When she wakes up Saturday morning she rolls over, and her alarm clock tells her that it is half past seven. The boys are usually up earlier than that, even on Saturday. She sneaks out of her room, and finds that all of their beds are empty. She heads down the stairs, and finds all of the inhabitants of her house gathered around her table.
"Good morning, glory. We were wondering when you were going to join us."
"Matt, what are you doing here?"
"He fell asleep on the couch watching Ninja Turtles with us last night," Max reminds her.
"Why are you in the kitchen, now? It is early."
"These rascals woke me up with their growling stomachs."
"Mostly it was me," Stephanie admits, "when I dropped the skillet on the floor this morning, when I was attempting to make food, without little rascals."
"It didn't work," Max reveals.
"So, I made breakfast. French toast, and bacon. We saved you some," he adds, as he puts a plate on the counter, in front of her. He draws a smiley face on her French toast with whipped cream.
"You didn't have do all of this."
"I wanted to," he admits, smiling wildly.
"Thank you."
"Is it okay if Matt takes us to the movies this afternoon, mom?"
"That is up to Matt."
"He already said yes," Max updates her.
"I'm fine with it," she agrees.
That evening her sons are all tucked in bed. She sits outside, under the stars, with Matt.
"Thank you for taking them to the movies today, and for breakfast."
"Anytime. I enjoy hanging out with them."
"Can I ask you something?"
"Yeah," he nods.
"Why didn't you settle down, and have kids, when you were younger?"
"I loved being a bachelor. I didn't even know that I liked kids. By the way, I really like your kids."
"I think the feeling is mutual. You will make a good dad, someday."
"DJ, there is something I need to tell you."
"Okay."
"I ran into Steve at that doughnut place yesterday. I know we agreed that we wouldn't go there, out of solidarity, but I love their pastries. I can't help myself. Those jelly doughnuts are out of this world. Clearly, I'm an addict."
"It's okay. I snuck over there during lunch a few weeks ago. I ate a glazed doughnut for lunch. By the way, these babies love doughnuts," she points at her rounded abdomen.
"While I was waiting he started talking. Before I left he totally broke down."
"What are you talking about?"
"He is completely miserable. He and CJ are constantly arguing, and he is questioning why he even married her."
"He asked her to marry him," she summarizes, "I don't know why he is staying married, if he is so miserable."
"Because he is a total idiot, apparently."
"I agree, but what specifically are you talking about?"
"Apparently, a few weeks ago, when he was getting ready to throw in the towel, and walk away she told him that she was pregnant."
"Oh, mylanta!"
"He said he had left her doctor's appointment, and that she is eight weeks along."
"He left me cash in an envelope in my mailbox, with a note that said he's sorry."
"What a jerk," he hugs her.
"You're not a jerk. I still don't understand why you are here. I know that you enjoy spending time with the boys, but I was awful to you. I am so sorry that I treated you the way that I did."
"I forgive you."
"Why would you forgive me? I don't deserve it."
"Because," he takes a deep breath, "I am still in love with you."
"Oh, Mylanta!"
"Before you freak out I don't expect you to say it back. These past few months have been tough for you."
"You are an amazing human being."
"The other day when I came over here there was something that I wanted to tell you."
"What's that?"
"I dreamt that the twins were here, and you had a name picked out for one of them, but I didn't know what it was. You wouldn't tell me. I looked right at her and I guessed her name on the first try."
"Really?! What was it?"
"Do you have a name already picked out?"
"I have one I have been thinking about."
He grins, "Emmelyn."
She smiles widely, "Shut the front door!"
"Is that it?"
"Yes. How could you possibly know? I haven't told anyone. I didn't even write it in my journal."
"I told you I dreamt it."
"That is so crazy," she grins.
"Ever since then I have been thinking about what you should name the other baby. I don't know why. It is your baby. It isn't as if I have any say in this. I just feel so invested."
"You aren't just going to leave me hanging like that, are you?"
"What do you mean?"
"What did you come up with?"
"Everley."
"Aw! That is adorable."
"I was so on the fence about it, because I was afraid you would think it was too much. You know two E names, I wasn't really sure how you felt about their names starting with the same letter. It's a shot in the dark really. Like I said, I just feel so invested."
"I love it," she grins.
