Chapter Six: The Way Back.

Fred was distracted by the sudden shock that had flooded Sirius' face.

"What is it?" He gasped "what's wrong?"

"It doesn't-", Sirius stumbled over his words "it doesn't make sense."

Fred glanced down at his hands and saw the gold mist wrapping around them, clinging to his skin like melting cobwebs. He stretched his hands out before him and flexed the fingers, watching the mist move with them. His eyes flitted back to Sirius nervously and he could see the panic in the young man's face.

"Is this it?" His voice faltered, "Am I- Am I moving on?"

"No, no I don't think so" Sirius spoke fast has he moved forward to Fred, reluctant to touch the gold mist that was rapidly growing and becoming heavier, clouding Fred's vision. "I think you're- Fred, my boy, I think you are going back"

Fred's heart seemed to leap from his chest. Back, how could he go back? He had died, how could he go back?

The mist was growing thicker and thicker by the second and when he looked down towards his fingers he was shocked to find them completely coated in a sparkling, viscous gold liquid that dripped from him. As he watched the dripping liquid he saw that instead of falling to a puddle on the floor it seemed to flow towards where he could see Hermione bent over his cold face and it pooled around his chest, seeping through his clothes and into his skin.

He glanced back at Sirius and saw that the look of panic on his face had vanished to be replaced with an expression of slack jawed wonder that cracked into a smile when their eyes met.

"I guess we're not quite ready for you yet, boy." He laughed and stepped back, tilting his head to Fred as if tipping his hat. "Good luck with it all, I guess. I hope I don't see you again for a long while."

Laughing again, Sirius turned and walked away. As Fred watched, the man fell to all fours and took his animagus form before scampering away.

The pool of gold around Fred's body had grown very large and he moved closer, kneeing beside Hermione. He could feel the space around him growing darker as the golden liquid moved up his neck and face, mist swarming his vision. He turned towards where he saw the shape of her, still bent over him. He reached out to touch her once more but before he could make contact all went dark.

A bitter cold swept across his body, accompanied by sharp pains that made him want to scream out loud. His eyes snapped open and the sudden brightness would have overcome him, had he not been shielded from most of it by the beautiful bushy haired angel leaning over him.

He blinked up at her and in a second, before any of his family could even begin to react, he had pulled her towards him, closing the gap between her lips and his own.

Fin.

A.N.How you treat this story is up to you, obviously I stand by the original ending because I clearly enjoy hurting myself but the romantics amongst you are free to use this as the end. You might also enjoy my new (happier) fic That Weasley's Girl so go check that out!
