After listening to romantic songs for inspiration, I listened to a tune that reminded me of how long it had been since I published a tear-jerking one-shot. I actually wept a little while writing this. Regardless if you do too, I hope you enjoy reading it.

Song of Inspiration: "Wherever You Will Go" cover by Charlene Soraia

May tucked a strand of hair behind her boyfriend's ear. Drew, her lovable partner, shot her an appreciative grin before taking a chug of his soda. The couple was watching another movie to pass the night. Because it was Drew's turn to choose the film, they were watching a romantic one. May was the one that preferred action movies over "chick-flicks".

But tonight, the brunette had a sentimental thought. It might have been the bittersweet ending of their movie. It might have been her sudden awareness of his fingers interlaced with hers—she didn't know. There just had to be something Drew had to know, something she would tell him right now.

"Drew?"

Drew set his can to the side. When he saw how somber May's expression was, he reflexively strengthened his hold of her. "What is it?"

"What would you do if, one day, I'm no longer with you?" his girlfriend asked.

Drew's eyes widened. He then practically crushed her fingers in what was now a desperate grip.

"Why would you ask that?" he rasped.

"Nothing," May assured, gently tugging her hand out of his. "I'm just...curious. What if I died, and you continued to live?"

Drew bit the skin behind his lip and scowled. "That's not funny, May."

"I'm serious," May reconnected their hands. "You can ask me the same thing too, you know."

"Don't worry about it," Drew grunted, turning away to face the credits of their feature. "I'm hungry. Let's order pizza."

May sighed through her nose as Drew reached for his phone. Their hands were still together, she noticed. Touched, she embraced his arm and leaned on his shoulder.

"I hope that day never comes either," she told him. Then, after a thought, added, "I'd be with you forever if I could."

She felt him tense under her cheek. His smartphone laid untouched as he continued to sit still. Then, after what seemed like hours, May felt his temple on her forehead.

"Then don't leave," Drew whispered.

May grinned and snuggled closer to him. The pizza was forgotten. They instead held each other in the quiet of the night.

On the mattress of May's hospital bed.
