hurt her friends. Ruby yanked the sword from the blackened flesh of the Grimm, landing in front of the dazed Pyrrha.

"R-Ruby?"

Growling as the Nevermore rose back up, Ruby raised the sword of her fallen friend to take a stand.

"YOU LEAVE HER ALONE!"

The giant bird cocked its head curiously at the pint-sized huntress-in-training before flapping its wings and releasing another deafening shriek that shuddered the entire Coliseum. Ruby flinched under the creature's screech filling her ears, but her eyes remained locked onto the Grimm and her hands clenched around the weapon once belonging to her best friend.

The Nevermore then beat its wings powerfully as drafts of wind surged from its ascent. The bird took to the air, staring Ruby dead in the eye with a glowing red glare beneath its bony face mask. Rising higher into the air, the giant Grimm soared, circling the arena before diving towards the two girls.

Ruby stood defiantly, readying the sword in her hands with a focused glare, prepared to defend Pyrrha at all costs. The Nevermore zoomed towards her, growing ever closer, threatening to snap her up in its gaping beak. However, a saving grace descended from the heavens above, quite literally in fact.

A single missile shot down from the skies above and struck the Nevermore on its back, causing it to flinch in pain and its flight to dip. Immediately after, two more crashed into the bird's body, followed by a third, a fourth, and another dozen more, pinning its wings down and causing the Nevermore's body to crash down to the floor, gargling in pain as it skidded across the arena, stopping in front of Ruby.

The titanic raven let out one more pained shriek from its beak before collapsing, its head limp and its body still, peppered with several Beacon-issued rocket-powered lockers, each of which began to open with a hiss of steam.

The owners of each respective locker in the Coliseum then stepped down from the terraces, walking up to the Nevermore's body to retrieve their weapons. Teams of all colors, styles, and races stepped forth and armed themselves, Nora reaching for Magnhild with an excited expression on her face, with Ren sighing behind her as he cocked Stormflower.

Team SSSN retrieved their weapons, with Sun twirling his staff to hoist across his shoulders, with Neptune checking his gun, Scarlet and Sage doing the same with their respective weapons, grinning alongside their team. Teams CFVY, ABRN and FNKI armed themselves as well, sharing determined expressions amongst one another as fellow huntsmen and huntresses-in-training.

Altaïr stepped forward, too, retrieving his sword from his own locker, sighing as he looked down on his newly four-fingered hand, grasping his blade with killing intent in his eyes, turning to see Ezio and Connor behind him, ready to join the fight.

"Sorry we weren't able to help. I should have been here with you, brother. Penny…" Ezio said to Altaïr, regret on his face as he growled, thinking about what had just happened. Leonardo must be completely devastated right now.

"There was nothing you could have done. I am sure of that." Altaïr replied, his own brand of grief written across his icy expression.

"But this is no time for grief. Our mission still stands. Those two will die for what they have done. I swear it." Altaïr coldly stated, his fist clenched in anger.

However, as he was saying this, the ground began to shake, as the Nevermore's head rose from the floor and released another deafening screech as its two sets of eyes glowed red. The bird's body rose from the ground, causing the students to lose their footing and stumble, shaking off the lockers on its back.

"Don't let it off the ground!" Coco yelled out loudly, catching the ears of everyone in the area.

Immediately, every combat student sprung into action, gripping their weapons tightly and moving in formation with one another like it was second nature. They moved down, over, and across the giant Grimm's body, attacking weak points with blades and polearms or moving away at its girth with as much Dust ammo as possible.

Ren and Connor were the first to act, the former leaping up and spinning his blades, hacking away at the Nevermore's bony forehead, allowing Connor to take to the air with his tomahawk raised above his head. The Assassin then swung with all his strength, cleaving away a length of bone and streaking red from the wound.

Altaïr and Ezio made their moves as well, aiming for the creature's clawed wings. Altaïr ran towards the Nevermore's wings ready to beat down and send it into the air, but it was too late as Altaïr stabbed his sword down onto the bird's claws, pinning its wing to the floor, allowing a skating Neon to smack one of her nunchaku against the blade, covering the claw in a block of solid ice and freezing it to the ground.

Ezio looked to an airborne Reese Chloris on her hoverboard, and with a wordless exchange of communication, Ezio ran towards her with an outstretched arm. Grabbing the Assassin by the hand, Reese sped towards the Nevermore at top speed, spinning in mid-air and throwing Ezio in its direction. With his momentum, Ezio drew his sword and swung forward with a roll. The blade cleaved clean through the Nevermore's wing, severing it at the joint and causing the bird to screech out in pain as its wing fell to the ground and disintegrated into black mist.

Using this opportunity, Arslan swung down with her rope dart, grabbing Yatsuhashi and using her massive strength to hoist him into the air with her. Meanwhile, Sun nodded to his teammate, Sage, who stood ready with his broadsword. Running toward his team leader, Sun caught his legs as he leapt up, pushing him into the air and concentrated his Semblance to summon two light clones into the air as well.

Nora skated up the Nevermore's spine, making her way to the head. Leaping up to avoid a snap from the Nevermore's open beak threatening to swallow her whole, Nora spun in the air and swung Magnhild down with a grenade-powered smash. The blow crashed against the Nevermore's skull with thunderous force, sending the Nevermore's head smashing down onto the floor, completely stunning the giant bird.

It was then that Sage had leapt off the second of Sun's light clones and Yatsuhashi was thrown into the air by Arslan, both greatsword wielders now soaring through the air and descending down onto the Nevermore which was stunned and lying flat on the ground.

Zeroing in on their target, the two combat students moved in sync as they aimed for the nape of the massive beast's neck, their swords cleaving through flesh like a knife through butter. In a swift movement, both their legs slammed down to the ground, along with the disembodied head of the creature, the height of it alone exceeding that of half the combat students.

The severed head of the Nevermore plummeted to the floor before dissipating into a haze of black mist, blown by the winds out into the vast night sky. Once the battle was over and the monster's body followed into oblivion, the congregation of combat students all breathed a sigh of relief, their muscles relaxing as they tended to their teammates and friends.

Ruby herself felt her tense grip on Penny's sword loosen, her arms sore from the fierce battle. Turning her head to Pyrrha, she could see that her kneeling position hadn't changed even after the Nevermore attacked them both, her face betraying her distress and soul-crushing guilt.

Wide silver eyes matched the quivering gaze of a now dulled emerald green, driving another pike through Pyrrha's heart and causing tears to drench her cheeks once more. A sniffle escaped her lips as Ruby's solemn gaze demanded her reply.

"R-Ruby… I-I'm…" Pyrrha sputtered out in pieces, unable to think properly through her guilt. Glancing downwards, Pyrrha clutched in her hands a rag of cloth, beige in color and torn into a shred. Again the bile from the recesses of her throat threatened to escape her mouth once again, but she managed to hold it in, allowing only wet tears to escape.

Swallowing the bitter taste of regret, Pyrrha turned a tearful gaze to Ruby. "I-I'm so sorry!" Pyrrha was sobbing uncontrollably now, bringing her hands to her face in a vain attempt to stop her tears before Ruby returned her sorrow-filled expression.

"Me too. But this isn't your fault." She told her amidst her own tears, after which Jaune walked past her, holding Pyrrha's weapons in both hands.

"She's right."

Walking up to Pyrrha, Jaune held out his hands, cueing Pyrrha to retrieve her armaments, before Jaune placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Whoever was on the microphone, they're the ones that did this. We have to make sure they don't take anyone else. We're all in this together, Pyrrha."

Jaune's confident tone and resolve touched Pyrrha, as her tears dried and her lips curved up into a smile. Nodding in agreement, she reaffirmed her grip and joined the group of newly assembled combat students.

However, a growling roar could be heard from above the stadium, causing all the students to turn their heads to the Coliseum's outer rim, where multiple winged Grimm could be spotted perching atop the ridge, gazing down on the students soullessly.

Their wings were a feathery black with their beaked heads completely covered a bony skull plate, but their lower bodies were feline in appearance with four legs and a long spiked tail not unlike a lion's, as their beaks opened to release a bellowing roar.

"Griffons, above us!" Ren called out, alerting the rest of the combat students to the threat above them, leading everyone to have their weapons on hand locked and loaded, preparing for a fight.

"What's the plan? We have one, right?" Neptune asked skeptically, aiming the sights of his gun at the winged beasts above him, leading Ruby to turn to his team leader.

"Sun, scroll!"

The monkey faunus shot a grin her way as he flicked his handheld device at the hooded girl, using his tail to throw it into her hands. Ruby smiled back and entered in a series of numbers, cueing the noise of a jet engine as Ruby's own rocket-powered locker crashed into the stadium floor, opening with a hiss to reveal her beloved Crescent Rose.

Grinning, Ruby ran up to the locker to retrieve her weapon, only for a black shape to crash on top of it. A Griffon unfurled its black wings and revealed its bony visage, roaring in the young girl's face as she covered her face with her arm.

Before the Grimm could pounce down on her, a gunshot rang through the air as a bullet dug into the Griffon's neck, causing it to growl in pain and take to the skies. Turning around to meet the gaze of her savior, Ruby's eyes met the smoking barrel of Professor Port's firearm, with Professor Oobleck standing beside him grasping his club in both hands.

"Students, I think it would be best for you to leave." The aging professor said, reloading his blunderbuss as the Griffons above the arena grew more agitated.

Unwilling to back down, Ruby rebutted, "But we can fight-"

"Ms. Rose!" Oobleck stopped her, his eyes holding an authoritative air, compelling her to stop and listen.

"This day will surely be remembered in Remnant's history, for better or for worse. I'd prefer it if my students could live to tell about it." The green-haired huntsman stated with a kind smile on his face, leading his coworker to nod in jovial agreement.

Nodding her head, Ruby turned to retrieve her weapon from her locker, unfurling Crescent Rose into its scythe form, beckoning to her fellow combat students.

"Let's go!"

The crowd of huntsmen and huntresses-in-training all then began to move in unison towards the arena exit, on the side of the ring. As Reese zoomed past on her hoverboard, Ruby felt a flash of light enter her eyes. Turning to Velvet fumbling with her camera in both hands, she caught a glimpse of her satisfied grin when she looked over her device, until Coco beckoned for her to catch up with her.

"Ruby! Let's get out of here!" Ezio called out to his friend, causing the red-hooded girl to turn her head to him, kicking up her legs and running towards the exit, leaving her professors to tend to the swarm of Grimm circling above them.

"One final match, Barty! Place your bets!" Port laughed alongside his colleague, aiming their weapons above ready to put up a fight against the angry Griffons.

Docking Bay, Amity Coliseum

As Connor ran to the exit, he could hear the frantic screaming all around him filling his ears.

By the time he and his fellow combat students had reached the tunnels, they were completely crammed with panicking civilians, all flocking to the end of the path, leading him and a few other students to push a few people aside, as well as a few people bumping into him in the panic.

As he ran to the exit, Connor couldn't help but feel his mind wander to Blake, who was down at the Festival grounds. He was sure she would be fighting her way through the Grimm now, and he could only trust her to make it out safely.

Reaching the end of the tunnel, the crowd reached the huge docking bay, where Airbuses lined up along the edge as armed soldiers attempted to usher the endless lines of civilians onto the buses, but with the narrow ramps where buses would dock, it would take too long to get everyone to safety.

A huge crowd of civilians waited on the docking bay, as the group of combat students gathered near the edge, waiting for a ship for them to arrive, allowing them to descend to ground level and escape the Coliseum. However, the roaring of jet engines brought their attention to the skies.

Multiple Bullheads appeared in the air as they all moved in formation and lined the edges of the docking bay. Connor stared curiously at the foreign collection of ships, looking to his comrades only to feel a chill of dread shoot up his spine, filling him with anxiety as he looked to his fellow Assassins to find the same expression written on their faces. Taking a closer look at the cockpit, Connor's eyes widened and his face paled when he saw it.

In the pilot's seat was a hooded man wearing a white mask over his eyes. A White Fang member.

Suddenly, the Bullheads' doors opened to release groups of varying Grimm onto the docking bay, sending the crowds of civilians into instant panic as they backed away from the ledge from the snarling beasts.

Almost instantly, the Grimm began to charge the crowd, only to be met with a barrage of gunfire from the Atlesian robots and soldiers, felling some Grimm with their firearms. Nodding to his fellow combat students, Connor and the others joined in the fray, himself leaping at a large Beowolf with his tomahawk ready to swing down on its skull.

As he yanked his weapon from the disintegrating corpse of the Grimm, he punched a finger to his earpiece as he used its pistol form to blow a dust bullet into an Ursa.

"Edward, the White Fang is here! They are releasing Grimm on the docking bay! We need you here now!" He yelled into his comms, desperately fending off the horde as the crowd behind them screamed in terror.

"I'll be there! Just keep them occupied until I make it!" Edward managed to reply before the connection cut off. Connor then growled as he flicked out his pivot blade, leaping into battle with the others.

The soldiers all advanced as the horde was pushed back to the edge of the docking bay, the robots leading the charge as Grimm after Grimm fell to their onslaught. General Ironwood looked over the battle with a stoic silence, ensuring none of the Grimm neared the civilians.

Suddenly, a stray Bullhead neared the Coliseum, leading Ironwood to turn towards the newly approaching vehicle. He had no doubt it had arrived to deliver more Grimm to the platform, and was proven right once he heard a loud roar sound off from inside the ship. The loud clang of metal was heard, before a clawed hand burst through the door and tore it clean off, revealing a massive Alpha Beowolf.

The huge canine Grimm leapt from the wrecked Bullhead as it tumbled down to the ground below and landed on all fours on the docking bay, where it locked eyes with the robots now aiming at its faceplate. Snarling between its fangs, the huge Grimm charged, pouncing on two Knights, tearing them apart with its razor-sharp claws and fangs.

Grabbing a Knight uselessly attempting to shoot at its thick hide, the Beowolf held its body with both paws in a vice grip before tearing the robot apart. As it was about to charge the human soldiers, the creature locked eyes with the General, whose eyes narrowed in determination as the combat students stood in formation to fight the Grimm, only for the General to hold out a hand, signaling them to back away.

The Grimm recognized the General's intensity, and met it with its own bloodlust, dropping on all fours and charging the General who had broken into a sprint towards the monstrous wolf. Yelling out a battle cry, the General saw the Alpha attempt to pounce on him with a leap, leading him to slide under it as he revealed a beautifully engraved revolver from his coat.

Firing the hand cannon twice above him, two bullets dug into the Grimm's belly as it landed on its claws, screeching its momentum to a halt as it spun to meet the General's gaze. Ironwood did the same, spinning to face his enemy as he dug his hand into the floor, trailing rubble as it dug into the ground.

Roaring, the Alpha ran up to the General, who met the charge with multiple bullets, grazing its hide, but not slowing it down. Swinging its claws at the General, it hit only air as Ironwood ducked in response, spinning his body back upright, raising an arm just as the giant Beowolf swung its other paw at him, stopping its appendage firmly in place. Much to the shock of those watching, the General didn't flinch at all on impact.

Using his opening, Ironwood aimed his pistol at the ground and fired off an explosive round, blowing the Grimm's feet off the floor as it rose into the air, leading Ironwood to tighten his grip on the Alpha's arm, swinging the massive wolf around and slamming it against the ground, dazing the huge beast. Slinging its arm over his shoulder, the Alpha's body was now leaning atop of Ironwood's shoulders, its arm stretching over them as its head hang limp over Ironwood's.

Aiming his pistol at its vulnerable neck, Ironwood shot off a round at point blank, sending the bullet through its throat, landing a fatal blow as the Alpha finally fell dead.

Turning his head to the noise of more jet engines, Ironwood felt his face drain of color once more Bullheads appeared. He could hardly keep up, neither would his soldiers or the combat students at this rate. However, as if answering his prayers, the horn of an airship sounded off, along with the resounding noise of cannon fire.

The Bullheads could not evade the sudden attack, tearing them asunder as they plummeted to the ground far below. At the captain's helm was none other than Edward Kenway, yelling orders to Team JAAE who manned the deck, attacking the approaching Bullheads with their own weapons.

"Good work! Just in the nick of time, too! Lower the sails and prepare to dock!" Edward barked out as the last of the Bullheads disappeared from the sky, ensuring no more Grimm would arrive.

Breathing out a sigh of relief, Ironwood noticed the rest of the combat students finishing off the remainder of Grimm on the docking bay as they all gathered in front of him, standing at attention. Although he was a military commander, he was also a headmaster of one of the academies, meaning he also had a responsibility for the students.

"What's going on?!" Ruby asked him, leading Ironwood to sigh.

"Grimm have breached the city and are running rampant. The White Fang has suddenly reappeared to launch an attack on Beacon, and to make matters worse some… vagabond has stolen one of my ships. Until we regain command, the skies are out of our control." Ironwood explained.

"So I'm…" Ironwood began, before his eyes suddenly narrowed as he drew his weapon and fired, striking down a charging Creep with a bullet between its eyes.

"…going to take it back." Ironwood finished as he prepared to board his ship, only to be stopped by Jaune.

"What should we do?" The blonde knight asked, leading Ironwood to turn towards the combat students once more.

"You have two choices: Defend your kingdom and your school… or save yourselves." Ironwood declared, prompting the students to turn to one another, as Ironwood sighed.

"No one will fault you if you leave." He said solemnly with a downcast gaze, before entering his ship and taking to the skies, leaving the students alone.

Sun was the first to break the silence as he brought out his weapon. "I mean, come on! What else are we gonna do?"

The others nodded in agreement as Edward and his Assassin allies arrived to join the fray. "Climb aboard. The Jackdaw'll take you down. I can drop you at Beacon, but I could use some extra hands on deck tonight."

The group turned to each other in perplexed silence, before Scarlet raised his hand.

"If you want a crew, you got one. We're all in this together." The red-haired pirate smirked as other students vocally agreed, including Ruby, Jaune, and Sun.

The group all nodded in agreement as they dashed to the Jackdaw, climbing aboard as they spread out across the deck of the ship, ready to fight while others descended below deck to the hold.

Edward then saw Ezio, Connor, and Altaïr approach him, leaving the members of Team ACEE reunited once again, the four of them facing one another with distress lining each of their expressions.

"So… that's it? Did we fail the mission?" Connor asked.

"Emerald and Mercury are still out there, and we failed to stop their plan. Whatever happens next, nothing will be the same from now on." Altaïr said through clenched teeth, balling his hands into fists, getting used to that alien feeling of his missing finger, a memento of his failure.

"But that doesn't mean we're done, does it, fratellos?" Ezio replied, causing the three of them to turn to their brother.

"They may have slipped from our grasp but the least we can do now is fight to save those we can! Now, we fight to defend this place with our lives!" Ezio declared with passion, causing the Assassins to nod in agreement.

"We'll get those bastards another time, but now the Jackdaw needs your hands. Let's set sail!" Edward declared as Team ACEE boarded the airship, Edward taking his place at the helm.

"Disengage docking! Full sail! Boosters go! Let's send those Grimm down to hell, lads!" Edward yelled out orders as the Jackdaw set sail for the Grimm-infested grounds of Beacon Academy.

Vytal Festival, Beacon Academy

Blake couldn't calm down, not as her feline ears filled with the screams of terrified people and the growling of rampaging Grimm. She wanted to cover her ears to drown out the noise, pinch herself and pray to whatever deity that this was all some horrible dream, that she would wake up to find herself asleep in bed waking up to yet another happy day.

This nightmare was all too real, however. Her teammate wasn't looking much calmer as her distraught face betrayed her fragile composure not unlike Blake's own. They had witnessed the horrible outcome of the Tournament match and now all of a sudden the massive hordes barreled into the city, flooding into the school grounds.

"I don't believe this… Penny…" Weiss whimpered in disbelief as Blake heard her Scroll's connection come through with a beep.

"Yang, are you okay?" She asked through the device in hopes of a reply. Without a doubt, Yang had already left their dorm in order to help, solitary confinement be damned.

"I'm fine! Is Ruby okay? She isn't answering her scroll." She asked frantically. Even though Altaïr and his friends assured her they would keep Ruby out of harm's way during their mission, she couldn't help but worry about her sister's lack of a response.

"I'm… not sure. The Coliseum should have top-notch security but things aren't looking very good down here, either." Blake regretfully admitted.

"Yang… I'm sure she's fine. She's our leader, she can take care of herself." Weiss added over the scroll, bringing Yang's panic to ease. She wouldn't let anything happen to her, not in a million years, but despite this she trusted her to hold her own, and she trusted Altaïr to make good on his word.

"Right. I'm headed to the docking bay near the courtyard. The White Fang are releasing Grimm into the school!" Yang replied, leading Blake's eyes to widen intensely.

"The White Fang is here?!" She exclaimed in shock, only for Yang's end to be filled with growling of what she could only assume to be Grimm.

"Agh! Got to go! Stay safe, guys!" Yang hurriedly said before the connection cut, leaving Blake in stunned silence. They had fell for the Fang's plots once again. It was foolish to even think that they were completely gone after the Breach, they were only biding their time to strike back.

"Blake?... BLAKE!"

Blake snapped out of her daze when she felt Weiss's hands shaking her shoulder.

"What's the plan?" The heiress asked her in a distressed voice, to which Blake replied by narrowing her gaze and focusing, shifting her Scroll and entering a code.

"We're going to the docks, and we're doing our job." Blake declared, just as two rocket-powered lockers crashed into the dirt in front of them, opening to reveal Gambol Shroud and Myrtenaster, respectively.

The two girls were aware their lives were at stake, that this night would change everything as they knew it forever. As they grasped their weapons, they understood just what they were fighting for tonight. Turning to each other, both girls nodded as their distress faded into determination.

"Shall we?" Weiss asked with a light smirk as she raised her rapier.

Blake slung Gambol Shroud over her back, turning to her teammate with a determined grin. "Let's."
